Gi chokes are beautiful, it's all about the carotid arteries. You should think less about the actual grip and focus on where the blade of your forearm lines up against his carotid. You position yourself there and grab wherever it allows you to keep your forearm in place. There are many different ways to finish the choke once you're there including this method, crunching inward, lifting the chin, etc. Opening up or "feeding" the collar with the other hand will allow you to get a deeper grip.
That's pretty neat. When I studied for my black belt in Judo I was taught similar techniques for arms and other pressure points for major arteries before executing a throw. I've seen a jujitsu choke like that done in a few variations and you can even mix it with other techniques like rear naked chokes or arm bars. There's a lot of ways you can use your opponents attire against them.
wow. he just dropped a gem on us. i hate gi chokes because i only ever barely get them. and yes, that's because i pretty much suck.... but im getting better
yeah im a small boy and i train with huge guys and when they get the mount i know this choke is comming but 70% of the time i cant prevent it and the other 30% they go str8 into an armbar if the choke fails, but im good at preventing armbars so its all good haha i cant wait 2 try this on them
i was do this were i practise and a guy who is really stubron wont tap out to it and he was turning purple and im like daniel tap then my instructer came over and saw him and was like daniel you should tap and he still wont tap then after like 10 seconds you could tell he was fading and he just like let him go and it was using this choke.
we just worked this choked last week. nice variation. I ill share it with the guys and try it out as soon as i get the chance. Of course I won't share it until I tap a few of them with it tho ;).
Thanks - i'll have to try this one out. Just wondering what the advantage is doing the cross choke from mount in this way. Superficially, it seems that your centre of mass is a bit higher here than when you do a orthodox cross choke with your head forward on the matt, and as such you are not as stable. What do people think? It seems you only need your thumb in with the second hand so may be easier to get.
number one rule in fighting, protect your hands and yourself @ all times. GNP is effective in a cage or ring. But you will cause damage to your hands. I love to bang but i would rather just tap a dude out. Remember everything takes practice. So does GNP.lol. In a ring or cage pro's ware hand wraps and gloves. To protect there hands. In a street fight ht a guy on the top of the head or forehaed by mistake and watch those knuckles swell, then ur out the gym for a 2 weeks or more.
Submissions in a street fight? Seriously? Also, the real number one rule in fighting would be to win. I'd rather hurt the other guy than him hurt me. You don't need to kill the guy to win lol, the punches don't need to have that much power behind them. GnP from mount in a street fight is much more practical than a submission.
partner im not trying to argue, and its not about winning. its about not hurting anyone. thats a true martial artist. and i agree controlling the power of your punches is the key. But again id rather choke the guy out. and use less energy. trust me bro i have street fought since 13 now im 25 and im pro. gnp is practical i agree. but street fighting is dangerous id rather avoid it now. but if i had no choice but to defend myself id rather choke the guy out. no harm to me or him. then i walk away
Have to agree with Drmassone on this one. Would much rather end a fight in 10 seconds then have to ground and pound them for 30(if the are shielding themselves.) Either way I was to be on the ground for as little time as possible. Longer I am in mount, longer his friends have to come jump my ass.
and a cross choke is very effective against popped Collar Douchebags... Can put one to sleep in about 6 seconds. Do that and all his little mincey faggot ball(snatch) friends won't fuck with you.
Slap them in the cheeks open palmed to bait them to turn to their back. Mate leo , or Choke them with a rear naked choke at that point. Save your knuckles!
I was asking coz im an avid rugby player and do muay thai so i realised that if i did my knuckles in then i would be out for a wee while.
I think the best options would be slap, let him turn his back and then choke him.
However, elbows is quite a good idea coz it would open him up, dropping his morale and making him less confident, and would pack the same amount of power as a punch.
Before gloves were introduced to boxing and prize fighting no one punched to the head. Too easy to break the knuckles. It's alright standing but on the ground you can strike with your open palm to the head and your fists the body.
Nice, but how to do you counter the technique? What should Jerimiah have done at the point your right arm locked, grabbed his collar with your fist to counter the twist? Thanks.
Good question...this one comes on fast so you hafta move. Notice how Jeremiah instinctively isolated the first hand and cupped the elbow preparing for an upa. I think that would be the first attempt. Next, go left hand to right hand, bury your chin, stiff arm at the belt-line then a huge exaggerated shrimp to the right and try to get your knees in and start replacing guard. Still a long shot but ya gotta try something!
What YOU should do when someone is going for a collar choke and they are leaning off to the side is to swivel yourself under them, to get their center of balance directly over you so you can upa them off. Swivel under and upa.
would this work from guard????

@JiujitsuZac99 it can but you would use too much strength and open your self up for a sweep

Great technique, I'm from Brazil and must say that not too many people expect to be choked like that... it's a great technique to be used.
