  • FUCK I just got the chills.

  • Korean people have suffered so much in the history of their nation, you can hear the pain of the heart in this song of lamentation

  • @USPatriotJW

It is a love story between husband and wife, who have promised to live together for 500 years.

If you don't know, ask. Don't assume!

  • @USPatriotJW

That is the dumbest, ignorant comment I have ever heard. This song is about lovers wanting to live together for 500 years. Dumb ass!

  • my tear running through my soul it is so sad,my heart just sinking and pounding

    i can not stand

  • I'm from Spain, and of course I didn't know this song. They (the song and the singer) are marvelous. Korean traditional songs are wonderful and very emotive. Congratulations for your rich folklore.

  • @shiesta7

  • Simply amazing! I wished there were singers like those in western conutries...

  • fantastik!!!!! no one can stay still to such a voice .... miss korea sooo much greatings from israel

Wonderfull! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Celine Dion Korean version ^^

  • what is she singing about??

    its amazing!!!

lovely greetings from your turkish friend! :)

  • What a powerful voice!!!

  • thank you so much for this

Everytime i hear this song, it reminds me of my travel in korea in Dec.2003 and the scenery from the bus that ran on the highway. i went to Guangju, Namwon (the main theatre of "春香伝") , Kuanju and Seoul. I can feel the world of "Han", that can't be seen in japanese culture. Great song and singer!!!

  • I'm from Morocco,

Beautiful song and voice, thank you Johjr.

  • This Kim Soo Hee way of expressing this song. She can relate much better than anyone else.

I can imagine and feel how she feels.

Thak you very much for psoting this version.

  • is she a pop singer? she can't sing from the throat well - most pop singers sing from the stomach, and when they try traditional korean folk songs - from the throat - it always ends up sounding sloppy like this. 김영임 can do a GREAT 한오백년 but nobody would know, because the good folk singers are cast in the shadows by the pop stars.

  • Wow, what an ultimate sound of soulfulness! She just got me goose bumps all over!!

  • @moccaolive Yeah me too. I'm almost crying here. This is fucking amazing!

  • It is from Babel.

  • Not bad. But I've heard better.

  • Are there other videos of this song performed by different artists on Youtube?

  • Unfortunately this is the only one I've found so far.

  • search "불후의 명곡 Episode 53 (2/4)" and you can hear it sung by a true folk singer - much more powerfully

  • sorry, (3/4) not (2/4)

  • robotom---I appreciate your effort but I'm wondering if you made an error? When I went to the site you referenced I got only a small sample of Korean Traditional singing (I'm not knowledgable enough to know if it was arirang) which was beautiful, but I wouldn't call it more powerful than Kim Soo-Hee's rendition of this song. I have to confess, I don't understand enough Korean to even know if it was the same song.

  • at 2:15 on video 3/4 Kim Young-Im sings Han-o-baek-nyun exactly how it's supposed to be sung. It's the only true version of the song I've found on youtube. The point of the show was for comedians and a pop singer to try to sing traditional folk songs in the traditional way. Western ears listen for sensational sounds - Kim Soo-Hee can do that, but by the way she was contorting about to try to get the right sound shows that she has no control over her own voice - in the realm of korean song.

  • Thank you for the clarification, robotom. I'm new to Korean traditional music so I don't know what to listen for. I appreciate your pointing me to this site so I can distinguish between the traditional song and style and Kim Soo-Hee's interpretation. I went back and listened a few more times, and looked up more of 김영임의 performances. Thank you again.

  • Hello, is this from South or North Korea ??

  • This is a traditional Korean folk song that has been sung at least over the few centuries, originated from Kangwon Do(Province). Folk songs from Kangwon Do tend to sound more dramatic, sentimental and even sorrowful than those from other regions beacuse Kangwondo is geographically rough with many rocky hills and rivers and the people often in the past struggled to make living out of its land.

  • Artists, philosphers, monks or convincted noblemen used to reside in the mountain to seek peace or isolation from the civilians. Kangown Do has been divided into halves only for the past 58 years since the Korean War in 1950-1952.

  • This perfomance was in South Korea. To know that, you only have to look at how Kim Soo-Hee and the audience are dressed.

  • You right! The audience is not uniformaly dressed. Less of a communist trend. However, does that mean the north koreans don't share or value these types of music

  • Jonjr, THANK YOU for posting this vid. This performance is incredible--It goes beyond language;as moccaolive said, a sound that goes straight to the soul. Synergymaster, if you know a site that features better than this, PLEASE SHARE IT. I'd be willing to cry in public to hear it.
