Check out WITH THESE EYES for answer to the question: What would it mean to the leaders of industry if mankind were suddenly presented with nature’s gift of a sustainable green energy source?
Thank God for Michael Crawford. I don't think the show would have succeeded without the way he originated the character. And to think it could have been Steve...*shudder*
ahh so that's the guy who was in that old phantom music video with sarah. Now all the pieces come together. I always wondered why the lyrics to that video were different from the one now.
Is there a small chance we could listen to the full version of Steve Harley's 'Music of the Night' some day? Although I don't really like him singing the title song (single version), I must admit that I find the snippet of MOTN rather interesting. Of course, it seems to be quite a different approach to the song. And normally, I also prefer a rather classically trained voice singing this song (Ethan Freeman, Scott Davies). But for some reason, I think Mr Harley's voice sounds appealing here.
@MrElfantasma Thanks for the positive comment sir. Having seen Harley on stage something like 10 times between 1976 and 2009, I have to say he does not deserve any of the malign comments some of these guys are making. I'm not saying anyone has to like him, but he would not have ruined the show, and there are many songs and performances in his repertoire that prove this. If I ever get my hands on the full song, I'm told it's out there, I'll come back and share it with you.
Does anyone know where I could find a recording of Steve Harley singing this particular version of Music of the Night? Was it ever released in any form? I just searched YouTube, out of curiosity's sake, and came up with nothing.
I'm a huge Phantom and Les Mis fan. But I have to say I know this is off topic. Colm, Rebecca and Patti are great actors, yet that's not enough for critics to say that is a GLUM show? Seriously people those days... I hope they (Rebecca, Patti and Colm) had a last laugh!
Don't want to see the characters and their story butchered for future generations?
Then be appalled to know that in Lloyd Webber's unwelcome sequel, entitled LOVE NEVER DIES, which is based on a flop novella by Frederick Forsyth, the Phantom no longer composes opera but trashy vaudeville while not being a bartender, Christine sleeps around, Meg becomes a topless dancer who murders Christine and Raoul becomes an alcoholic and wife abuser.
I can't believe they thought about firing Hal Prince! If anything, this documentary shows how integral Prince was to PotO's success. I question Andrew Lloyd Webber's theatrical instincts.
He really started it up. Im afraid of what would have happened if Steve got the part. Im sure his singing and acting would have turned people off. That was just not his kidn of role. Pantom Of The Opera is my obssesion..lol;)
i didn't like him either, he slides to much when he sings and turns it into too much of a pop song. Michael crawford....mmmm...that's where it's at XD
I know that some people don't like certain actors playing the Phantom because of their voice and interpretation... But I think it can be all agreed upon that nobody can imagine Steve Harley in the role of the Phantom.
I'm glad they decided to stay with Hal Prince, but it's crazy that they fired the other director because Les Mis opened to poor reviews. It went on to be one of West End's best shows!
But then again so did Phantom. So I guess it all works out of the best =)
And Micheal Crawford > Steve Harley x1000. It's just not the right type of music for his voice at all. Thank God they found Micheal Crawford in time!
Steve Harley was all wrong for the phantom-just awful! I just cringe when I hear him sing. The amazing thing is he didn't realize it-not even after he heard Michael's performance. He just didn't get how bad he was for the part. It' s hilarious!
Agreed, I'm REALLY glad he didn't get it, and there's a bit in this documentary when Steve Harley says he saw opening night and his wife said, ''You are better than him!''. She's incorrect, STEVE SUCKS and MICHAEL RULES!!!
I agree, I know about it and its really tacky and over the top and I'm glad they didn't choose Steve Harley because when I heard him singing MOTN at 5:25-5:46 he just ruins it. Please don't yell at me for this, its just my opinion!
Thanks for posting this. The UK DVD has a documentary called "Behind the Mask" and has some of this material, but its totally different. I much prefer this one, has some interesting stuff in it!

Harley's version sounded really goofy. As if he was trying to be all trippy.

The steve harley version is good as a pop song but not acceptable for the stage show... so glad Michael Crawford got the part.

And every other time he opens his mouth to sing the Phantom's part.

Steve Harley has an okay voice, but I don't think he'd be right for the Phantom. He has more of rock voice (kind of like Gerard Butler).
moonclangirl95 2 years ago 7
The rock voice distorts rhythm and lacks the richness of someone's who more classically trained.
I agree completely with others when Michael Crawford was the best pick.
