@GingerGarlicOnion Ravi Shankar was very disappointed in his Woodstock performance due to the rain, the photographers, and the stoned audience. Even his Live At The Woodstock festival was largely overdubbed. As psychedelic as his music was, Shankar himself did not approve of psychedelics.
why did i not here of this, why does nobody talk about ravi shankar at woodstock, everybody knows the who was there and jimi hendrix n stuff, i've never heard of ravi being there until now, i feel ........stupid
He has most likely used but Im sure he understands that they are distractions of more important things and when used indulgently as intoxicants they sedate the mind to sucumb to the world of ilusions. That is why herbs must be used with the respect they deserve. This is something easily understood in Indian culture. Only used for meditative purposes
I believe that he has used what we in the western world call drugs but not in the intoxicating self indulgant sense more in the spiritual sense for meditation as it is custom to use cannabis and lotus flower for meditational practices.
I believe that he has used what you might call drugs but not in the intoxicating sense we see it in the western world. He most likely has used cannabis or lotus flowers in the sense of spirituality and meditation as it is typical in their culture for the use of these in complete respect of the plants.
Shankar complained to the Indian press how the fans at Woodstock applauded when he tuned his sitar. 'Who was listening to the music? They were all stoned. Completely stoned.' So I'm sure Shankar has never done drugs.
Good shit man. I preferred Shankar at Monterey, but this is still great. What the fuck the editors were thinking by not putting Ravi in the movie is beyond me...
@Lynx1525 I thought of a very simple reason for this, but I prefer not to evoke it here and I might be wrong... though, they had black people on this show! I guess it was too "exotic" for western people at the time.
I was a teenager during Woodstock but too young to attend. :-( I remember when George Harrison went to India with Shankar and learn to play the Sitar. It's about the same time he became a Hare Krishna devotee as well, I believe. Thanks for posting!!
What's the name of the instrument at 1:30?? I love it

Those are Indian tabla; not exactly the same as bongo drums, but you're right, they are played fast. The man on tabla is Alla Rakha.
