I think it was because it was almost Jeanette Winterson's autobiography, and she didn't expect it to be so popular (she wrote it whilst she was at Oxford). When they made this, she probably realised she wanted a bit of distance (so people stopped assuming it was completely true and associating her with the main character) so when she wrote the screenplay she changed the name. Winterson seems to be a pretty private person, that's why I think this...
@SomniaAlondra have you read her autobiography? Its called "why be happy when you can be normal?" was just done on BBC R4 with Winterson reading it. Quite illuminating and very good. It sheds a bit of a light on this story.
Bloody great, the days when programmes from the BBC where made to educate and entertain giving an understanding from one generation to the next, unlike today where the BBC exploits the public and its standing by churning out PC (politicaly correct) material whose only effect results in the dumbing down social context of todays culture.

I'd forgotten about this. The TV series was brilliant.
I'm off to see if I can get it on DVD.

"Only the best for Elsie."
She was lucky, Jess was, to have Elsie and Cissy and the vermin-killer woman. And she was lucky to have Miss Jewsbury -- and vice versa.
