  • I have to download this!!!

    Just kidding! =)

  • actually, it's "stolen" from The IT Crowd (great series btw) S02E03 - Moss and the German

  • television was not the end of cinema or theatre

would downloading be the end of music, film and game industries?

  • Except that they choose to be on television and are paid through the advertising. So while it's a much nicer form of theft, it still sort of is. Depending.

  • Also, when you buy a software or movie i like to believe that i own the movie right? So if i choose to share it with other people, they aren't stealing? I am sharing what i own...

The word stealing is the wrong word for it.

A better way of saying it is: Not giving your money to the asshole companies who want it.

  • You can share, but they're not owning it. If you duplicate and GIVE it to them, they ARE owning it. Two people can own one item, but one person is NOT allowed to replicate an item to create two identical items, which is what Filesharing is.

And here's the fix: "Not giving your money to the asshole companies who OWN it."

    Learn to law.

  • "Making a copy" reduces the value of the original.

    Reducing value = siphoning money.

    Siphoning money = stealing.

    Making a copy = stealing.

You CAN own information; hell, you CAN own the air. You keep it in a restrictive area and forbid anyone to be near it.

If I can't own information, can I have your credit card info, and your car insurance while you're at it? Give me your wedding license, too.

Sweet, I just gained a credit card, a car, and a wife. And it's apparently not illegal.

  • Making a copy does not reduce the value of the original. In some cases like the more people who use it, the more valuable it becomes because it's more supported.

Ok, if I can own the air as you say, I declare ownership of all Air. Pay me money so you can use it. Why don't you pay me money? The Air is mine!

Your confusing identity theft (depriving a person of wealth) with (making a copy).

You are perfectly welcome to make copies of my credit card systems and setup your own accounts to use.

  • 1. Because people PAY FOR IT.

    2. Show me your deed to the Air from the US government (you ARE in their airspace afterall). If you don't want me using it, section it off so I can't use it accidentally.

    3. BUT IT'S NOT THEFT APPARENTLY SO GIVE ME THE INFORMATION

Making a copy DOES deprive someone of wealth SINCE YOU'RE NOT PAYING FOR THE COPY THAT LEGAL RIGHTS TELL YOU TO PAY THEM FOR.

  • Your confusing 'theft of wealth' with 'making a copy' again. Your claim is that copying=stealing and that is wrong. You assume that I would pay huge money for music/movies/software. I am not going to shell out thousands to listen to music, watch a movie, and use software. I am not depriving anybody of income in the copying.

PLUS I add value to their music/movie/software, because I am a living advertisement.

Just because a copy has occurred does not automatically mean a theft occurred.

  • "I am not going to shell out thousands to listen to music, watch a movie, and use software."

Well then the law says YOU DON'T GET TO LISTEN, WATCH, OR USE THEM, NATCH.

  • And thus you have confirmed my whole point, if I have not deprived anybody of an income stream, the act of copying is not an act of theft.

I hope I have added another color to your simple world of black and white.

  • Still a violation of copyright, cho.

We're not a communal, "ownership" is set in stone.

  • Suppose I copyright the circular wheel and axel, now you have to pay me money every time you use a wheel and axle which is probably every moment of your existence.

Notice how even if I did, I wouldn't get money, why is that? Even though I "Own" wheel and axle, I don't get money for it, how is that? How can people be stealing my wheel/axle invention and yet I am not paid?

Use your black/white view of ownership to answer that one.

  • 1. You'd never get a copyright on that. International and public property exists too.

    2. If you did, you would. But the only problem is, you can't.

Done. Some things count as "everyone owns", some things count as "I own and you do not own".

  • Brilliant deduction, your notion of "everyone owns" has entered your consciousness.

I like this idea of how everyone owns the wheel and axle. I wish we could use this concept of "everyone owns" to other things, like software. Software can be as useful to everyone as the wheel and axle is for you.

  • Why would one give something one made to everyone and get nothing in return?

Humanity is greedy. Get over it.

  • Stealing is removing the original.

Making a copy does not remove the original so copying movies is not stealing.

    Checkmate.

And for those of you saying that copying movies deprives the creator of profit, I am not going to shell out thousands of dollars to see movies every week for a year.

So if you make downloading illegal and setup government spies on your internet connection, it does not result in money coming into MPAA and RIAA pockets.

  • So... plagiarism and copying artworks is perfectly fine?

    Learn to Artistic License, buddy.

  • The reason mankind has advanced so much in this last 100 years is because collaboration and knowledge sharing has become VERY easy.

When you start saying things like this:

    "This jpg is mine"

    "That movie is mine"

    "This book is mine"

And you can't use it without permission

Then what happens is you put a huge damper on progress.

The freedom to tinker my God given unalienable right. The Nazi's trying to establish ownership of information are trying to freeze mankind's progress in it's tracks.

  • Hello death of the artist industry.

No, it ISN'T your right, as YOU DID NOT CREATE IT. This is why we have LAWS. Going by your own laws, you can steal anyone's food so long as you like it.

You don't quite understand how civilization works, do you?

"You can't use it without my permission BECAUSE I FUCKING OWN IT."

    Oh, and hello Godwin's Law.

  • You said "I can't steal anyone's food if I like it".

Correct, stealing is wrong, piracy is not stealing because it does not remove the original.

    Stealing = removing the original

File sharing = making a copy.

You don't own information, that's like trying to own the air.

Oh by the way, You can't use wheels anymore because oog the caveman did not give you permission to use it.

Oh, but I hear you say: "That's different".

  • HAHAA I LOL'd

  • LOL This is awesome.

I agree with sethsevaroth. I usually only like one or two songs on a CD, I'm not going to pay $15 or more for something I won't get my money's worth out of.

  • i bet you take it up the ass

  • YOU WOULDN'T DOWNLOAD A CAR

  • @Larz9220 Then you would'nt steal a movie !

  • they should do more public annoucements like this

  • No but if I had a magical machine that could make an exact duplicate of the car and then we'd each have a car than we would each benefit.

stealing implies taking something without paying.

if you steal a car; then that lil old lady no longer has her car.

if i make a copy of her cd; we both can enjoy it.

If all CD's and DVD's were $5's each I wouldn't have a problem at all. But to spend 25 dollars on something I'm not even sure I'll even like is absurd.

I wonder who's stealing from who?

  • Well said.

  • Omg I downloaded 20000 films that mens i get 20000 bullets in me.

  • That's a lot of movies..

  • and then steal it again

  • "You wouldn't shoot a policeman... and then take

    his hat!"

    Priceless.

  • what music is that?

  • The MPAA would love to do that.

The FBI and other government forces shouldn't be going after private individuals.

I don't mind them nailing those chinese idiots SELLING pirated movies... but certainly nobody just downloading.
