I think I have shin splints, and I haven't really gotten a break because I have gym and I have to run in there. I don't know if it will ever get better, really.. :(
@sportsinjuryclinic I've tried stretching and massaging it. It seems fine for now, but as soon as I run on it, I know its going to hurt.. I might be going to the doctors tomorrow though. :)

@Abduls100 You do need to rest completely from any activities which cause you pain. Have you had any professional treatment? This would really help - massage etc. What about taping the shin?
@sportsinjuryclinic yeah man i had professional treatment and they sai that i just need to rest ..... when i reste the went away but as soon as i start even running it comes back again, not because of any particular game or sport its just due to running!!! i have to get fit fast because of a season coming for which i am getting emplyed by a department and the money is good and its going to be my firt professional 1st class tournment. i've done almost all things except for exercising...
Im a WR and i plan on going to football practice as much as i can until the pain worsens and i am no longer able to play. I would hate to miss this football season because of shinsplints....FIGHT THE POWER!
Hey is it possible to get shin splint in the same place ?Last year i had to retire for 1 month and it healed but now after one year it started to cause me pain again. Is it possible?
@SapiaSaura Yes definitely. Repeat the treatments you did last year to ease it. However there must be an underlying factor which you did not correct from last time which has lead to it returning
@nicksantana93 You may have to have some time out from training. Either that or carry on and it will get worse and worse until you can't train at all and then you will need even longer out!
@nicksantana93 When I was in crosscountry I had serious shin splints. The trainer at my high school would wrap my arches every day before running and I never had pain while running. He then used ice cups to deep tissue massage the splints after practice. Worked well.
thanks alot. im on my highschool football team and im a halfback and i get bad shinsplints during our conditioning. i usually feel the afterefftect more then the during running. this is starting to work. thanks alot
@sunnysummerheaven rest is the only option initially. Tne longer you keep running the worse it will get and the longer it will take to heal in the long term.
Rest, stretch, massage, look at running shoes and gait etc and when pain-free start a very gradual return to running!
@Mathemagician95 Make sure you have the right arch support and cushioning. Stretch your calf muscles. Get some sports massage to the calf and shin muscle. Ice the shin. Rest from activity for a couple of weeks. Try a taping technique on the lower leg, Try a calf/shin support. There are so many options!
@futuresunset77sky Yes you can do that but the tape may not stick as well. You might be better to leave it a while after icing to make sure that the skin is completely dry and the skin has had a chance to warm again as the glues in the tape work better when warmed.
So..I train every morning with Marines because I go to boot camp soon, I can't afford to rest because I need to stay in shape before I get shipped off...
Both of my legs have shin splints and I massage them daily with no relief. The pain doesn't start until I start running, then it fades in and out...
@Rico21R You need to work out what has caused the shin splints. You may need more cushioning footwear, or you may need arch supports. You should get an assessment at a specialist running shop. Tight calf muscles is also a massive cause of shin splints so this should be addressed.
@Rico21R hahah me too i leave in 20 days.. i started running 3 miles everyday n i started feeling pain in my shin... u need to rest. dont go to boot camp hurt...
Recently had back surgery and put alot of weight back on ( my mistake lol) but just started back slow, jogging and jumping rope and 2day had really bad shin pain and iced it seems ok now! Any suggestions??? Thnx again
@Stugots666x Try lower impact work until you have lost some of the weight you put on? Make sure you have the right running shoes and stretch your calf muscles lots!
Thank u so much 4 posting this info it's been helpfull.. I used to b really overweight, lost 100 lbs by running, diet, and all types of cardio, had the pain before I lost the weight one time, then when I got serious bout getting fit had no pain>>>>>
@FetishFantasies4U Shin strengthening exercises? You should avoid them initially until all pain has gone, but then simple exercises such as toe raises can be done as shown
So I was wondering if someone could help me out, I'm trying to figure out if I actually have shin splints. I go to the gym a lot and do a lot of strength training/ weightlifting and every now and then I'll get on the treadmill for some cardio. When I do so, I can't even run for more than three minutes without getting these knots that swell up on my shins and they ache really bad. There quarter size round bumps that swell up This only happens when I run and even when I walk long distances
@taf7895644 Unlikely shin splints. More likely a compartment syndrome type problem or muscle problem. Make sure you have the right running shoes and stretch your calf muscles lots
hi i am cricket player and i have got shin splints on my both legs and i started feeling this feel when i started using insole from boots and i used good one, what steps should i need to take to get rid of this pain please advise me.
@adeel7592 Follow the steps in the video. rest from aggravating activity, ice, calf stretching etc. If you are sure the insoles caused it, then remove them. You may need gait analysis to determine if you need insoles at all.
Ok I really need u help. I have been doin muay thai for a while and I'm getting pain In the back of my left shin one of my friends said it was shin splints but the video said that shin splints were in the front of the shin. What do you think it it. The pain has been there for a couple of weeks
@sasuke0447 What do you mean by the back of the shin? Do you mean the calf? Shin splints pain is located just to the inside of the shin bone at the front of the lower leg.
@sasuke0447 that sounds more like you pulled your muscle.it happens when you do a drastic movement without stretchin... funny thing ur sasuke0447 an im naruto lol so you left the akutsky
@Jiminibobster NO!!!! Astro trainers aren't ok for running. You MUST have proper running shoes to provide adequate support and cushioning. Make sure you get a gait analysis first so you get the right running shoes for your feet and running style.
@Jiminibobster depends on other factors. It is certainly common in new runners and especially those who start running too much too soon (generally you should have a rest day inbetween if you are new to it). Other things such as road surface, running shoes, foot type and flexibility all play a part too.
I heard that if you keep on hitting your shin, or any other body part that within time it your bone with become stronger, which in turn makes your bone less likely to get injured. Wolff's law seems as a possible treatment for splints doesn't it?
@Hellogoodbye90gm Unlikely! Shin splints has nothing to do with the strength of the bone. It is to do with the pull of the muscle and fascial attachments on it, so I don't think this is feasible!
ive had a pain in my shin, right underneath my knee for a long long time now is that bad its a type of paint that starts when i bend down to tie my shoe or run or when i put pressure on it with my fingers
@AnXxiieTyZz its unlikely shin splints as these are usually lower down the leg. The bit that hurts when you press it - is it directly on the bone or to one side? How old are you?
@AnXxiieTyZz SOunds more like Osgood Schlatters disease this cause pain on the shin bone high up nearer the knee. Often a bump will appear there as well. It occurs in people your age.
@joelhannan It depends on a number of factors. Saying how long isn't possible. You need tor est until it is painfree to walk and you also need to correct the causes of it which apply to your case.
i have had a strong pain when playing soccer in mainly the lower inside right leg just above the ankle, when walking or resting there is zero pain...is it shin splints? what shud i do to make it go away? it isnt a stress fracture is it? i have never had any problems like this before. it started stright after not streching before running for 20 min with new soccer boots on...please help
@kiwiana345 Is the pain just to the inside of the shin bone? Shin splints will usually come on during exercise, not whilst stretching beforehand. If the pain started when you were doing a stretch I think a muscle strain is more likely.
@sportsinjuryclinic it is not during stretching, just when im running or doing sports the pain comes-no pain from stretching. and yes the pain is in the lower shin just on the inside...
@kiwiana345 Ahh sorry missed the 'not' in the last sentence. Yes shin splints is possible. You need to find the cause of it in order to treat it effectively. Generally this is tight calf muscles and inadequate footwear.
@sportsinjuryclinic thanks for your replies, just wondering: it couldnt really be flat feet or the way i walk/run, because ive never ever had this before and i have been playing sports, etc for ages
@kiwiana345 Ok, but these things can get worse. The tightness in your lower leg muscles can contribute to more severe overpronation. Also if you have recnelty increased your training then this extra load may cause it to develop. Even if you have the wrong footwear this could be the cause.
i ve had shin splints on an off for as long as i can remember in both legs.. i ve rested an it jus comes bak...its starting to frustrate me...is there an ankle support i can use to stop being flat footed..
@ADILPROUD I've had the same problem as you for many years now. I bought some shin / Calf Supports. They do not get rid of the pain 100%, but GREATLY reduce the pain enough to were I can jog again. I recommend you try them to alleviate your shin spints
i have terrible shin splints in my left shin, today it was terrible does this mean i have to stop running for several months?? I dont want to stop running!
@ectomy1235 YES! You need to rest it! It's never going to heal if you don't. Follow the advice in the video about treatments, or even better, get yourself to a professional!
@ectomy1235 Reduce how much you run by 50 percent, Ice after running, and warm up and stretch before and after, running on grass barefeet helps some ppl. try it
@ectomy1235 you should sit out for 2 weeks and see how it heels up. I had to learn it the hard way (stretch fracture) which took me 6 months to recover.
@ectomy1235 i have the same problem, resting won't really help. My leg hurts like 4.5 years now, i had longer rest period and during that time it was ok but as soon as you start doing your sport activities again it gradually comes back. I also went on expensive therapies, iced my leg, done pretty much everything i could think off...
@sportsinjuryclinic You know what's the funny thing tho...my first problem was a hematoma that i had on my left calf...i had it for quite some time and it hurt like hell every time i jumped, but then i got some special insoles (i always wore insoles but those were for my flat feet). These new insoles made the pain in my calf go away, but in a few days i started developing shin pain. Maybe it's because of them? I don't know anymore...i also have lower back problems which might be related?
@MadPropzBaller Calf muscle tightness is cloely linked to shin splints. If you have had a haematoma in the calf the muscle is probabaly very tight. It seems ilke too much of a coincidence for them not to be linked. Try lots and lots of calf stretching and some sports massage too if you can
hello sportsinjuryclinic, I have been running very solidly for around 5 or a little more years, this year i have first encountered shin splints, it was initially in both shins, but now just the left shin, today i tried to run but the pain was too much so i had to stop, I run 3-5 times a week for up to 1:30.00 but im having so much trouble with my left shin, i really cant run for more than about 2 days in a row, i give it a rest for 5 days, but it returns after 3 days of running, what do i do??
I used to get shin splints when i ran anything over about 2 miles with any frequency--say more than once a week--so it was impossible to train for distance events like a 10k, etc. The only thing that saved me was getting RID OF the support, and letting my feet do the job they were meant to do.. I started with the vibram five fingers, now i'm doing a mix of 5 fingers/barefoot running. the difference has been so dramatic it's something you have to try to believe. just amazing!
Frik!. I love running.....and now I got shin splints!. I run 3 times a week and now I cant. I cant even snowboard this weekend!!!!!. My life is over!!
@cezza57 Get to treating it straight away and don't try to continue training on it. Give it the rest and attention it needs and it should improve quickly! Good luck!
@icebaby102345 Usually they are in the mid to lower part of the shin, but they could be higher up, as long as the pain is on the inside of the shin bone. Otherwise it would be something else.
hey there, i stoped doing exercise when i left school, and just started running again 2 years later and i have shin splints, could this be from be putting on weight? i also have flat feet but have never had a problem, and i have good running shoes and arch support
@CronicFiend Hi. It is probably a combination of starting up again, being heavier than before and the flat feet. Make sure you rest until pain free, ice and stretch stretch stretch! The calf muscles are actually the most important part to stretch. Get some massage too. Try to loose some weight by other methods (non-weight bearing - cycle etc) and make sure you definately have the right support in your shoes!
@CronicFiend As with all weight loss, its about burning more calories than you are taking in. But this needs to be done sensibly (no crash diets). Reduce your calorie intake slightly and up your exercise routine gradually with non-weight bearing exercise such as cycling and swimming.
I am looking for information on healing or resolving a recurring problem w/shin splints. I am overweight and am trying to use walking a means of increasing my cardio, but just about every time I attempt to walk for exercise, within minutes, my OUTER shins hurt to the point that I have to stop. I ice them afterwards, but as soon as I resume my walking for exercise, they come right back.
If the pain is on the outside of the shin bone then it isn't true shin splints. It is probably more of a compartment problem or muscle imbalance issue. I would start by stretching your calf muscles frequently and making sure you have the right shoes for your foot shape/walking gait.
i play a lot of tennis, but i havnt played for over 6 weeks cause of shin splints. it hurt moderately when walking for the first 3 weeks then eased down but i still get awkward moments. im 18 years old, should i be recovering quicker. ive been icing and stretching everyday. i've also been playing some table tennis and just hitting a tennis ball against a wall. neither i did with high intensity and i stopped if i felt pain. what should i do?
@indyk91 You need to work out what is causing the problem. It is commonly from foot problems such as overpronation or oversupination and also tight calf muscles. Correcting either of these problems would probably help.
I recently started playing basketball, I have extremely flat feet, I use either nice running shoes with insoles for flat feet, or basketball shoes with the same insoles. They work fine to keep my feet from hurting, but after a few weeks of basketball my shins started hurting when I would land from jumping. I would just walk it off, but after a couple weeks of that, the pain took longer to go away. Now after playing, my legs are sore and swollen for at least a day. What should I do to prevent it?
@Blown4banger NO! Although a stress rfacture can increase in size but it won't cause a full fracture just like that! rest is the only answer for a stress fracture.
im not a runner but i do a heavy lifting job often lifting flatpack furniture on my shoulder often up flights of stairs into ppls houses . i now have shin splints and it i get sharp pains when i walk upstairs . how long should i stay off work ?
i have bought running shoes and they help a little...but it still hurts to stand, sit, and sometimes lay down...but i can walk properly now..which is good :D My hip locks now wen i stretch which doesnt hurt, but i am a little concerned about. and my ankles are hurting a lot now.
tried strengthening them? Just do calve raises religiously. I know it will hurt at first but i bet it will get better. I'll say a little prayer for ya
@magview11 Yes over a relatively long period of time and if you are doing heavy weights with low reps. This is suggested more to keep you exercising for the hopefully short period that your are off running!
@buakananginamo Hi. Generally I would say no. Whilst stress fractures of the Tibia do occur as a result of overuse injuries, I think it would be unlikely that a genuine case of shin splints would cause a stress fracture.
ah ok...that would help....i have another question...im playing basketball and my shin hurts when done playing....im nervous because im thinking maybe i have stress fracture....what are the symtoms of stress fracture of tibia bone?
Hi. Recently when I have been running. My shins are getting exerted very easily (after .3 miles). The feeling is not one of pain and feels more like a regular workout sore. Any ideas on what it could be?
I have a question I'm trying to figure out.I'm loosing weight and trying to imcoperate running on the treadmill as part of my cardio s my personal trainer wants me to she thinks it's my shoes which I'm thinking it's too but I'm wondering if it's normal to have this happen to one leg. Seems like I'm not running heel to toe with my right but I seem to be with my left as I'm not having issues with my left leg. Also is it odd for that to happen on your dommant side? Thanks for answering this. :)
Im a Gymnast and i train 2 days a week and we normaly have to run at full speed down a kinda solft but hard runway at least once a week. And when I hit something to hard my shin starts to hurt really bad but thats if im running at full speed. And it only hurt for maybe 10 seconds but if I cant go straight back to the same routine. what should I do?
I would try to get in touch with a manualtheraphist. Not a regular one, but one where your country's professional athletes train. That is at least what I have done, at it is working quite well. They are often your country's best on these kinds of injuries. sorry about my bad english, I am from Norway you see.
Amonth ago, after 5Km run, I developed shin splints on both legs. A few days rest, pain reduced. Back at gym, doing hardcore exercises and playing tennis. Pain worsened. I am now suffering from a serious case of splints. I visit physio 2/week, apply ice pack, massage, wear orthotic incerts, do stretch exercise to help build muscles, rest and do upper body exercise plus cyclying & swimming. I am almost 60, but don't tell me grow old gracefully. When will I get better?
Thats impossible to answer I am afraid! It depends on the severity of the condition, treatment you recieve and if you can determine what caused the injury in the first place so that you can correct it.
Thank you. I was a little concerned after reading other people's comments. I am a little afraid to aggravate my conditon by running too soon after recovery.
hmm the other day i noticed a pain in my legs. on this video it says splints are only on the inside, my pains are on the outside, a dull aching pain, can be a bit more painful, any ideas what it is?
good luck mate. i had a similar problem. doctors are generally shit. once when i was leaving the surgery i saw someone chain smoking outside, and it gave me an idea...
so i made chain appointments. i went to one, and as i left, i immediately made another, etc etc
eventually it pissed them off enough that they offered me some decent drugs and a decent referal.
ive had shin splints for about a mnth now, and they wont go away. this seriously sucks cuz i just missed a HUGE track meet... some1 else ran in my spot. any advice on how to make them go away? this has NEVER happened before and ive been running for over 6 yrs
I got it for the first time in my life a couple weeks ago. I went out for a 6 hour walk and I felt fine that night. Woke up and it hurt like hell. I tried walking it off, thinking that it was getting sore from not walking as much. I was wrong.
I've had this since , last week , at the beginning of last week . I had terrible pain , in the lower front of my shin . What happenned was , I believe I may have been running a little too much . So , now it's thursday , the pain has decreased drastically . I can finally walk perfectly m but when I begin to run , or start to run , it begins to hurt , will anything reccommended in this video help ???
Cheers, best video so far on the net. Once you have got rid of the dreaded shin splints, do they then stay away because the muscles have strengthened?.
Hey, I have had shin splints for about 2 weeks now. I have a Gym class(Team Sports) every day we play football. I can't afford to sit out or I will fail. This class puts me in alot of pain, it's 70 Minutes everyday. I will start to tape.
get more rest, ice them down each night, and do different exercises to strenghten the front of your shin. These are just about the only tips i can give, however they should help atleast a little bit ;)
haha. for cheerleading we tumble on hard floor and we have the thinist shoes. they have to be though so they are light... suckss, i get shin splints all the time.
I also play soccer and I do not want to quit because of stupid shin splints but some times it's unbearable... I hate it so much. I wish they would just make a pill or injection so that my muscles don't get so stiff that i can't even walk. :(
I have very strong calves, but I'm not flexible at all.. What can I do? I'm sick of feeling like someone is taking an axe to my shins...

@nicksantana93 You may have to have some time out from training. Either that or carry on and it will get worse and worse until you can't train at all and then you will need even longer out!
sportsinjuryclinic 6 months ago
@nicksantana93 When I was in crosscountry I had serious shin splints. The trainer at my high school would wrap my arches every day before running and I never had pain while running. He then used ice cups to deep tissue massage the splints after practice. Worked well.

I have such bad shin splints, they hurt so much I want to cry, but i realllly dont want to stop running!!!!
sunnysummerheaven 7 months ago
@sunnysummerheaven rest is the only option initially. Tne longer you keep running the worse it will get and the longer it will take to heal in the long term.
Rest, stretch, massage, look at running shoes and gait etc and when pain-free start a very gradual return to running!
sportsinjuryclinic 7 months ago
Thank you!
moonchaser2 7 months ago
@Mathemagician95 Make sure you have the right arch support and cushioning. Stretch your calf muscles. Get some sports massage to the calf and shin muscle. Ice the shin. Rest from activity for a couple of weeks. Try a taping technique on the lower leg, Try a calf/shin support. There are so many options!
sportsinjuryclinic 7 months ago
can i ice and then apply the tape, or will that not be beneficial?
futuresunset77sky 7 months ago
@futuresunset77sky Yes you can do that but the tape may not stick as well. You might be better to leave it a while after icing to make sure that the skin is completely dry and the skin has had a chance to warm again as the glues in the tape work better when warmed.

So..I train every morning with Marines because I go to boot camp soon, I can't afford to rest because I need to stay in shape before I get shipped off...
Both of my legs have shin splints and I massage them daily with no relief. The pain doesn't start until I start running, then it fades in and out...
What can I do?
Rico21R 7 months ago
@Rico21R You need to work out what has caused the shin splints. You may need more cushioning footwear, or you may need arch supports. You should get an assessment at a specialist running shop. Tight calf muscles is also a massive cause of shin splints so this should be addressed.

There quarter size round bumps that swell up This only happens when I run and even when I walk long distances
taf7895644 10 months ago
@taf7895644 Unlikely shin splints. More likely a compartment syndrome type problem or muscle problem. Make sure you have the right running shoes and stretch your calf muscles lots

adeel7592 10 months ago
@adeel7592 Follow the steps in the video. rest from aggravating activity, ice, calf stretching etc. If you are sure the insoles caused it, then remove them. You may need gait analysis to determine if you need insoles at all.

sasuke0447 10 months ago
@sasuke0447 What do you mean by the back of the shin? Do you mean the calf? Shin splints pain is located just to the inside of the shin bone at the front of the lower leg.
sportsinjuryclinic 10 months ago
@sasuke0447 that sounds more like you pulled your muscle.it happens when you do a drastic movement without stretchin... funny thing ur sasuke0447 an im naruto lol so you left the akutsky
425narutofan 10 months ago
@Jiminibobster NO!!!! Astro trainers aren't ok for running. You MUST have proper running shoes to provide adequate support and cushioning. Make sure you get a gait analysis first so you get the right running shoes for your feet and running style.
sportsinjuryclinic 11 months ago
@Jiminibobster depends on other factors. It is certainly common in new runners and especially those who start running too much too soon (generally you should have a rest day inbetween if you are new to it). Other things such as road surface, running shoes, foot type and flexibility all play a part too.
sportsinjuryclinic 11 months ago
can you get shin splints from heavy squatting?
kingpullback83 11 months ago
@kingpullback83 Unlikely. Pain in the shin area is probably coming from elsewhere
sportsinjuryclinic 11 months ago
I heard that if you keep on hitting your shin, or any other body part that within time it your bone with become stronger, which in turn makes your bone less likely to get injured. Wolff's law seems as a possible treatment for splints doesn't it?
Hellogoodbye90gm 11 months ago
@Hellogoodbye90gm Unlikely! Shin splints has nothing to do with the strength of the bone. It is to do with the pull of the muscle and fascial attachments on it, so I don't think this is feasible!

ive had a pain in my shin, right underneath my knee for a long long time now is that bad its a type of paint that starts when i bend down to tie my shoe or run or when i put pressure on it with my fingers
AnXxiieTyZz 1 year ago
@AnXxiieTyZz its unlikely shin splints as these are usually lower down the leg. The bit that hurts when you press it - is it directly on the bone or to one side? How old are you?
sportsinjuryclinic 11 months ago
@sportsinjuryclinic its directly under the bone and im 15
AnXxiieTyZz 11 months ago
@AnXxiieTyZz SOunds more like Osgood Schlatters disease this cause pain on the shin bone high up nearer the knee. Often a bump will appear there as well. It occurs in people your age.
sportsinjuryclinic 11 months ago
@joelhannan It depends on a number of factors. Saying how long isn't possible. You need tor est until it is painfree to walk and you also need to correct the causes of it which apply to your case.

i have had a strong pain when playing soccer in mainly the lower inside right leg just above the ankle, when walking or resting there is zero pain...is it shin splints? what shud i do to make it go away? it isnt a stress fracture is it? i have never had any problems like this before. it started stright after not streching before running for 20 min with new soccer boots on...please help
kiwiana345 1 year ago
@kiwiana345 Is the pain just to the inside of the shin bone? Shin splints will usually come on during exercise, not whilst stretching beforehand. If the pain started when you were doing a stretch I think a muscle strain is more likely.
sportsinjuryclinic 1 year ago
@sportsinjuryclinic it is not during stretching, just when im running or doing sports the pain comes-no pain from stretching. and yes the pain is in the lower shin just on the inside...
kiwiana345 1 year ago
@kiwiana345 Ahh sorry missed the 'not' in the last sentence. Yes shin splints is possible. You need to find the cause of it in order to treat it effectively. Generally this is tight calf muscles and inadequate footwear.
sportsinjuryclinic 1 year ago
@sportsinjuryclinic thanks for your replies, just wondering: it couldnt really be flat feet or the way i walk/run, because ive never ever had this before and i have been playing sports, etc for ages
kiwiana345 1 year ago
@kiwiana345 Ok, but these things can get worse. The tightness in your lower leg muscles can contribute to more severe overpronation. Also if you have recnelty increased your training then this extra load may cause it to develop. Even if you have the wrong footwear this could be the cause.
sportsinjuryclinic 1 year ago
@darkstar3x16 Most often related to having tight calf muscles - make sure you really stretch them out several times a day.

@ectomy1235 Reduce how much you run by 50 percent, Ice after running, and warm up and stretch before and after, running on grass barefeet helps some ppl. try it
EuroPhantom22 1 year ago
@ectomy1235 you should sit out for 2 weeks and see how it heels up. I had to learn it the hard way (stretch fracture) which took me 6 months to recover.
fiftymiler 11 months ago
@ectomy1235 i have the same problem, resting won't really help. My leg hurts like 4.5 years now, i had longer rest period and during that time it was ok but as soon as you start doing your sport activities again it gradually comes back. I also went on expensive therapies, iced my leg, done pretty much everything i could think off...
I don't really think shin splints can go away :(
MadPropzBaller 7 months ago
@MadPropzBaller What about getting your running/walking gait assessed and trying insoles or different shoes etc?
sportsinjuryclinic 7 months ago
@sportsinjuryclinic You know what's the funny thing tho...my first problem was a hematoma that i had on my left calf...i had it for quite some time and it hurt like hell every time i jumped, but then i got some special insoles (i always wore insoles but those were for my flat feet). These new insoles made the pain in my calf go away, but in a few days i started developing shin pain. Maybe it's because of them? I don't know anymore...i also have lower back problems which might be related?
MadPropzBaller 7 months ago
@MadPropzBaller Calf muscle tightness is cloely linked to shin splints. If you have had a haematoma in the calf the muscle is probabaly very tight. It seems ilke too much of a coincidence for them not to be linked. Try lots and lots of calf stretching and some sports massage too if you can

hello sportsinjuryclinic, I have been running very solidly for around 5 or a little more years, this year i have first encountered shin splints, it was initially in both shins, but now just the left shin, today i tried to run but the pain was too much so i had to stop, I run 3-5 times a week for up to 1:30.00 but im having so much trouble with my left shin, i really cant run for more than about 2 days in a row, i give it a rest for 5 days, but it returns after 3 days of running, what do i do??
ectomy1235 1 year ago
I used to get shin splints when i ran anything over about 2 miles with any frequency--say more than once a week--so it was impossible to train for distance events like a 10k, etc. The only thing that saved me was getting RID OF the support, and letting my feet do the job they were meant to do.. I started with the vibram five fingers, now i'm doing a mix of 5 fingers/barefoot running. the difference has been so dramatic it's something you have to try to believe. just amazing!

could you possibly have shin splints on your upper shin
icebaby102345 1 year ago
@icebaby102345 Usually they are in the mid to lower part of the shin, but they could be higher up, as long as the pain is on the inside of the shin bone. Otherwise it would be something else.

hey there, i stoped doing exercise when i left school, and just started running again 2 years later and i have shin splints, could this be from be putting on weight? i also have flat feet but have never had a problem, and i have good running shoes and arch support
CronicFiend 1 year ago
@CronicFiend Hi. It is probably a combination of starting up again, being heavier than before and the flat feet. Make sure you rest until pain free, ice and stretch stretch stretch! The calf muscles are actually the most important part to stretch. Get some massage too. Try to loose some weight by other methods (non-weight bearing - cycle etc) and make sure you definately have the right support in your shoes!
sportsinjuryclinic 1 year ago
@sportsinjuryclinic cheers for that, haha yeah i gotta lose this weight for new years! only like 5kg any ideas?
CronicFiend 1 year ago

Please advise.
Thank you.
ssrobelot 1 year ago
@ssrobelot Hi
If the pain is on the outside of the shin bone then it isn't true shin splints. It is probably more of a compartment problem or muscle imbalance issue. I would start by stretching your calf muscles frequently and making sure you have the right shoes for your foot shape/walking gait.
sportsinjuryclinic 1 year ago
i play a lot of tennis, but i havnt played for over 6 weeks cause of shin splints. it hurt moderately when walking for the first 3 weeks then eased down but i still get awkward moments. im 18 years old, should i be recovering quicker. ive been icing and stretching everyday. i've also been playing some table tennis and just hitting a tennis ball against a wall. neither i did with high intensity and i stopped if i felt pain. what should i do?
indyk91 1 year ago

Blown4banger 1 year ago
@Blown4banger I think you should get it checked out to make sure its not a stress fracture. This presents with similar symptoms to shin splints.
sportsinjuryclinic 1 year ago
@sportsinjuryclinic Stress fracture? Does that mean my leg could like snap if I jump and land wrong or something?
Blown4banger 1 year ago
@Blown4banger NO! Although a stress rfacture can increase in size but it won't cause a full fracture just like that! rest is the only answer for a stress fracture.

buakananginamo 2 years ago
@buakananginamo Hi. Generally I would say no. Whilst stress fractures of the Tibia do occur as a result of overuse injuries, I think it would be unlikely that a genuine case of shin splints would cause a stress fracture.
