  • Hello Scooby!

I am wondering if you can show us some good lower back exercises. I am not talking about those simple, endurance exercises that are designed to prevent lower back injury when doing heavy lifting. I am talking about exercises that are designed to develop actual STRENGTH, and DEFINITION of the lower back muscles. That's off course not to say that I don't care about endurance and preventing injury. ;)

  • Haha... I was using too much weight, and I may have damaged my back.

  • great lessons but this guys gay

  • Great vid scooby!

Keeping perfect form I find this really works the rear delts more than the lats. Any pointers for engaging the lats more?

Thank you so much for your efforts!

  • haha layy off the tanning salon bro. your face looks like it was photoshopped on

  • Yes, this vid does look like a horrible photoshop job. No tanning booth for me, I wear SPF30 everytime I go out but I'm in the sun a lot and wear a hat to keep the sun of my face (hence the pale-face).

  • oh, lol, my bad.

  • you are doing it wrong

  • Hhah doing it wrong.

  • Ok, I have been trying these, but instead of using a chair. i have been doing it on the floor from my knees, is that ok?

  • scooby ur r way too funny.

  • hey guys, just a question, how much are you supposed to work out for? and with what intensity (if you are a beginner). Is it ok to work out your arms if your arms are still sore from the previous workout? thanks.

  • to get the best benefit of becoming stronger and getting more muscle growth is resting. if u lift when your arms are still sore it kills your muscle recovery and does more damage. so it means u are overtrain. resting is just as important as training hard. just wait until your arms are no longer sore and you should be aight.

  • i have question.. im 17 years and im pretty thin, but i eat alot, and i wanna have muscles in a short time. Does it make sense that i start workout or do i must wait till i've got some fat?

  • fat is NOT muscle tissue!!!! protein and fat are competley different things!!! do not try to get fat!!! God are you seriouse?!!!

  • hey man im 17 too, and puttin on fat, then " claiming " to turn into muscle just dont work. Check out scooby's link of his web page , and look under the myths section. Be patient with ur trainin, look at one of his trainin progammes and the nutrition section

  • Head to the gym and start lifting weights.

Do a lot of compound exercises dealing with your biggest muscles(legs, back, chest, shoulders). Do not over exercise and make sure you eat something healthy after you work out. I usually drink protein shakes(no flavour 100% whey) with water and some mixed berries. There is not really a way to get muscles fast(naturally), sorry to tell you that it takes a while to get "jacked". Some people are lucky with genetics and are able to bulk up fairly quickly.

  • sounds good. as long as your form is correct...

  • i do 125lb dumbbells for 8 reps is that good?

  • great videos

  • hey scooby,

how many times per week should i do this exercise? not daily right?

  • Beginner - 3 times a week!

    Advanced - 1 a week

  • how do i know how much weight to lift for barbell curls and dumbells curls

  • Lift as much weight as you can while still doing slow, good form like I show here.

  • this really works thnx for the vid scooby

  • Whats good scooby?

i wanted to ask a question.

i got a preety big chest, but it's not cut

and from what i hear you need to do more work on your back if anything

to progress in getting a more cut up chest

    is that true?

  • I would say do both. Work on decreasing your bodyfat (check out my latest video) and do weight lifting to increase your muscle mass.

  • Yeh i preety much do everything

    i have an athletic build

but i cant seem to get my chest

cut so are just keep working on both.

  • LOL EVERYTHING MOTIONLESS EXCEPT FOR ARM...OH YEA AND MOUTH...seriously youre propa funny!!!!

  • Hello Scooby: I saw your videos by casualty, and I like them very much; "they give us a fresh breaht". I think body-building has become, in this days, something artifical, and you have turn

it " back to the earth". If someone see your videos, you don´t want to see anotherones, because you "put" that part of humor in them, so they are entretaining and instructives at the same time. So congratulations again for this excelent job !!!

  • THANK YOU for for your videos! your great to look at AND your exersizes work!

  • I want to improve my strength for the martial art that I practice, im long and thin and i dont really mind about looking big, what would you recomend i do?

  • Working in sets 1-6 reps works for strength as 7-12 works for hypertrophy (size). But you shouldn't worry too much about bulking up, because you won't bulk up too much or probably at all if you don't have the right amount of protein to supplement it.

  • scooby good video, but I'm into going heavy with this excersice, I did 140lbs for ten reps, with good form, or decent form, but then again, I'm trying to get as big as humanly possible, the natural way. I've gone heavier before, like 155lbs for about 8 reps, but my form wasn't as great

  • Hey ItalianWarrior777,

140lbs is a lot of weight to do on this exercise. Just as an experiment you might consider dropping your weight and using strict form and comparing the results.

  • Hi, Scooby. Thank you for posting new videos. When I do this exercise I feel tension in my triceps -- is it ok?

You are doing great job - your webpages and the videos on youtube have helped me much to improve my trainings. Ivan, Europe.

  • Hey morte19,

You are right, it does work the triceps slightly also. You are doing it right.

  • scooby is my hero

  • Scooby, Do you workout while sick? with flu, cold, a little fever?

  • Hey vvvmaac,

Excellent question. Workout with a fever, never. Workout with a cold, always. With a cold I do 20-30 minutes of cardio first to clear the mucous out (yick) so I can breath. I actually find that my workouts with colds are really good as my focus increases.

  • Thanks scooby, I will follow your advice.

  • Thanks for another great video!

  • Would you say this is better or worse for lat building than pull-ups?

  • Hey Alectr0n,

If I could only do 1 exercise for lats it would definitely be the pullup!

  • Thanks for the reply Scooby.

  • Scooby is ripped, he must go tanning 2.

  • Hey sedative3145,

No intentional tanning, I use SPF30. Its from beach volleyball.

  • How many hours per week, would you estimate that you're out in the sun? I'd like to be that brown...

  • thanks

  • Awesome! Thnx for posting!

  • hi again scooby,

i thought this was a back excercise, not a lat one, i dont think of lats on the back, more as on the side. but great vid thanks, keep them coming!

  • i love doing dumbbell rows. glad to see you highlighted good form in this video. i see people in the gym all the time doing this exercise the wrong way. some of them are guys that are massive, which just sets a bad example for someone learning how to bodybuild. keep the good vids coming !

  • do you know whats wrong with me, my veins are really blue and show up realyl bad on my legs and arms mostly, but not everywhere else much, but still do, a few of them pop out which i can understand is normal, do you know whats goin on here?

  • Hey nizobac,

Its worth seeing a doctor to make sure nothing is wrong but my guess is that your bodyfat is just really low. What you have is what most bodybuilders struggle to get and most only achieve with diuretics and other dangerous drugs.

  • thanks for your comments, much appreciated, if anyone else has any other ideas?

    once again thanks alot scooby

  • scooby, my body fat isnt very low. its quite low, but not that low i dont think. :S

  • ive realised that most of ur vids dont revolve around cardio but, if u cud help me out it'd b much appreciated. all I do is 30 minutes of jump rope a day, and that is a strange 30 minutes with both steady jumping, and intense jumping (if that makes sense..) is 30 mins of jump rope a day sufficient to get results in terms of fat burn? (watching what I eat, aiminG 4 tonned stomach)

  • jump rope is very intense and if you really manage to keep it up for 30 minutes every day, you will definatley have good results with burning fat from it! (trust me, i tried it)

  • thx very much

  • Hey bigymac22, Cardiovascular is much more important for general health than weights! The only reason I dont do videos of it is that it would be pretty darn boring - could be funny though. Yes 30 min of jumping rope is excellent cardio and with good diet (5-6 small well balanced meals) you will lose weight.

  • i tried this type of workout once, my trainer told me its okay to yell cause it really is painful while doing this

  • good vid one question- can u get big muscles on your arms just by doing pushups?

  • hey xtiger357,

pushups will work your triceps (the back part of the arm) as well as your chest so yes, they will make your arms bigger.

  • as always scoob your wisdom astounds us all 5 stars everytime!!

  • Thanks Ash! I could use a pro like you to produce my vids though, mine suck. I need an iMac! My Vista/Adobe Premiere combo crashes so often that it would be easier to use celluloid.

  • finally a vid! scoob is the man

question: what if you do that exercise BUT elbows out and palms facing back (instead to side)? would that be more shoulder?

  • Hey Nubbs,

Since I have no medical background the way I always answer a question like this is to try it and see what muscle gets worked, primitive but 100% accurate :) You are onto something here, I'm guessing that palms facing forward would be a good variant of the dumbbell raise.

  • AS always great advice!!

  • Scooby, you are getting too skinny!

  • Hey bbgonnabe,

    Flattery will get you everywhere!

  • thnx alot man i finally got gym membership i look forward to looking like you in 25 years...... well with my face lol

  • Hey 6strngplayer,

I bet you can do it in much less than 25yrs (genetics permitting) as I was really stupid my first 10 years of lifting.

  • Another awesome video, thank you kind sir :3

  • Another great vid scooby. Big thanks as usual and I never thought about good form while doing this exercise. Now I will. 5/5

  • Hey xiayu27,

Thats why I like doing these vids, many people dont realize their form is off. When I work out at the gym I cringe and SO want to correct people on form but I have found that unless people ask for advice, they are not receptive to suggestions.

  • Hey scooby, thanks to you I moved to the next level: I quit my gym and bought free weights. Now I am training at home and have better results, thanks to your videos. Ah, could you kindly reply to my older comment? :) Thanks

  • Haha why are you looking at the camera like that :P, makes me laugh. And are you useing bodybrowncolor or what ever it called on your body to look brown? Because your face/head is more white than body.

And thanks for advice, I did them fast before, but now Im gona do em only with arm and more slower.

    PEACE!

  • Hey lolerx,

I noticed that too, it looks really stupid, for some reason the camera accentuated the color difference between my head and my body. I play a lot of beach volleyball with a wide-brim hat year round so my body is tan but my face white.

  • wow, I didn't know you were such a good Build,r i like the House you made while living in :)

  • yeah man natty is deff the way to go.. natty built body has a completely different look to it... looks alot better than when people get juiced up

  • done these today in gym, my forms very poor and im aware of it. will watch this video properly later thanks for uploading. this exersise has to be one of the messyest to do

  • Hey ItzLeo,

You have a lot of company so dont feel bad, this exercise is an easy one to let the form slide for the sake of lifting extra weight - dont be tempted!

  • Hey scooby thanks for the videos, i've learnt a lot thanks to you.

    (1) I still have the problem that whenever i workout my back i don't feel "pain" the next day, like i feel when i do chest for instance, although I'm confident that I'm doing it correctly.

    (2) I am interested in increasing the mass of my back making it look like a "second chest in d back" if you know what i mean, rather than giving it a wider look. Will dumbell or barrel rows do that? Cheers

  • Hey milkotube,

Some muscles are just tough to work out hard enough to make sore the next day but lats are not one of them. I suspect that either you havent mixed up your exercises or havent mixed up your workout technique recently. Give this a try, whatever you are doing for lats now, do the opposite. Find all new exercises if you were doing heavy weight/low rep then do low weight/high rep and visa versa. Do lats on their own day and do them intensely for 60 minutes and see what happens.

  • What workout with dumbells would I do to excersise my pecks?

  • Hey milk0tube,

On question#2, sorry I dont know quite what you are asking. Are you talking about the thickness of the lats, as in, how thick are the lat wings - 1", 2" 6"?

  • harisraja786, if your sleeping well and not risking overtraining then it will, otherwise rest.

  • hey im 15 years old and have been doing weights for about 8 months i currently use 15kg dumbells on each arm and i do weights every other day so do you think it will make my muscles grow faster if i do it every day

  • Hey Harisraja786,

IMHO, 15 years old is a bit too young to be bodybuilding. I would much rather see you doing sports like soccer, basketball, volleyball, or skateboarding which work on your coordination and balance as these skills are tough to improve on later in life. You can build muscle anytime :)

  • Scooby..i was doing this exercise with the wrong form..thanks to u now..i know the correct form now..thanks alot

  • thx scooby !!

  • Great vid Scoob! I have try this!

  • Glad I saw this, I'm using too much weight and don't wanna get injured so how much weight are you using or how much do you suggest for a begginer? thanks.

  • Hey AmazingTurd,

I cant give you a number, just keep trying increasing weights till you cant use good form - then back off one.

  • once again a great video!

    vielen Dank Scooby :)

Just wonder about the good shape of ur furniture. It isn´t the first time for this chair ... :)

  • Hey JuTobsen,

Nichts zu danken! I do use that chair a lot because I made it and its strong enough to hold a elephant. It does get banged up a little but it gives the chair character. :)

  • do you use steroids?

  • na he's been doing it for awhile and he stays on top of it. The human body is very adaptable and can be naturally transformed into any shape you want it, it just takes time....but becoming a total fatty seems to be the quickest route sadly.

  • Hey pomerami,

Thanks for the compliment!!! No I dont use steroids. Its taken me 25 years of lifting 5 days a week to build what body I have. Check out my website and you will see that I'm about health and fitness, not quick cosmetic gains.

  • good work man

  • 25 YEARS!!!!!

i don't want to wait that long! i'm not even 25 yet LOL LOL LOL

  • Hey Da6axy4ever,

Just take it one day at a time!

  • I think there's a benefit to releasing the scapula (shoulder blade) and letting it LOWER completely at the end of the movement to get a really good stretch on those muscles. But I would agree that you shouldn't do any twisting or jerking to RAISE the weight.

  • but when you let your scapular lower the muscles such as traps, levator scapulae, rhomboid minor major and minor, come into play when u begin to lift the weights again so ur not really isolating the lats and also it helps to build momentum so the work put on the lats become less intense.

thats what i have come to know. could be wrong

  • Hey e5211, you obviously know your physiology better than I do. I have zero formal education in the medical field and my knowledge is strictly practical.

  • e5211: Good points, but I guess I'm coming from the perspective of improving the strength of the particular move. If you have to row something in real life, you are going to use those secondary muscles. But if you're a bodybuilder only looking to increase the size of the lats, then Scooby's technique may be better for that goal.

  • Hey A55ORGY,

The way I approach exercise is to isolate ONE muscle and work it out. If releasing the scapula and letting it lower completely is a good exercise I personally would do it as a completely separate exercise by itself after doing dumbbell rows.

  • Scooby: Your isolation point makes some sense, but when else are you going to get a chance to effectively work the "levator scapulae, rhomboid minor major and minor" like e5211 mentioned? I don't think there are many specific exercises for those, so I feel you might as well work them during this one.

BTW, keep up the new videos! It's great seeing someone really lean AND built working out as it provides tons of motivation.

  • Love your videos keep up the fantastic work

  • Hey phatlary,

    Thanks!

  • great exercise thanks im gonna try it! :)

  • You got a great website, thanks for all your advise.

  • How many pounds did you have on that dumbbell?

I think I'll go do some of those tonight.

  • Hey experimentjon,

I was using some light weight for demo purposes. Use the heaviest weight you can and still do the exercise slow and controlled like I do in this video.

  • Thanks a lot Scooby!

Your website is great. I love home workouts.

  • Hey bachura,

Glad there are others out there doing home workouts!!

  • Thats really strict form, I've never seen them done that slowly!
