Yes, I agree. It's a mix of Brad's voice, with such clever arrangements and nice melodies .... Now about the coconut milk .... he's referring to the sperm ...after I understood it was about morning erections and sexuality you get the rest of the metaphors very quickly ... At that time I remember there was this girl I used to like an I'd daydream I was with her and she would smell like coconuts .... which I linked to tanning lotion which I love its smell...funny ...isn't it?
Hmm, I suspected you'd been referring to sperm, but are you quite sure? He says "You would SWEAT coconut milk, and I would lie restless", like it's coming out of HER. Couldn't it be that other thing, HER thing? After all, the song is not really about the intercourse, I feel it's about the anticipation of it, erection, yes, exactly. I doubt he "would lie restless" immediately after. What do you think?
(I really hope you are over 18, hehe, a nice intellectual conversation, eh :)
I reread the lyrics and in that verse I think you're right. They met in the jungle, and he lied awake, restless. But I think that most of the rest of the lyrics are non sense, like the Fly parts ....the meadows of her leg??? ... Brad tries to be funny most of the time with imaginative ideas and imaginery ...but in this case the song's tone is definitely sad .....which makes that song very weird ....that's why when I listen to it I just remember a girl I used to like at that time.
Awww, the Fly parts are my favourite parts :))))))
My take on them:
"None but a fly could settle on the meadow of your leg". None, meaning not even he, the lyrical subject himself, she wasn't his to claim yet, he couldn't even touch (or whatever) her leg, it's about the part of not knowing which boundaries you're allowed to cross at the start of the relationship, the flirty, seductive part.
"Now I've grown etc... not even flies could settle on the meadow of your leg". Now it's different. He is the man now, she belongs to him romantically, her legs are his to touch, and he won't let anybody and anything place their claim on her body, not even flies. Note also how the different stages of romance are expressed by the change of seasons - summer, autumn, winter.
When I was younger I used to daydream a lot. For me it was better than the real thing ....that cause me a lot of problems because at the time I needed to socialize with the girls I liked I was a total incompetent, I didn't build any experience. At that time I realize that I had to stop living in the imaginary world of the music atmospheres and I had to confront reality. For me surrealism is more important than reality itself. I guess that makes an escapist ...
It's not a bad thing, when an escapist starts to put their dreams into reality, they can make any experience worth remembering, since they tend to mythologize anything that happens to them, like, it's not just a kiss, it's THE kiss, it's the moment of belonging, whatever. They can make poetry out of any encounter. I am like that too, and I must say I started enjoying reality and the realm of the physical when I became the hero of my own love stories.
It's hard to be an escapist. You never fit into any society, and you're always out of place because you belong somewhere else and for a strange reason you are meant to live in this planet and in this dimension. Remembering can be very dangerous too ... I could be a prisoner of nostalgia and forget about the present. Just Imagine how was my life when I had to separate from my first girlfriend ... and music used to connect me to all those memory places...really sad ...
I feel nobody really belongs here, and at the same time everybody does, it's just a matter of perception, after all, we are all here for a very strange reason, and none of us is here for a long time. I'm trying to be wary of statements that include "never (fit)" or other extreme suppositions, though they might as well be heartbreakingly tasty and enjoyable in some perverse way. Being out of place makes you different, it's better than being common :)
@angiegeorge Well ...allow me to disagree ...there are plenty of people very well settled in in this life/world. Even though some of them seem to suffer to different degrees they seem pretty comfortable living this experience. This life is a very mysterious place, few of us know why we are here (or have a distant idea) and the rest keep playing games and fulfilling desires that end up lost in the innermost voids. I've tasted a little of that and I didn't like it. "no one I think is in my tree"
Just tell me this: Are you envious of those who are comfortable here? Of those who think they got it all figured out? I am not. I prefer to be different because it's what I am. I prefer to wonder and I am damn well aware of the fact that life and existence is a strange thing and I don't and can't really know what I am and what I am about and what for. And I am clever enough not to be comfortable here.
I propose that we take that part of the conversation to the inbox, though. ;)
Ha, not so much. You must agree SIYO is much less subtle, the metaphores are pretty explicit and...hmmm... biologic (as opposed to geographic in MOS), and the focus is different. Lovemaking becomes the physical background for something global going on in his head. I would compare SIYO to soft porn, whereas MOS is pure erotica.
Wow ....you have really figured it out !!!! .... I'm not that intellectual myself, I like to feel the songs more than analyze them too much. I like Swimming more than sunrise, but both are reaaly great pieces of art .....I think CTdummies is a very underrated band ....mostly on albums like God Shuffled and a Worm's Life
@angiegeorge And I agree with you .....My own sunrise has a much more hidden meaning .....is more surrealistic. In fact I used to fantasize that the girl Brad was talking about would smell of coconut milk ....which I thought very original and so tender ....at that time. Then I found out that it wasn't about the girl not real coconut smell ..... Things are sometimes different to what they seem ....
You are right to feel the songs, I feel them too, I wonder if'd like this song so much if Brad didn't have such a tenderness and warmth in his voice.
Tell me about the coconut, please, what did you find out? :)))

Exactly! "Sexually explicit" but subtle, one of the most beautiful love songs I've heard.
I was 16 when I bought "A Worm's Life", and I wished then that one day someone would love me the way Brad describes it.
