is that meter to the left of your home screen for your cpu work load and your RAM workload?
good vid btw :) but what wil the ready boost actually speed up becasue im thinking of buying some memory sticks and plugging them in the back of my pc then leaving them there to be dedicated to ready boost :)
With ReadyBoost, you can use the space on your USB/Flash card to act as extra RAM. So if you have 4GB of RAM(like me) then adding 2GB of ReadyBoost space is like having 6GB of space! If you have a computer, like a netbook, that's slow, ReadyBoost can definitely help, big time. Hope this helps :)
OK, let me clear things up: Your RAM(Random Access Memory) is basically the muscles of your computer. It writes data to it, which lets your computer find things faster; the more Ram, the faster the speed. But Sometimes you just don't have enough RAM. If you're playing a game that requires intense 3D graphics, Multiplayer action, etc., then all of that space gets used up. That's when your computer starts getting sluggish. Ran out of space :( see next comment.
@111arian111 External Hard Drives are considered Hard Drives and you cannot use ReadyBoost with the Hard Drives; however, there's a registry hack to force either an external or internal hard drive as ReadyBoost. The downside is the hard drives take longer than flash memory. Flash memory = Fast; Hard Drive = Slow
I have windows vista too and it realy works, well it's not like adding RAM and you wont feel much performance in games, but it opens folders faster :)
Note* With Windows 7, Do not use the slider, Windows 7 has improved on ready boost greatly, it allows for no no limit boost, as in Vista the limit was around 4 gigs. So instead of the slider, there will be a circle to Dedicate this drive to ready boost, which will allow for even more of a performance boost
@lowtone10 linux software is too simple,so simple it doesn't even do it's job right,it will take another 10 years till linux will be good enough or maybe more
hey is it similar to installing a new ram card??? caz ma ram is only 2gb (which is not enough to play crysis i guess) i can only upgrade ma ram upto 4gb which willl cost me 60$. but if i buy a 8gb flash its cheaper but is it the same result as installing a new ram? can i play new games wit it.
@punkking89 In the past I tested a 2gig flash with 2 gigs of ram and loading a file folder with alot of pictures seemed about a sec faster. On the downside it seemed to knock off about 5 FPS in games. Get the 4 gigs of ram forget ready boost. Readyboost seems better if you only have a gig of ram.
Is there a way to reverse the effect? Or the space used permanently reversed for efficiency? I have a 8G and I used 2G's on the performance but I can't figure out if it's possible to retrieve the space.
Important info: Windows Readyboost is most effective when you have a small amount of RAM, primarily 512-1GB. If you have more than 2GB, it won't do much!!!!
You know, I have been using Vista for a few years, on two different laptops, and I have never seen a difference when using them with or without readyboost. So call me a bit suspicious about its capabilities.
@TheSpecialOneX14 I have a Asus laptop with 4 gb ram, and when i opened readyboost it said:
"Readyboost is not activated on this computer because the systems discpreferences are to high according to windows experience index. this computer don't need ReadyBoost." SO I don't think we'll need it ;)
I have to wonder, does anyone think I'll notice improvements on windows 7 if i use a collective of 5 gbs or readyboost usb devices? I already have 4 gbs of ram and the fastest possible storage device configs that i care to use.
ReadyBoost allows better performance when accessing files and what not because it puts less use on your memory, without it your PC would consume more memory. Windows always works in connection with the hard drive as well but because ReadyBoost takes advantage of a faster response it benefits from dual outcomes.
It's not going to be RAM. The whole point of RB is to get your computer to stop writing to the HD. Because writing to the HD is slower than flash-based memory.
All Readyboost does is pull commonly used files from flash memory, IF Vista decides it is faster. Flash memory has faster access times but slower throughbut than your hard drive.
Limitations of Readyboost:
4GB max. usage regardless of your flash memory size.
Vista wipes and reloads this 4GB file every time you boot. This will add to hard drive churning when you boot. You are copying 4GB of data at roughly 25MB/sec. (I set mine to 1GB)
RB data file is encrypted, leading to additional slowdown.
I have a 16GB thumbdrive, it's only a shame that Vista won't use all 16GB, it would seem it will only use 4GB at most unfortunately. If it used all 16GB, it could really stuff some data on there and actually be useful.
I am officially in love with windows Vista! I tried it with an ipod and I could get about 4gb of space!! I mean sure, I had to change the Ipod's registry a bit but it still worked! I love it!
No. I use ReadyBoost to take less writing off the hard drive. In essence, it saves you battery life and performance at the same time...
Yes, it would make a difference for you. It wouldn't make a difference, if not make your PC any slower, if you had around +16GB of RAM... I don't recommend ReadyBoost for those really fast systems; because it would just slow it down if anything... ;)
ReadyBoost does help with 64-Bit OS's, but again, it'll speed up any OS! :)
i have an 250gb external hard drive. and i could only add 4gb to the computer wtf i wanna add like 200gb to the computer so it could speed up like a mother fucker runing at 5ghz hahahahahahaha i wish i could make it 5ghz
Using a hard drive would be slower than using Flash-based memory. That just ruins the part about Readboost. Flash memory is faster than your hard drive... It would probably slow it down if you added 250GB hard drive as Readyboost...
ok so my notebook comes with a hybrid HDD, can i still add another 4gb SD card and turn readyboost on? can the hybrid HDD and readyboost work together?
You meaning virtual memory and readyboost will work together... Yep, they should. But your HD is typically slower than a flash memory card... It's just how it is...
Haha, there no RAM gained. It's not RAM guys! It's Virtual Memory. Your computer will not report any more RAM; because it just isn't RAM. It's using the drive to write stuff that would be written to your hard drive... Since flash memory is faster, this makes it a lot faster than using your hard drive... If you remove the drive, obviously Vista won't use it for Virtual Memory, and just use your hard drive instead (which Windows does by default). ;)
so are you saying that if I had a 1 TB hard drive, and it recognized it as a flash drive that I would be able to brag that I have have 1.003 TB of RAM (the 3 being the RAM I have now)
That is not RAM. That is virtual RAM. ;) Windows will not report it as real RAM. It's just virtual RAM. And besides, RAM is a lot faster than your hard drive. You really wouldn't want to rely on a hard drive for your RAM anyways....
I have a problem. I have a flash drive that is 1 gb, and when I started using it for readyboost, and everytime I restart it says: "disk error; press any key to restart" and It will do that until I take my drive out. the file system is fat and there is nothing on it. what is happening?

This can be done without readyboost on memory sticks and sd cards, it just takes a second without it.
This is good because hard drives have moving parts, this can mean slow page filing.
tbh Linux does swap/page filing much more efficiently than Windows, so it's even more fast for when you're doing it for SD cards and memory sticks.
