  • Harrier is difficult to fly yes but just goes to show it's all about training, us brits flew it in the Falklands from carriers in terrible weather & it never let us down, a british plane designed to be flown by british pilots...nuff said :)

  • My dad used to fly one of these and its almost made me fatherless many times. I wouldn't say I went to a lot of funerals but I have been to a few. he loved flying it but he would always make a very deliberate good by and I love you before he went flying.

  • The lift fan of F-35 is only does one job, lift the aircraft until it up to fly speed, while Harrier's thrust vector nozzles are do 2 jobs, when nozzles fold back to gain speed, if nose loose lift for any reason like wind gust then no way to recover, must eject. The video said it all, very dangerous to fly.

  • F-35 cost is much higher than Harrier but way much better than Harrier in every way. This video is clear enough and there are no reasons to maintain Harrier in service.

  • The other issue - the Harrier's vulnerability to ground file is due to the fact that its construction is extremely lightweight and lacks armour protection to vital areas. This is to do with the fact that it needs to be built very light for vertical take off. This is a necessary compromise for VTOL capability. Pluses are the Harrier's immunity to attacks on airfields, and their very quick response to close air support requests due to the fact that they can be based close to the action.

  • This video looks like it incorporates a lot of clips from PR videos make on behalf of its competitors. The accident rate wan't a problem with the plane so much as with US training. In British use the Harrier's accident rate was similar to other aircraft. The issue with all VTOL jets is that if the nose isn't pointing exactly towards the airflow, which changes the direction of air sucked into the engine intakes, it will flip over and slam into the ground. The accident rate dropped with training

eehhh check the vid harrier is 100%

  • the Harrier is a cute jet but unfortunately it sux :/

  • British Harrier? British Petroleum?

  • @undertake782 It isn't called British Petroleum anymore, it changed its name to BP over a decade ago due to the fact that it is now a multinationally owned company and not owned by Britain, stop blaming us because you heard it's our fault from ur biased and ignorant news programs xD

  • dumb video, and lots of dumb comments

  • @TreetopFlyer84 why is this a dumb video? and can harriers take off verticaly unlike the f22 raptor?

  • thats av-8a not 8b 8a is the early model

  • i was assigned to Cherry Point NC in 1980 after returning to the U.S. from Okinawa japan, i noticed, what appeared was an accident around one "hanger" , i asked what happened, a Marine replied, darn Harrier pilot tried to get land next to the hanger, he got spun upside down , he flew upside down completely thru the hanger, then crashed into about twenty cars in the parking lot

  • To compare the Harrier to the A-10 is very unfair as they're very different types, and the A-10 was built from the outset to take massive punishment and still get home. F-35 will be way ahead in technologies, but it's interesting to note that the same issue of thrust Vs combat weight has proved a real headache. The Harrier has always been difficult to fly, which is why on the top grade of pilots from the training schools are trained to fly it. JSF should be much easier to handle.

  • That's cos it's a British plane.

You Americans shouldn't be pissing around with it.

  • @andyfozzy yep the british aircraft and when the us trys to fly it it goes down fast

  • @andyfozzy

The AV8-A was a British plane. The AV8-B is an American plane, with a minor British role role apart from the engine. AV8-B looks similar to the AV8-A but is a completely new plane with double the range and payload. It looks similar because any plane built around the unique Rolls Royce Pegasus engine will look similar.

  • Five HUNDRED hours to do an engine swap? This thing is such a notorious shitbox. I knew it was bad but I didn't know it was this bad.

  • @xilix

The F22 is 100 times as bad from reports. It has hardly any serviceability at all.

  • Harrier is the fist ADAC / STOL jet

used in many army, it isn't a easy jet. F35 is the next génération, in the hands of Test pilot

no problem, perhaps more when pilot army use this new machine in opération ...

especialy in ADAC / STOL the more dangerous moment for the pilot

  • The F-35C(navy version) is suppose to be superior to the F-18. I will make it more simple. The F-35C is superior to the F-18E/F Superhornet. The F-35C has the stealth advantage and overall better situational awareness. Our navy has traditionally been a two engine fighter jet navy. If they totally get rid of the F-18 it will be due to budget saving cuts. The navy could still use the F-18 in a support role.

  • @skyvilla The HELL-35C Shitning II is going to replace the F/A-18A/B/C/D Hornets.

But i read that they will use the old Hornets for some testing purpose, and they'll propaly rename it to F/Q-18...

  • The F-35 will be a major replacement well worth the money.

  • @skyvilla F35 will be great to replace harrier but is it that good to replace super hornet in the USN ? on strike abilities maybe yes but on air to air nothing sure

  • @XavierB0126

Because it is more complicated, the VTOL version of the F35 is likely to be less reliable and more costly to maintain than the Harrier. The payload-range capability of the VTOL version is also likely to be poorer than the Harrier, because it is supersonic and therefore has to be more robustly built, hence heavier, to handle transonic buffeting. The range-payload capability of the AV8-B matches that of the A7 Corsair attack, which is excellent and better than the FA18A Hornet.
