Some of my BEST childhood memories are of listening to records at my mamaw and papaws house...papaw had owned a radio station , and when it closed he kept all the records and he let my brother and I play them , THank you papaw for giving me this music and al ove and appreciation of this fine music
Some of my favorite childhood memories in the 1980's were spending summers at my grandparents' house on Lake Keowee in South Carolina. My granddad would throw the doors open to the porch at night and flip on a Glenn Miller record. Every time I hear these great songs, it brings me back some great memories. And I'm so thankful I've got them and it opened my mind to different music. And on a tough day, these songs completely clear my mind.
they say we only think that music was better in the past because only the good ones had staying power, but if look at the charts from back in the day untill the late 80's and compare it with today's music, you can tell we are right
Glenn Miller's band played well but was pretty tame stuff, and definitely not the founder of Swing music, the best or otherwise. Study your jazz history: Miller came at the end of the Swing era, which effectively ended in 1942-43. World War II, the inordinate cost of big band travel, and strikes by NYC band musicians against radio not paying royalties brought it to an end. Instead, musicians jammed, no longer constrained by the dance music, and out of that came Bebop (Charlie Parker, etc.).
Having been born in 1944, I'd wager Glenn's music was among the first I ever heard as a baby in my father's Oldsmobile. I still love it, and "Pearls" in particular.
absolutely love this piece of music. I play lead alto in the Moray Swing Band, Scotland. We have a gig on Friday and I'm playing the alto solo in this. Listening over and over again, won't be as perfect as this but I'll try my best :)
"A String of Pearls" became a no. 1 hit on the Billboard pop singles chart when released by Glenn Miller on RCA Victor. The music was composed by Jerry Gray, who also wrote "Pennsylvania 6-5000", no. 5 on Billboard in 1940, "Introduction to a Waltz" with Glenn Miller, "Jeep Jockey Jump", and :I Dreamt I Dwelt in Harlem", no. 3 on Billboard in 1941.
@kingoma61 Ditched 3 others before finding this, which has the BRIGHT opening dynamics the others lacked. Funny how you can remember how a tune's SUPPOSED to sound ! ! ! ! Thanks so much GreekC for this and getting it RIGHT ! ! ! My 550 playlists are a compilation of the best tunes from 2000 other channels.
111 lists cover every year since 1900 so I've added this to 1940. 320 artists each have playlists, so you'll hear this on the GM list, too. Finally on my swing favorites playlist! ! !
@kingoma61 The name String of Pearls is for how the melody notes look on the music staff going up and then down in a string hence the name of the song...
