Will someone help me please? I'm learining to thumb pick like he's doing with my pick tuckerd under my index finger, and i have long-ish nails. The problem is the part i play with my thumb i can't hear, i have a gretsch like him and a nice amp, i just can not hear my thumb parts? Help!?
@TheEKCT No... once playing a style becomes natural, individual licks from that style begin to blend together. Slowing down means thinking about the notes, and the point of practice is to develop muscle memory and familiarity with the fretboard so you don't have to think about the notes.
@ZomBLord I disagree. As a lead player, I have found that I improvise the best when I actually think ahead a bit about the next phrases. If I just let my fingers do all the work, I fall into a rut, playing the same phrases that I have been playing for years now. When I think ahead about the notes, the solo comes out fresh each time.
@TheExiledTexan Phrases, yes. But individual notes are hard to think through, and play slowly. I'm sure you experienced early on what I'm talking about, sightreading a song from classical notation or tablature, playing one note at a time, and being unable to hear the song behind the notes.
I think through phrases too, but it's always, E minor run at the third neck position, or play such-and-such a pattern down a scale; it's never the notes. Which is why it's hard to slow down.
@ZomBLord Oh, now I get what you were saying. I thought we were talking within the context of scales. Yes, I agree; without scales, I would be unable to play fast, and thinking through the notes would not be an option.
@hisuky Yes it is a Gretsch Nashville with a custom paint job. They do sell that exact model though. Setzer rarely plays anything other than Gretsch. Come to think of it, the only other guitar I've ever seen him play was a Gibson L-5 on the song 'Lonely Avenue'. At least I think it was an L-5. Sure looked like one.
What impresses me most is that he plays like... THAT and he does it like he's doing... just anything. O.O Maybe one day I'll be half as good as him. \o/
Nearly anyone can learn to metal shred -- but to be able to play like this, few can do. This stuff is physically difficult and MUSICALLY insane. Coming up with melodies and rhythms that breathtaking goes far beyond sheer chops; it enters its own special domain. Amazing.
I guess you just have to feel it, like speaking another language or even a different dialect of one you know... It might take me years but, "B" , what you do is allow the audience to feel it and a person just can't stand still when you play. Pretty powerful gift you have! Come back to Portland, Oregon soon.
I dont get it...why is it when a great guitar player plays, it can make some people feel lousy like it hurts their self-esteem?
Great guitar players inspire me to play guitar more, I love it, I live it...I never saw it as some sort of competition or a desire to become a rock star (not that I would a very good rock star anyway).
Can anyone tell me any tracks where i'd hear that kind of jazz guitar? I love the sound, i've no idea where to start looking though! Any tracks by Brian Setzer or anyone else
@MrNoodleMeister Well some good places to look are George Benson's guitar playing, Django Reinhardt (the father of gypsy jazz), John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian.
Thanks Brian! Great lesson on how to kick everybody elses a-s-s on guitar. You've inspired us to toss our instruments directly into the trash and take up something like...accounting instead.
Dreamy! He's so amazing! Please check out the song I wrote as a tribute to Setzer and the Cats. I reference 15 of their songs in it. It's called "This Kitten is Smtten"
I remember coming out of Mabel's in 1987 or 1988 in Champaign, Illinois and there was this dude with big yellow hair. Guess who it was? Awesome playing. Is Urbana home? Thanks for the music.
Hey Setzer die hards! I wrote a Setzer tribute song (a la Gene & Eddie) called This Kitten is Smitten. In it, I reference 15 Setzer/Cats songs. How many can you find?
On man. Creatively, he does in one video more than a million guitar players do in a million other videos. So many musical approaches in one solo. Country, blues and jazz in one perfect bland. Unbelievable.
