@Easleytee Tony's actually my favorite drummer. If he was still alive, he'd tell you Max was one of his major influences. He'd also tell you Bill covers this Max composition brilliantly. Buy a clue.
@Easleytee Oh, I'm sure Tony likes Max Roach. But I'll gladly place the tonal majesty of 60's of _either_ before the production of this. Bill is on point here, and truly contributes, but I'll take the sound of the OG over this for sure... as far as whatever contest you imagine, my friend, I will only comment: apples and oranges. :)
@futilityroom I don't think Bill was going for soul, nor would he want to compete with Max in that arena. He goes for insane time signatures and a sort of progressive genius thing.
@futilityroom Well to me Roach was always a cerebral drummer. Elvin, Blakey, Krupa, had soul but Max was more of a thought drummer as is Bruford. You should check out a drum battle between Max, Elvin, and Blakey where what I just said is pretty apparent but then it's all really opinion right?
@futilityroom Max did have more soul yes, but I still love the tight mathematical approach Bill takes. Bills version takes more discipline to play since the "boom-chick" is being played by a sequencer; there is no room for error. Bill was all about control and discipline. I think this drum solo is one of the greatest ever recorded, it is simply awesome. Soloing like this over top a 3/4 waltz is not easy.
Listen to Tony Williams solo. Then bury this nonsense at sea.
