Coincidence or fate, the mixing of the person and the times. Yes, her life was often sad. I think of bitterness when I think of her. The bios do explain a lot of her conflicts of right and wrong, power and abuse and money. We all wish her a peaceful afterlife. She was somethin' on screen!
Louis Brooks was amazing! I love her hair cut, her face is just beautiful. I love the silent movies, and I love to look at all the old fashions, furniture etc... If it wasn't for these fresh faces, we wouldn't be were we are today! I just think she was a strong actress and she needed to be recolonized for her talent and looks! I loved watching her interview in the 1970's. It was so cool to see her still. Rest in Peace My Lady, you were beautiful in life as you still are to everyone in Death.
I read the biography on her by Barry Paris and her book "Lulu In Hollywood". I was struck by how sad she ultimately was. She was raped as a child and I truly believed it haunted her all her days. She was very promiscuous, even by Hollywood's "standards", but I think she wanted to love and be loved but was afraid of it really. She even cut ties with her beloved brother late in life. She also seemed to be afraid of true success, often sabotaging her own efforts. RIP, lovely Lulu!
Amazingly, she knew Vivian Vance of "I Love Lucy" fame as they were both born/raised in Cherryvale, Kansas. Amazing such a small town would get two major stars. (The next town over was the hometown of playwright William Inge."
she had a more unconventional, confrontational sense of fashion than your average flapper of that era. doing german expressionist film was the best move she could have made. artless hollywood vanity could not satisfy the striking prescense she naturally brought to the screen.
I visited Louise's grave in Rochester last weekend. It was a dream made possible by chance. What a tiny stone. My thanks to the person who left the vase. I changed your flowers. It was pouring down rain, but as I finished my rosary the sun came out. God rest you, Louise.
In August I cut off 3 feet of my hair to have a Brooksie-inspired bob.
