OK, so finally I was able to figure it out!! Well, not really, but I don't know how I managed to do that last part XD It looks really beautiful =) I'm off to fold another one ^^
I'm so stuck at minute 20:00!! T_T This is so frustrating!! XO This one is even more difficult to fold than the hydrangea. But I still like the hydrangea better, though both tessellations look really cool =)
@MrEllinas21 What do you mean by vary? If you want more stages, please check happyfolding(dot)com and search for "clover folding". In the page to the 7-stage tessellations there's some advice on how to proceed.
thx u helped so much im getting good at this also i tryed making this with tissue foil and it turned out awesome the only thing is is it`s really flatend once u finish it with the tissue foil but since i made it huge i could puff it out and it looked 3d and i rounded all the edges on the outside layer. but one question im really stuck on figuring out how to make it with more layers so i was hoping u could make a vid on how to do it with more lavers and put your version of it with tissue foil in
I can't see anything you do from 19:58 to 20:10 please explain closer so I can SEE it because the squares are so small you don't know which one you are talking about or folding, and when making the 16x16 grid that way they are not equal which i found surprising coming from you who usually likes everything to be very precise
@kindercollecter2 I'm just explaining in that step. Continue watching and check where I add creases if that's better to see. I basically always fold my blintz grids like that and get great precision with it. I guess it's about practice, not the technique itself.
Our Family has been doing Origami our whole life since we were little girls. I found your tutorial on this tessellation and I am so stoked! I have rekindled my love for folding!
after learning the other day to make a grid (thanks to you), today I made my first tessellation.... yeap I have a nice clover folding ^_^ which I could no way have made without your tutorial. I hope you don't mind me calling you my origami teacher.
btw I switched to craft paper from glossy and simple office paper and it made my life easier... could you please write in your site or make a tutorial about paper selection according to category of models? things like what we should look for etc.
@trrngrl01 Good to hear this! Re paper selection: I've been thinking about and drafting a new section for my site that will concentrate on where to buy paper. I also wanted to link to pictures of models that I folded from that paper (and link from those image pages back to the paper description/sources page). Does this match with what you're looking for? I haven't completed my draft yet, and it will need some time to put this into place. Unfortunately, time is scarce right now. :(
@AdamsSara the section you are describing would be very helpful, though that was not what I had in mind. Let me try and explain lol (english is not my first language either so I will try to be more to the point). I am actually talking about a general guideline of the characteristics the paper should have according to the kind of origami folded, i.e the weight of the paper. I just found that I can make nice tessellations from a somewhat heavier paper than 80g but it is not as good for cranes
@trrngrl01 Well, paper weight is not the only aspect. It's about the crispness of the paper, whether it breaks easily, how thick it is (rather than heavy), stuff like that. I think it's actually better to say "this paper works" and make some remarks on which properties it has. I fear just paper weight would be misleading. -- As to tessellations from heavier paper: I have folded some from elephant hide (110 gsm), and this leads to really nice results.
@AdamsSara Thanks now I got the idea! It would be very helpful if you did a reference to the properties of the paper that would work as you say. I was thinking wrongly about paper weight because that is all I find in sites that sell paper. You see its less than a month that I am folding and still trying to figure things out. So for the time being I will go on learning to fold from the craft paper I have, in anticipation of the new section in your site. Thank you for sharing all that knowledge :)
YES! i finished it! except, its uneven and block-like, but thats okay! next time, its going to turn out better. thank u for the video-without it, the diagrams would have confused me to no end!
Okay. so i finally finished it after like 2 hours. Haha i do not advise beginners to try this. I just started doing origami yesterday, and then i though "oh hey i could do this" Haha i finished it though. this is the hardest one i've ever done....
@AdamsSara Lol. Thanks. i was surprised with myself. I almost quit about halfway through but i decided it would be better just to keep doing it, because thats the only way i'm going to get better at it.
@TheOrigamiO I usually find it hard to answer if now question is asked. Else I'd be posting lots of comments just saying "Hi", which isn't *that* interesting. ;)
I used a 19.5cm square of pergamyn for the 7-level clover folding shown in the "Origami Tessellations" video. So the grid creases are about 5mm apart.
I think you need to start with ... 40 divisions, rather than 16 in the beginning. Other than that, you just have to repeat the steps over and over. The 4th stage is only slightly different to the 3rd stage (as shown in this video), and from there on the steps really are all the same. Note though, that every extra stage you add takes about as much time as all the stages put together before. So a model with 4 stages takes twice as long as one as 3 stages, and 7 stages takes about 16 times as long.
It's conceptually the same. I'll think about maybe showing the slight differences for the further stages. Mostly, though, it's just a patience exercise. Each new stage takes about as much time as all the ones before taken together.
If you use the same size paper, then, yes, everything you fold will be smaller. Alternatively you can use larger paper. The rule is that you need to start with a square grid with 6 * (no of stages) - 2 divisions. Then start from the centre and proceed as in the video.
yay! I was able to do it on my first try! (that is pretty rare for me!) I think being able to do the hydrangeas in my sleep helped a lot with this one lol
thank you Sara for those instructions. All of your videos are really clear ,and it's a great pleasure to recreate nice origami for a beginner as me.(sorry for my bad english)

(or Ronald Koh's King Cobra?... he personally sent me his diagrams for that model... I think he probably could give you permission to make a video on the model if you ask him. n_n)
Well, I can't give you more info than YouTube already provides... just go on youtube(dot)com/partners
Back when I applied for partnership, I first read through the requirements and terms & conditions, and found that I both met the requirements and was ok with the terms & conditions. I'd just surpassed the 1000 subscribers back then and I told them I'd upload videos about once a month, had permission, etc. They accepted my application and that's about it.
Actually, it's not. The models are similar, but definitely not the same. In the hydrangea tessellation, you fold from the outermost stage to the smaller, inner ones. In this one all stages are the same size (although the number of squares increases), and you start in the center.
hi i folded the paper into 32's and im stuck on one part when your do the fold at 17:15 a second time there is a middle flap and i don't know how to fold that down can you make a video or respond on how to fold it?
I'll see if I find the time to show how to do more than 3 stages. It's indeed only the step at 17:15 that has to be explained to generalise to as many levels as you like.
Identify the square to flatten. The diagonals will be valley folds, and the horizontal will be a mountain fold. Collapse by pushing in the horizontal crease on each side, thus automatically folding the diagonals in a valley fold. Push the mountain fold that indicates the bottom of the square to lie on the top of the square. I'm not sure these words help, they try to explain what can be seen at 17:15. It might help watching the sequence a couple of times.
If you want to fold n levels, then you have to start with a (6*n - 2) grid. You can fold 5 levels from a 28 grid, or 6 from a 34 grid. If you want to start with a 32 grid, you can either cut off 4/32 on each side, or live with having a slightly different finish of the model. Hope this helps.
Well, I thought you might have known the model before. 13 hours doesn't sound too bad. Did you take a picture? It'd be interesting to see that. I think the biggest I've seen so far was 11 stages. How did you fare with folding a 100x100 grid?
Yes, I decided to try uploading a video > 10 minutes, and it actually works. I read that partners could recently, and it seems that's true. That means my future videos won't have to be split into parts anymore. Exciting!
AdamSara, it sure took you long for the drawing creases

I don't understand the waterbomb/open sink at 17:15. The part I don't understand is how to flatten it... Any suggestions?

Identify the square to flatten. The diagonals will be valley folds, and the horizontal will be a mountain fold. Collapse by pushing in the horizontal crease on each side, thus automatically folding the diagonals in a valley fold. Push the mountain fold that indicates the bottom of the square to lie on the top of the square. I'm not sure these words help, they try to explain what can be seen at 17:15. It might help watching the sequence a couple of times.

Sorry I meant paper and not paer

If I divide the paperin 32 parts how many levels will it have?
If I want to make 6 or > levels, how many parts will I have to divide the paer?
gustavoiha 2 years ago
If you want to fold n levels, then you have to start with a (6*n - 2) grid. You can fold 5 levels from a 28 grid, or 6 from a 34 grid. If you want to start with a 32 grid, you can either cut off 4/32 on each side, or live with having a slightly different finish of the model. Hope this helps.

But would the proportion still be the same?

Well, I thought you might have known the model before. 13 hours doesn't sound too bad. Did you take a picture? It'd be interesting to see that. I think the biggest I've seen so far was 11 stages. How did you fare with folding a 100x100 grid?

Why am I finding it hard to believe that? What size paper did you use?

Yeah, just finished one with 5 steps^^

justagirl5800 2 years ago 2
not quite but it looks similiar to it
sephiroth87932 2 years ago
It's from the same designer, and you might say it's a hydrangea "upside down".

This video shows how precise and how much craftsmanship one needs to make this model correctly!
Great job. I don't see many videos of yours that were more than 10 minutes long each. It's very convenient to have it all in one video!
mizi606 2 years ago
Yes, I decided to try uploading a video > 10 minutes, and it actually works. I read that partners could recently, and it seems that's true. That means my future videos won't have to be split into parts anymore. Exciting!

No it isn't. If you know how to fold the hydreadra. This should be fairly easy.

Patience and practice help. :)

I think "clover folding" might be a bit easier than "hydrangea", because you don't need to do the nasty unsink step in this one.
