memories! when the U.K. had good women sprinters who could get a baton all the way round! bev callender probaly one the best 3rd leg runners ever! kathy brill as ever1
@shottut .. your right.. England got the baton first .. you can even see that Lannaman took off running before Killingbeck did, and got the baton before the Canadians.
The commentary here is not very good, England was in the lead from the second leg from Cook to Calander, Issajenko ran a great turn to bring Canada back even with England ... but they didn't get the baton first and England being on the inside was in the lead at the final exchange.
Well, if it is Marita I would have never guessed it was... i think that they have made a mistake in their listings of the athletes... I am almost sure that is not her on the second leg.
I know that it was on a tour of New Zealand that took place in Nov/Dec 81, that some testing came back and she was banned because of it - but I can't be sure of when the banned actually took place... although if she was under any suspicion she would have been allowed to compete at the games.
Yes, it probably is Angela Phipps and I agree that Marita Payne would have given us a faster time on both the 400 relay and 1600 relay. Too bad, but the Scarborough Optomists ruled the scene back then and I think Marita was a school in Florida, so they probably weren't training with her.
I think that you could be right, it could be Alexis- Paul MacDonald. That is not something I remember ..but I know it was not Marita Payne .. they started to include her in 1983. She was a real boost to the team... again if they would have used her here, who know what would have happened... a faster time for sure!
I have checked and in the records of the commonwealth they have it listed that it was Marita, I agree with u, that it doesn't look to be her - at all, but in the records she is listed as the second competitor or runner for Canada ..??
Does anyone know who ran the 2nd leg for Canada ? .. it wasn't Marita Payne, I know the Angela's (Angella's) ran the corner's and Molly ran the anchor but who was the 2nd leg ???
Merlene Ottey dirty and was cheating here .. it is sad though that there is so much cheating going on.. it is funny that a select few, seem to take the brunt of it though.. anyway there is not question that she is a cheater
I remembed this race too bad that the last leg for Canada was so weak, although at the time I am not sure that there was another sprinter available.. the exchange wasn't great either.
Thanks athlete5399 for the series of videos of old sprints to refresh memories. By the way, I recall seeing in a sports magazine Irena Szewinska's determined gaze coming off the bend at the 1972 Olymics 200m final. Her gaze was really striking. With the audience at thh background blurred, she really stood out. with beauty in motion She came third in the end. Would you have seen this photo?
