You CAN make the border (bevel) of a Modern string indicator or control transparent.
Select the coloring tool
Right click on the border you want to hide (this will bring up the color palette)
Hold down the "f" key while you hover over the color palette
Click on the "T" in the upper right corner
The border is now transparent
