I guess I'll have to be the dissenting voice here: not only is this performance not good, it's so bad it's difficult for me to listen to. Search for "Mefistofele 9" and Ramey's performance of it should be the first result. How anyone could think this is good after listening to that is beyond me.
@ArentWeSpecial Wow...who corrupted your ears to think that? What exactly is "bad" about his singing here? Ramey was good... a bit "wooden", but nowhere near the size of voice as Neri who was a true profondo.
@MrCafiero Neri certainly had a big, booming voice, but that doesn't mean it is in any way pleasant to listen to. For example, 0:23-0:29 his singing is completely off-tempo and sloppy, and I can barely make out the words.
The next passage is not bad, but still nothing to get excited over.....then 0:56-1:06 has much the same problem.
2:02-2:21 I really don't know how to respond to this passage. What am I supposed to be listening to here?
@MrCafiero Well like I said, there's no doubt that Mr. Neri had a very rich and sonorous bass voice, but I think that here he is singing very sloppily, for lack of a better word.
@ArentWeSpecial Conductors have the say over that. And composers did not always write how they wanted it to be in all reality. Tradition dictates that. I rather have a great voice than an overly studied, cerebral singer.
Waaah, really creepy at the beginning! Scary!

@ArentWeSpecial So your complaints are musical expression? His voice is certainly incredible.

Check out Jose Mardones. The recordings are older, but he was amazing.
