Great Band. A friend of mine played me an album of theirs once with an elephant on the cover and a tune with french lyrics about giant hamster in nyc. anyone know the name?
anyone know if there is a recording out there of "aquatennial _____" I forgot if that was the name of the song or if I am confusing that with they story behind the song. I've seen then twice at the AQ and I heard it both times 2007 and 2008 i think? Does anyone know of the song I am talking about?
Lewis' slurring and micro-harmonics are very hip. If you get a chance to hear some of their recordings, listen for the breath. This band makes you listen. Sometimes you have to listen repeatedly like a Captain Beefheart album. So much going on at once which is a good thing.
Happy Apple is an amazing band, especially to see live - so much raw energy. Dave King has to be the funniest drummer, maybe, ever. And the music is out of this world. Excellent
Michael Lewis is by far my favorite player on the scene right now. When I was a music major in college this was the tone I was going for, but never quite managed it. His solo on "It will Be" on Youth Oriented is one of the most beautifull Sax solos ever recorded. IMO!
Nice video, These guys have a new CD coming out, the Release party at the Artists' Quarter in Saint Paul is on Friday, August 31 - Sunday September 2. cover is $12.
From the Artaists' Quarter website: Entering the second decade of their melodic-yet-quixotic (in a good way) musical journey, the Apples weld rock dynamics and aural humor to their space probe of inter-stellar jazz grooves.
One of the most interesting things is how versatile he is, yet you can still tell it's King whether it is Happy Apple, The Bad Plus, Halloween Alaska... whatever.
Thank you for posting this!!! I have seen Happy Apple twice at the AQ, and I can't get enough. This video barely scratches the surface of the collective creative genius of King, Fratzke and Lewis. You really have to see them live to begin to wrap your mind around it. You might leave more confused than you went in, or you might have an epiphany during second set, but for sure you will be flattened with awe and speechless for weeks.

My favourite track of theirs.
Its such a beautiful solo. It takes you through Lewis's most intense Ups and Downs... It's brilliant
