You also have to remember that, during the previous season, Washington did get jumped from behind during a fight with the Buffalo Braves' John Shumate. And from that point on, Washington was wary about opposing players coming up behind him in a fight.

To those saying he didn't mean to hurt Rudy: If you've ever been in a situation where you have punched someone as hard as you can, it's ALWAYS to hurt them. There are no punches thrown with that amount of force behind them that don't mean to cause harm. I believe Kermit knows he made the wrong decision in the heat of the moment and that if he could turn back time, he would not make that same decision again. But, he is still resentful that his career was ruined and defined by that moment. For that he will never just apologize and his bitterness will erroneously continue to lead him believe he is above making things right. That is the yarn that continues to spin his tragic story.

what it looked like to me is that Rudy was coming to grab Kunnert and pull him away from Kermit and Kareem. If i saw someone running like that toward a fight, i would have reacted the same way. I do not believe that Kermit meant to hurt Rudy T. it was instinctive and your instinct kicks in before reason, but i DO believe that Kermit should, at the very least, apologize to Rudy because after his reconstruction surgery, he never played the same way.

its amazing how the severity of the injury completely changed everyone's opinion. truth is, he thought he was acting in self defense. it was a mistake on washingtons part, but even rudy has the common sense not to hold a grudge so people need to stop hating on they guy for a punch. mature a little bit, if the man who got hurt from this punch realized the true situation, forgave kermit washington and realized the misunderstanding/why it happened, then you should be able to as well.

It also goes back to him being attacked from behind as a kid, and a fight from the previous year. Tomjanovich had ZERO reputation as a brawler. Guys regularly came to breakup fights or take up for their teammates, but that doesn't mean they want to start swinging punches.

Rudy wasn't exactly in attack mode with his hands crossed to protect himself. And the punch actually dislodged his skull and could have killed him. Are you going to say now the only reason it was a "big deal" was that he could've died. "Oh it was just a potential homicide. That's all."

Story goes that Rudy Tomjanovich was going over to Kermit Washington to break it up and keep him from going after Kevin Kunnert, Rudy's teammate. Kermit, whose back was turned, thought that Rudy was running up to punch him, so he turned around to protect himself and punched out Rudy in the process.

You also have to remember that, during the previous season, Washington did get jumped from behind during a fight with the Buffalo Braves' John Shumate. And from that point on, Washington was wary about opposing players coming up behind him in a fight.
