  • for few moments I was holding my breath there... hahahaha... my goodness! love can really drive a person crazy!

  • I notice you left out what happens afterwards... where he goes nuts, threatens to kill Eugene, and nearly attacks her.

  • this is what loves does to you. it thrashes the hell out of you. scares you to pieces but calms and subdues you all at the same time. scaryyyyy!

  • I was wondering was it really love he felt for the girl or is it only an obsession. What a character that will take time to appreciate. I wonder if he needed someone to open up and someone to take care of him but then the way he has growm will always let him be the ''scary''' side.

  • It's typical Dickens. Trust him to set a proposal scene in a graveyard.

  • I have to admit . . . I felt very bad for him. All he needed was someone to love and think well of him. I was rooting for him until this scene, but I still, deep down, wish she had said yes (no need to draw your swords Eugene fans). I do believe he HONESTLY loved her . . . just is a very CRAZY (o.O) kind of way that's all.

  • @AnadriewenCuthalion It's pretty evident that he did "love her" in his own way as Lizzie says herself later in the series. But she definitely made the right choice o.0 if you think about it someone capable of such obsession, lack of self respect and vindictive selfishness and violence really needs something more than 'someone to think well of him.' I can hardly think *you* would have accepted such a proposal.

Morrissey is a terrific actor- one of the best film performances of any kind ever IMO.

  • You left out the part when he goes crazy at the end and almost hits her! :O

  • Was anyone else rooting for Bradley until this part of the miniseries?

At first he seems just this lonely, shy, sensitive guy, who just needs a friend, which would make him a nice match for the sweet and gentle Lizzie Hexam... and then we get to the proposal scene, and you just find yourself thinking, "Lizzie, run for your life, change your name and move somewhere far away."

Those of you who haven't read the book, just trust me: He's even more scary in the novel.

  • The man was all aflutter, he has no confidence in himself and has probebly never been reassurred of any empathy never mind Love in his life. I felt for the guy, because chances are he'd be a lot less agitated and much more tranquil with the emotional attachment and love of a good woman.

Still such forebearence is rare in such matters.

  • Nothing to do with THE Morrissey right? I'm loving this book, as any Dickens one. In fact only two or three for completing his bibliography*. Love Eugene.

*Letters, notes and cake recipes not included.

  • David Morrissey is my fave actor! :)

  • "Draw me to any disgrace"

What is it with the men in these period dramas? Their like jelly everytime, whether its Dickens, Hardy, Trollope or Austin writing it. Hard to tell who's the stronger sex here, get a grip.

  • Gosh, what a creep!

  • That was the scariest proposal ever!!! I felt I was watching a horror movie rather than a romantic one...scaaarry, i think i would have Ran away from him lol, did u see how he held the headstone?...David Morrissey performed this scene like a pro!

  • @ Piper5468

"David Morrissey performed this scene like a pro!" Exactly why I felt like sharing it. He did a maginificent job!

  • @potomusicfan4ever as I said below, one of the best acting performances of any kind I've ever seen (and I'm something of a film buff.)

the whole series was exceptionally cast, acted, scored and written.

  • That's a miserable excuse for a proposal! Thanks for posting though because I'd love to see this.

  • ok, last comment, I promose. ...all sympathy for this partucular man leaves you when he flies at Lizzie after shouting "Then I hope I may never kill him!" upon her refusal. she's a timmid girl, but i'd have kneed him in the gonads and ran.

  • It's interesting to note the similarity of a proposal to another Lizzie, namely Elizabeth Bennett in "Pride & Prejudice": both proposals start out accusing the woman of basically being the ruin of her suitor! I think you have to feel sorry for both of them here: for Headstone because he' so completely out of control and for Lizzie because she's now responsible for whatever he does next! No wonder she's scared.

  • @MsStarsea I drew the P & P connection too. And I'd be scared too...the man is unstable! At least Darcy was ... not crazy. Headstone has a complext that filters every decison he makes through the eyes of scorn. i feel for him, but if if i were Lizzie, I'd be lookng around for rocks or sticks in case he decided to flip on me.

  • @Lady4HisMajesty Exactly! God forbid you ever did something that he didn't approve of... abusive relationship in the making. Even if it would be 'just' emotional/psychological abuse.

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I saw OMF back in 1998 and it was David Morrissey's performance that stayed with me - he was amazing (and still is)!

  • @mrsjameshook his performance stays with me too...so much so that even when i saw him in Sense and Sensability as Colonel Brandon, I was still struck with the stalker vibe!

  • he was nervous i thought it was adorable i felf bad for him...have you ever felt that strongly about someone that you cant find the right words and everything sounds stupid or brash, it isnt easy

  • Exactly how I feel about this scene duckielove27.

  • @duckielove27 yeah, but he could have attempted to get to know her a bit first...beyond the prospect of becoming her teacher (which was thwarted). i'd freak out too if someone i valued as nearly a complete stranger started professing love to me...

  • i could NEVER marry such a man! what a temper...who knows what else he would be capable of if this sets him off already!

  • gosh! i love him! what an absurd proposal. he's a bit like bishop frollo, right?

  • He's proposing in a graveyard...

  • ROFL

  • does anyone find it funny tht his name is mr. headstone and they r standing in a cemetary w/ headstones?

  • I thought the same thing :]

  • LOL I know.

  • His acting is a bit much IMO--why would any woman want to be with such a nut job? Thankfully she doesn't!

  • Why is he so... out of control? Does he have a disease or is this obsessive love?

  • I'm writing an essay on this proposal. He is a bit compulsive and obsessive.

  • He was soooo amazing in this scene!!! <333

  • God - I haven't seen this in years! Thx so much. This was fanastic!

  • Is it wrong that i find him strangely alluring when he goes mental in this?? Actually that doesn't need to be answered.

  • No, it's not wrong at all. I'm right there with you!

  • Same here. Honestly I probably would have said yes.

  • Oh! You stopped it before he goes really bonkers:)

  • He's an amazing actor. And acts so crazy in this scene!!

  • he's a luney!

  • Is there a way that this miniseries could be posted on youtube?

  • It is posted!

  • pls post more clips from this movie:)

  • Yey! Finally someone thinks the same! More david please!! :o)

  • <3 David Morrissey
