My movie viewing experience must be very sparse. Outside of Die Hard, I have great difficulty in readily recalling films featuring Alan Rickman. I've never considered him to be a handsome man, although that view may be biased by the few dark characters I've known him to play. That, in it self, could be considered a testament to his skill in portraying those characters.
I've loved Snape ever since I finished Deathly Hallows. Alan Rickman definately adds to the character's appeal but he isn't the reason I like the character.
and neville, all of a sudden everyone loves neville too.....>.>
i was never a huge neville fan tho, so it doesnt piss me off as much though i do wish they'd showed his grandma in the last movie.....i love that she's finally proud of him ^_^
It wasn't ~necessary~ but I was upset at the lack of Grindelwald as well. For selfish reasons.
I don't really care for Snape. But I love Alan Rickman. He did brilliantly. And the younger Snape was adorable (I loved all the child actors).
As a Catholic, I'm all for sacrificial love, but I agree that his actions are done in vain. Kind of his way of proving to himself that he had one up on James. But I didn't like James either.
The only thing Snape stood for, was Lily. He's a parasite.
@hellolover99 Haha yeah, I'll admit my hope for more Grindelwald was also for selfish reasons. Good way of putting it.
It's interesting that so many people don't like James. JK really kind of kicked his character to the ground at one point (5th book) and never really let him redeem himself. A shame. Ah well, that's the beauty of flawed characters.
Snape makes me rethink the way I view people. He was so multi-dementional that whenever someone is mean to me I now try to think outside of myself and figure out why they are being mean to me.
@peculiarpixie Ah, the power of flawed characters! :) It's so amazing how just one little twist to his character enabled us rethink the entirety of the plot of the series as a whole.
@Nsnick88 I know what you mean. I strongly disliked Severus until I read Deathly Hallows. After viewing his memories my entire perception of the character changed. The Harry Potter Series and the book Paper Towns (and just books in general!) really make me wish I could get into people's heads so I can better relate to them and actually understand their motivations. I feel like Snape was such a tragic character because he could have overcome the obsticles in his life and didn't.
Yes. Alan Rickman. Love. That said, as much as I love Alan Rickman and his excellent portrayal of Snape, he's really not how I see Snape in my head when I read the books On one level I find it easier to sympathize with book Snape. I'm not sure why.
I would definitely say that he is one of the best characters in the series, though. His conflict and dedication to Lily are far more interesting than Harry's angst.
My complaint with the movie? NOT ENOUGH INVISIBILITY CLOAK.
@KatieAtLarge DEFINITELY NOT ENOUGH INVISIBILITY CLOAK.
It's interesting to see how people have been reacting differently to book!Snape versus film!Snape now. When I first saw Alan in the role, I was very pleased with how close he was to the image in my head. In any case, he FELT like Snape. (Though according to the GrandPre illustrations, he should have had more facial hair! haha) Though, of course, book!Snape will always be infinitely more complex in terms of character/literary detail.
I didn't really even dislike Snape back in his I'm-a-2D-horrible-teacher days - it's probably bad that I was more 'oh Harry stop whining' than anti-Snape back in the day. :B So I warmed up to him quite easily as his whole backstory slowly emerged.
I don't really like James, either! It's a bit odd that we have all his old school friends saying how great he was, and then one memory scene from Snape's POV kicks him out of the limelight. He doesn't really get a chance to redeem himself, I guess.
@marillbuddy Yes, James is pretty interesting (also, underused) in that respect. I often wonder why J.K. chose to reveal so little about him. Then again, it could have been simply because this was HARRY'S story to tell, and not James's. I've always loved the marauders though, so I was disappointed to not learn more about them. But when it comes to James, I get the feeling J.K. wanted to introduce him as a character who, though loved in memory, was also greatly flawed like any other human being.
sacrificial death. But those are really my only complaints. And they are quite minor. I was completely fine and not surprised with the lack of Grindelwald and Dumbledore backstory. I felt like you got the gist of the animosity between Aberforth and Albus. And a viewer could infer that Albus was most likely a power hungry youth. And Snape is an amazing character. I disagree that we should condemn him for merely being human. Everything anyone does is based on selfishness, really....
@Thestralsxxx You're right, these movies have always had an air of cheesiness at times! xD Sometimes my brother and I like to point them out and laugh, and then proceed to interpret how the scenes could have been made even sillier... "I love magic!" *facepalm*
But yes, I do appreciate Snape as a flawed character. The best characters always are!
Overall, like you said, it was a good, imperfect ending to an imperfect film series. It told the story well, apart from many nuances. Some of the comedy was very annoying, some of the scenes were over dramatic and extremely cheesy. (But hey, Harry Potter has always been super cheesy [CoS ending...]). 1. Luna and Neville are NOT a thing! Ok, sorry, 2. Neville killing Nagini...eh...no so spectacular 3. final Harry killing Voldemort was weird. 4. I wish they explained the whole Harry's love and...
I think Snape is a fascinating character. I don't think he's an amazing person--I do think he's somewhat selfish and really needs to get over his grudge against James because Harry is NOT James. (I've always thought James was a huge asshole.) Of course, Snape is not a saint. But he's an interesting character--he's very complex, and that's why I like him.
Also, Alan Rickman. ALAN FUCKING RICKMAN.
(do you read hyperbole and a half? ALL THE THINGS)
@Nsnick88 It's a blog. It can be found at hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com. It's hilarious--she writes stories about things that happen in her life and illustrates them with pictures. It's one of the funniest blogs I've ever read and makes me laugh out loud A LOT. The picture you had with "Alan Rickman for ALL THE THINGS" reminded me of it--it's a similar style illustration and ALL THE THINGS is a thing in one of her blog entries.
...But when I read his story for the first time in the 7th book, I couldn't help falling in love with him like everyone else has done. It's a beautiful tragedy to experience a character like that. Not knowing how much he really meant to the stories until after it's over, it's like realizing you've been missing out on something great. You can't help but take your love for him to the extreme, which is what everyone is doing now that they've seen the films ("ALAN RICKMAN FOR BEST EVERYTHING!" hah).
@dollhouseAli You always leave the best comments! <3
I do understand where you're coming from, very much so. I actually took a greater dislike to characters such as book!Draco and Umbridge (in general) than Snape. Film!Snape is much more palatable, most certainly in the way he is presented and portrayed. His overall story arch is a beautiful surprise that I, along with everyone else, will always adore. It's just so funny to be seeing it played out by fans all over the internet! SO entertaining!
"He's really kind of sexy!! ...I mean... okay! *hand/head* xD You're not alone in this thought!
I've always liked Snape in a weird way. When I was younger, I didn't hate him like Harry always did, but when they introduced his character in the films, there was something about him that was so deliciously, well, evil, that made me appreciate his character much more in the books. I actually think I do like film!Snape better than book!Snape, thanks to Alan Rickman. (...Continued!!!)
Alan rickman is VERY sexy! but the reason why i love him is because of Snape idk why I just really really love Snape.
