"Come to the bookstore with me!" "NAAAAAH!!! I know we could spend some time together talking, get a coffee, look through the stacks, talk about some of the other books, get to know each other more on the way home, and then sit on the porch together and quietly read, but I can cut all that other boring, waste of time crap and just skip right to the reading."
‘Most of the luxuries, and many of the so-called comforts of life, are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.” - Henry David Thoreau
@Austaur I live in a small town so I agree with you. I'm getting a Kindle 4 for Christmas and am looking forward to not having to road trip an hour away for cheap books. I still fully support bookstores but for people like me, the ease of buying a book on Kindle just seems so much easier! :)
is it necessary to diss bookstores? its because of technology like this, people are losing jobs, not making more jobs. a lot of people are involved in making one book, which is what keeps people working. with something like this, it is no wonder places like borders are closing. we are losing the art of reading a BOOK
Hey, if you actually want to get a hot chic, go outside and maybe actually go where people are at, like you local bookstore.Trashing bookstores? Where real people work and support their families. Never buying a farking kindle because of this commercial.
Yeah, okay, y'all need to chill out. Bookstores won't go out of business. Wanna know why? 'Cause there are people (like, say, pretty much everyone here) who actually WANT hardcopies of books. So please stop hating on the ebook, and please don't hate on those who already have one. It's called a preference.
The only thing I like about Kindles are the fact that they save trees. And I have to admit, that is a big bonus, despite the fact that I love sitting down with a good book.
I shall NEVER buy a Kindle! I hate Kindle and Nook! Give me normal books any day! I am so terrified these days that Barnes and Noble will go out of business one day and I'll be out of luck of looking through books, talking to people about books, smelling the smell of new books and previously used books and how fresh the paper smells....ok I'm weird. Anyway, I LOVE the bookstore and how nice they are. People say "socialize" then they come out with these things that make people "isolate" others
@LightDarkQueenSophia Maybe if you want to socialize you should get out and do somthing productive instead of reading books and hanging around bookstores with all the other do nothings.
@Ironbumm I socialize when I go out for errands I just don't download books on a battery powered screen. I have my own socializing and it's worked for me. Talking on phone, driving to friends to hang out, walk around stores to see what they have even if I can't get it. I will always support paper printed books in and out of school/work/life -nods- now if can't get/afford normal books then a Kindle is fine if you want but it just not for me as I love books printed on paper
These stupid Kindle commercials annoy me almost as much as the 'Pomplamoose' Volkswagon commercials did last year. Some commercials are priceless but few and far between...and this ain't one of them! On another note, am I the only one that thinks he looks like Woody from 'Toy Story?' And WTF is up with this bitches's eyes?!? They're so HUGE they're scary!
The essential message of this commercial is, "Going to the store is a waste of time and a major hassle. Never mind all that old fashioned stuff about going to the store, browsing through books, maybe talking to another human being or two, handing cash to someone, and then anticipating when you'll get home and can begin reading. Delayed gratification is for suckers!"
@GBev2K Of course the e-book version is often a fraction of the price. Oh, and writers like me are likely getting roughly 7 times the money in royalties from Amazon that they would from a book in a book store, making it more likely that they'll be able to support themselves by continuing to write a new book. And that the environmental impact of e-books is considerably less than traditional printing methods. The Kindle is the best thing to happen to this industry in a good long while.
@jjreinem IIt might be good for "the industry" but as a society we lose something more valuable than what we gain. From the writer and industry perspective the e-book might be nice. But from the perspective of someone who enjoys the full leisurely experience of interacting with other people, browsing, buying and holding a real book, e-readers are a detriment to society. And using the environment as an excuse is getting old.
@GBev2K I won't lie that we are losing that experience. And believe it or not, I'm quite fond of it myself. But it's not the fault of e-readers. There are just too few people in the general population who read for entertainment and too many books to choose from for the traditional bookstore to be a viable business practice anymore. And you can't expect everyone who depends on that to eat to cheerfully go bankrupt for a luxury we can no longer afford.
@jjreinem Well, I own a Kindle and I have used it for free or hard to find expired copyright books. I've never purchased a book for it. If I need a book for a class I always buy the physical books because I find them easier to manage for research, notes, and class discussions. (I see very few e-readers in class btw.) I don't HATE e-readers and welcome them, it's this condescending marketing tactic in this ad that bugs me. "Convenience is better you dummy!"
@jjreinem ...now, I'm not saying there isn't a place for e-readers, but this ad and most like it seem to suggest that what my original comment says. Buy an e-reader because you're smarter if you do. You won't be wasting time driving (or walking) to the bookstore. You can bypass all that face to face social crap and just start reading.
"I'm good, I'd rather not patronize hard-working, family-owned bookstores. It takes less than 60 seconds to download books on my Kindle and put them out of business."
"60 seconds! wow! I can save 20 minutes AND not have to have a PERSON sell me books."
"weren't you going to give your business to an independent bookstore?"
@jbw612 And yet you're using a computer which I'm sure you have music on it that was either downloaded from the web so you can avoid patronizing your local CD store. LOL. Don't lie.
@jbw612 Then you just contradicted yourself about the ad. There are books that can be found in digital form that are not always found at your local bookstore so YOU DON'T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS that just because people with a kindle will buy a book digitally that they would never buy a physical book from an independent store. Funny you. Would you like a glass of water to wash down your foot?
@macuser5555 I did not necessarily contradict myself. You're right, there are people who use ebooks when they can't find a specific in local bookstores. in that case, it would make sense. But the woman in the commercial uses the kindle INSTEAD of trying to find it in a bookstore. That is not making an assumption, because that is very, very clear from the commercial. that is what I disapprove of, not the use of ebooks in general.
@jbw612 Okay, fair enough, your point is well accepted. I will say this, you'll have to get used to it because unless you're age 95 or approaching the graveyard soon as your permanent resting place the digital age is taking over and it's not the responsibility of the customer to keep brick n mortar stores open. Everything is changing to digital. Blame that on society, not the individual customer.
@jbw612 After going back and looking at this ad again, I will say I stand corrected on some account here. I was telling you earlier to blame society and not the individual customer for preferring digital distribution over brick n mortar stores, but sadly this ad *IS* society at it's best. I hadn't thought about it but yes, Amazon is telling people to avoid brick n mortar stores in favor of the "easy" way. Oh well. As I said, the digital age has taken over.
@jbw612 Lot of hard work going on at the bookstore is there ? You must be a liberal fruitloop that never worked hard in your life. She was probably going to a Barnes & Noble that is of course owned by good old Mom & Pop.

Though there's no changing the minds of vicious youtube commentary, I just want to point out a few things:
1. Think of the people in small towns where the nearest bookstore is a 45 minute drive
2. Some people just don't want to go all the way to a bookstore when they know exactly the book they have in mind
3. Mom and Pop bookstores aren't as common as you think.
4. Just because you order books online with the Kindle doesn't mean there aren't jobs there.
Stop with these melodramatic comments.
