I WAS THERE IN 1979 IN THE FRENCH SECTOR AT BRENAUER STRASSE. I MADE PHOTOS OF THE SOLDIERS IN WATCHTOWER THERE. THE OUTER FACADE OF THE APARTMENTS THAT ESCAPES WERE MADE FROM IN THE 1960S WERE STILL THERE.
The easiest way to the Checkpoint Charlie is to take the U6 line and get off at Kochstraße. Head out the Kochstraße exit and just cross the street and your there.
To get the Berlin Wall Memorial take the U8 line to Bernauer Strasse go up the stares at the Bernauer Str. Exit. and take a LEFT! There is a sign that says "Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer" Walk about 550 meters or 600 yards and your there! Or take the S1 ,S2 S25 line to Nordbanhhof are your right there!
i spoke to an east german man in munich at oktoberfest.he told me that it was easier to get work in the east and a lot of the east germans found it difficult after the fall of the wall.PLEASE RESPOND thank you.
Definitely such a system was totally wrong, seeking to literally imprison its "citizens" within its boundaries: so therefore the fall of the Wall as much the end of the SED regime are changes that must have been welcomed of course, but I think one big mistake has been made at the age i.e. Reuniting Germany at once, without not even a year elapsed in between. This led the German government to keep a severe burden of huge debts produced by the DDR basically to keep itself alive at Moscow's shadow
Certainly Germany had the total right to reunite and I don't blame that step having been took, but having let the process to take place more gradually I think would have really eased the way to Bonn to avoid the great unenmployment crises it faced during the whole nineties. Anyway NO WALLS IN OUR WORLD!!! Stop the Israeli wall!!!
i have read many comments about these videos, and many opinions are in conflict and that's interesting!...
well i would like to add that the worst thing (in my simple point of view) about the wall of Berlin, was that, a brother had to kill a brother. a German to kill a German, because he was told so...
Hagen Koch is as guilty as a death camp guard. He was a willing kog in the machinery of death, and is proud of it. Germany's failure to execute the death merchants who were necessary for the survival of the communist regime in the east is the sin that has brought the muslim invasion on them. Weakness in dealing with one group of murderers has made them a soft target for another group of murderers. One cannot justify their failure to carry out justice with nonsense like "reconciliation".
If that is what it was, then LONG LIVE IMPERIALIST SABOTAGE. Would you fight to defend the right of the DDR to shoot people trying to escape? If so, then you should be ashamed of yourself.
Tbh I think it's a miracle that after over 55 years of dictated rule from the Nazis and Moscow that the East Germans didn't just kill themselves in their millions. Not that I'm excusing their actions and I believe in the position that Nazi Germany was a police state run by the fear and prejudices of its people. But for such a people, sheltered from free press for half a lifetime, this must've took a psychological toll on the people involved. Such tragedies should never be repeated again.
they should have waited the wall came down in the 80s

@slyrader1
The problem is they didn't have the benefit of hindsight and so the people who escaped obviously couldn't know if/when the wall would come down.
Very sad how many died

Why would a border guard utter "thank God" for any reason? They were officially atheist were they not?

'NBC Tv financed the tunnels' - says it all. Imperialist sabotage of another state's border, that's what that was.

Those border guards are criminals in my eyes. Noone was forced to serve in the border guards and they knew that the escapees where innnocent.
