Robert Guillaume and Billy Chrystal were so deadpan in this show it was perfect. Civil rights were still controversial when this show aired and the show dealt with it with humor and style. The character they player were perfect foils for how ridiculous bigotry and racism are.

I come from a law enforcement family. Notice Tinkler is wearing a typical police badge ( a Sheriff usually wears a star shaped badge) also his shoulder patch reads "Police". A Chief is usually appointed by the city or town council (or mayor) and a Sheriff is elected by the voters of the county. Of course our law enforcement is mostly taken from England's own Robert Peeler.
