  • One day, I hope that we would be able to walk into a building which hosts a library of games and consoles for us to borrow for free... who am I kidding that day would never come. Vandals and thieves would either break or still the wares, and companies would paint it as piracy.

It's sad to see games be stifled by greedy corporations and belligerent children when we've barely begun to recognise it's potential as an artistic medium.

  • Hey Mate, I hear you about online-play. Back in the day, I played Phantasy Star Online (Dreamcast). I met people I did not know and they were nice folks who helped each other. Its sad those days have turned into what you described. It seems like on-line play has become so detached unless you meet up with friends.

  • yea i agree with you on EA

no manual bullshit so lazy and to much greed

  • Yeah no manuals in games really piss me off they're all doing it now! I think they should at least lower the price, isn't that why pc games are cheaper? Oh and E.A, used to be so cool.

  • i'm in my 40's...you youngsters... i feel like im kranky kong in the DKC games...lol. i agree that the day gaming goes all digital content im done with anything new. but i dont think we have to worry about that. PSP go kind of proved to me that people still want physical media. and then you have onlive service. Umm yeah it's not really taking over the gaming world..lol. so i think were safe for awhile.

  • I agree with this 100%! Also, what happened to games coming with posters? Why does everyone hate anything japanese? Why are a majority of preorder bonuses some lame weapon in the game and not a physical item. I could go on and on. I still really enjoy current gen games but there is quite a few things I don't care for.

  • @SuperBeardedGamer

I also still love modern games but if I had to pick between modern and retro, then show me to my Delorean!

  • @lawnboyspost1975 I call shotgun!

  • I mostly play single player games, mostly because that's what I grew up with and it's the only good way to experience a STORY. I want a story, I want to feel like i am experiencing something, even in a shooter. I try MMOs and I can feel myself grinding till the next monthly payment. That's why I don't touch them, even the free ones. I now play about 2-4 hours per month, if that, online. And about 2 hours minimum of single player game, per day.

    Boxes+manuals, I miss them.

  • I remember a few years ago when I played my first game online for a console (PC online for a long time before then), it was the multiplayer demo for Far Cry Something for the 360 (not 1 and 2 wasn't out yet). First I was shocked about how bad the graphics were, but the real shocker was the several 12yo boys cursing like I could have never imagined it.Hearing their tiny crackling voices try to act tough was so funny and annoying, I never again allowed online chat in console games.

  • @Trusteft

I know I still find it sad when I hear som eone that young swearing like a trooper!

  • Oh and im 30 and I loved the fact that I grew up with the nes and i got to see the industry grow. I can appreciate what has come and what I have.

  • Dude I couldnt agree more with you. I want a physical copy. People say that there is nothing but casual gamers now a days, but think about it. I have pride in my movie and game collection. I have about 6 games downloaded on my wii, and I couldnt care less about them if I lost them. Yes I do think that the gaming companies are just trying to max profits and not giving us what we are paying for. $60 for a game that needs massive patches and has no manual is horse shit. Great responce man.

  • @gabbogabbo

I think the next generation may well be the start of the end of that special gaming experience, owning a physical game!

  • Beautiful response, Dave,

Loved it when you disagreed w/ Alex saying he's not too old for this stuff; i'm 34 now + yes, we grew up in the best of times not only in videogaming but in automobile design, movies, and music.

    --brian

  • @izaurralde

We def grew up at the perfect part of the gameing cycle and I wonder how many people will never appreciate this!

  • Cool response! The one thing that jumped out to me about Alex's GOW story was the fact that he was the last man standing, how could people have the nerve to moan at him when he had played better than them to get to that point? Totally agree with pretty much everything you said mate, especially the greedy games publishers.

  • @ninjabearhug

I know eh, who is someone to criticise the guy who out lasted them and yet they feel they are the ones who can take the moral high ground. This is why I only online game on a handfull of titles that I have hand picked!

  • 30s are the new 20s, thats what i keep telling myself lol, agree with what you say where our age group had the goodstuff, nes, snes, master system,megadrive,ps1,ps2,n64,amiga ah the list is endless so many great memories and games, happy days

  • @bravotwozero007

The thing I am most proud of my age is I got to grow up with when computers got cool and so I experienced all the classics!

  • @lawnboyspost1975 agree with you mate, i started with the good old 128k speccy and went from there, great times wish i was a lad again ha ha

  • I know what you mean bro, i still havent converted to the new gen yet. I prolly will after xmas though. I guess the reason i stick with the old school stuff, i because i loved them when i was a kid and it brings back memories. I dont mind Downloads to much but i really hope it dont go to digital copies only. That ruins the beauty of collecting. I think its Blasphemy if you ask me :0

  • @DavidLeeT

Good point Dave, while I do modern game I def retro for the memories it lets me relive of a truly magic time of my life. No problems, No responsibilities, No Job and no facial hair! lol

  • Great response dude. "how much they can cut off & get away with" sums up modern gaming for me in nutshell, its just more money for less content. A future with no physical copy is a future thats inevitable but a future i do not want. If i pay money for somthing i want it there in my home, i want to be able to see it, touch it etc.. i dont want to say yeah i've got a game... you cant actually see it or anything, its an invisible game but its there.. no i've paid money give me somthing for it!

  • @shockz16

The day the physical copy of the game dies is the day I throw myself fully 100% into Retro gameing!

  • All of the things you mentioned in this video have kept me away from modern consoles. Everything is made as cheaply as possible, the consoles break, the single player campaigns are frequently ignored during development, there is a serious lack of originality, and you have to pay for games you already own. There is a great way to avoid all of this hassle, stick to retro gaming.

I have noticed that the problems I have listed above are not as pronounced with the Wii. I miss Sega.

  • @edt1138

As much as I have my isses with modern game systems, I can't lie I would love for Sega to return to the Console market!

  • In terms of physically acquiring a copy of the media, do you think your opinions on the matter are influenced more as a collector than as a gamer? I really like owning digital copies of things because it's less clutter, but i'm not a collector so maybe that is the key difference.

I really enjoy your channel keep up the good work.

  • @BadApathy

    Cheers Dude

  • at the moment, your vidoes are as good or better than the youtuber superstars ie pete dorr finngamer tv& lust and gamster81,its just more down to earth, big thumbs up

  • @N64zoot

Hey thanks for the very nice words mate, that means a lot!

  • Completely agree. I still love current gen, but the profiteering and population of idiots online are definitely a problem. When playing online, you basically have to lower your expectations and get ready to mute the assholes. As for single player, if the campaign is crap, I just don't buy the game.

  • @castlevania78

I still buy primarily for single player campaign but I feel that it is something else that is being taken for granted by the game companies!

  • I do agree with you on companys trying to get as much money as bloody possible by doing bloody little as possible. when you talk about cod only being a mulitplayer I disagree, it's the players who gave it that idea, most of my friends won't play cod anymore because other ass hole gamers only talk about the mulitplayer and say the campaign is hit and they haven't even played it, I play cod for the single player, I absoulotely love it, i agree that once physical copies go it will be shit,

  • @AUTOCONS1

Trash talking is one of the bane of my online gaming life and def a reason I really pick carefullt what I do game online!

  • I personally feel we should be encouraging the elimination of paper manuals; considering the amount of units produced for each game, it's an utter waste of resources for something that's useful for maybe 30 minutes during its life. While it doesn't make for the same buyer or user experience for you, we gotta be pragmatic here.

That said and done, I enjoy your videos despite being not much of a gamer!

  • @doogdoogdoog

Personally I will still want a manual but thenas I trade most of my current gen games I feel that in it self that is technically recycling!

  • Myself i'm afraid i've already started to walk away..its sad but i feel the same way about single player campaign and online trashtalking and all that//i spend more time nowadays on my original xbox games ( which i love cause they still had awesome cmpaigns) & my megadrive & also playin my 3DS in bed ...oh & my kid he is 11 months old...i feel like crying that i wont be able 2 get him a game for xmas when he is older but it will be a credit card or a code required to download it...sad sad...

  • @RedH0plite

Thats a good point, future generations of kids are going to miss out on on e of the best things about gaming, owning, buying and the journey involed in the final result of getting a game!

  • Your right i feel the current gen consoles have become rather souless. Nearly every game released is some kinda FPS. I like FPS but this is over kill. When you compare the diversity and scope of current gen games to some old skool computers you mentioned like C64 or ZX. The sheer diversity of the games on old skool computers puts current gen to shame. I think that the salvation of current gen consoles lies in their indie games.

  • @seedofthepeople

Def agree about Indie games and Pier Solar proved that!

  • Great responce, i think part of the problem with current gen is that its feels like its all about market share and using a game as a vehicle to making progressivly more money in a hundred different ways, rather than just focusing on the core game itself.

With retro games i feel i get the core sigleplayer gaming experience, which is what many current gen games dont give me these days.

  • @Retrosofer

Def agree there, too much fight for a cut of the market and a def loss of the personal feel of what made gaming such a special experience!

  • Excellent video and you make a ton of great points. I haven't really immersed myself in current gen gaming, for one I can't really afford to and two I don't feel the need to. There's not a whole lot that current gen has that appeals to me. Granted I do own a Wii but I find myself playing virtual console games more than anything, that nostalgia factor really has a hold on me. I don't care for the cod's or the bf's, the last fps I played online was day of defeat which is a ww2 half life mod on pc.

  • @SMAAAASHTV

I have a modded Wii so while I own a Megadrive I do a massive amount of retro gaming on that system. I think thats why its my fav console of the current gen, it def has a retro kinda sticking to gthe roots of gaming feel about it!

  • Great points Dave :) No manual with a HD camera now that makes no sense lol, if there's one thing you need a manual for it's a new bit of tech. To just expect the customer to log on and download it is arrogant and unprofessional. Plus there are still quite a large chunk of people who are not online so what are they supposed to do? I do wonder with digital distribution if it will be solely digital or if it will be like music and have both digital and physical media?

  • @Snestastic

Thats a very good point I still know a few people who aren't online and its nothing to do with them not being a fan of modern technology. I wonder if online only manuals is an abuse of consumer rights?

  • I have quite a few modern gen games, but I have trouble sticking with them, finishing them, putting up with constant updates & games where the single player campaign barely lasts an evening session. I would rather play older gen games, they seem to have much more content & keep you playing. Even ignoring the 8/16 bit consoles, I have games on the PS2 that are far more compelling than anything that I have on the modern consoles. Doesn't help that the kids steal the PS3 to play Lego though :)

  • @electricadventures

You need to get your self a copy of Pier Solar for the Megadrive for a modern experience of a retro game that restores your faith in game companies. Just a shame that such a small company can't put out more games! ;0(

  • @lawnboyspost1975 Cool thanks, I'll definitely have to look it up.

  • Also i noticed alot of people jumping on the bandwagon for certain releases. Thats not what i have a problem with but i have a problem with when they jump on the bandwagon and then trash older games in the series. Like Skyrim and Duke Nukem. Ive seen comments on videos for the latest ones saying "Oh the graphics in the old Elder Scrolls were so bad. How could anyone call that good" Its a fuckin insult to genuine fans of the series.

  • I remember going into small game stores and looking through the hundreds of obscure games by small companies. Most were shit but you did find the odd gem. There is so much money in the industry now that you only get the big name mainstream releases which tend to be sequels that have about 5 hours of gameplay in the main campaign. Also i think the fanboy phenomenon has grown even more in the young gaming community. Seeing videos like "Skyrim vs Cod MW3". Wtf do they have in common to be compared.

  • @louiscfc93

I still remember the first game store I went in to with my Mum when I was like 8 and bought a game called Halls Of The Things and it was shite! ;0)

  • Excellent video! I was just having this discussion with a friend. The broken state that games get released in these days is disgusting. It is a patch as the need arises approach. I also hate the idea of digital only gaming. The new OnLive console freaks me out. It might be materialistic, but where will our collections be in the future? I don't like the idea of relying on a couple of hard drives to hold my collection. Servers will be shut down, you have nothing to sell / trade etc etc...

  • @NigzThaBoss

Nothing is guaranteed and nothing is recession proof so its just a recipe for disaster if everything goes 100% digital, interesting to see how consumer rights would play out if it ever happens!

  • I completely agree, theres something about walking into the store, looking for the game and getting and Actual disc. i like having an actual copy of the game i want. i do not want a Download of the game. Manuels and the art work for games is another one of the best parts of getting a game.

  • @ThyGamerJ

I know, I honestly believe the day we can no longer walk into a store we have lost a special part of the gaming process forever!

  • The day when I cant get a physical copy of a game. I will 100% refuse to buy new games. I will find ways to pirate things I would never think of pirating. Because at least with a physical copy is an investment in something I can use with in 25 years from now. With a digital copy if the servers go down and i need to download it again too bad... Look at all your original xbox content you downloaded... It dont matter you cant get that back lost investment. screw the direction the industry is taking

  • @TheHollowBlade

I'm onboard with that, the day it happens is the day I will fully throw myself into Retro 100%

  • Oh and as for the DLC 'already being on the CD' - Yeah, I totally see your point & how it's yet another example of corporate greed. I appreciate that and it sits uncomfortably with me but I guess i'm a little blasé towards that as I don't purchase a lot of DLC.

Thanks for the kind words though Dave and the response.....believe it or not i've got a 'Christmas memory' response vid coming up in a couple of days!

Back AND front page news, Alex finally does a response to his old mate Lawnboy! :)

  • Great response Dave, I guess my 'am I too old for current-gen' games was kind of rhetorical but also aimed more at the online perspective which has been claimed by a generally immature audience. I'll say again that i'm a fan of modern games but my point was that i'm nigh on certain that the NEXT-gen is something that i'll probably voluntarily skip for the reasons we all (Pete included) listed.

  • @bluetonic78 I think i'm confusing my rhetorical's with my Devil's Advocate's, you know!

  • @bluetonic78

I agree Alex I'm not sure I'm onboard with the next gen cos the way I see it, the more of us who embrace it the more we hold dear about previous gens will continue to be chipped away by the game comopanies!

  • Yeah and obviously when it becomes all digital there will be no shave on the price tag even though they are not making any packaging for the game and there is no disk at all!!! I can't take it when they try to squeeze you dry by lying to you. After watching Snestastic videos and all that i have become highly pro piracy for this gen! The companies wanna screw us over so they can fuck themselves! Plus piracy dropped the price of CDs for music.

  • @TheUnbiasedGamer

Thats the most annoying thing, the price will if anything just keep going up while the contents drops.

  • awesome vid. agree with pretty much all of it.

id say there is finally hope for the future in the shape of independent devs, IF the success of minecraft spreads. there you have an amazing idea, developed by a single person, that has the capacity to inspire a whole new direction for games.. true sandboxing..

i havnt even played it yet, but just watchin the lets plays its clear how much potential is there.

and if indi games do take off like that, it will force big companies to shape up

  • @shenmueso

You know one of my highlights last year was managing to pick up a copy of Pier Solar and that was a breath of fresh air. An indi game megadrive game that ticked all the boxes!
