  • Today's men skaters (and some women skaters) need to watch his camel spins.

  • robin was the best skater in the world unbelievable creativity if you haven't seen his professional competitions after this where he does the backflip go see he's amazing

  • how amazing was he!!!! i never realised!!!!

  • robin was the only skater in the world to be a genius end of

  • I am gobsmacked! Words can't express how amazing this guy was ( and maybe still is)!

  • God, he was sexy

  • gives me goosebumps every time.

  • Magnificent skater he was.

  • This bloke was phenomenal - he makes me proud to be Bristolian!

  • he just does it all with so much ease!!! wow

  • very good

  • Beautiful skating. Very graceful. Apart from missed jump, he made everything look so effortless, like he was a bird soaring in the sky. Very emotional at the end. Job well done :)

  • Robin was artistry and elegance personified. I'd swop any of his axels for today's quads.

  • Torvil and Dean are a DANCING pair - Robin is a figure skating single skater. Very different.

  • @clearlypure. You can't compare men's free skating to ice dancing. The only thing they have in common is that both are on ice and have steps & edges. Multiple rotation jumps are illegal in ice dancing as are multiple rotation spins, equally you would not win a bean in singles skating without them. Torvill and Dean were possibly the best ice dancers in history, Robin was one of the best male singles skaters in history.

  • Seamless skating and great height in those jumps - this is wonderful!!

  • Haha asif he did win and he was only doing doubles!! Skating has changed soo much since then!!

  • OMG the height of that axel was amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow the first axel was amazing

  • Stunning skater. One of the best ever.

  • Couldn't agree more! So elegant.

  • he has always been my favorite male skater,to this day. Just beautiful....!

  • Saw him live in Lake Placid and then we were in the same restaurant afterwards, What a normal, fun guy!

  • I absolutely love this man! He makes me want to become an ice-skater, bless him almost taking a tumble on the podium.

  • love the superman part 2:36

  • I remember watching this on the tele when I was 14 and being mesmerized by the beauty (especially the slow section to the music "Murder on the Orient express"), Great memory, so gracefull!!

  • I think i had been sent to bed

  • Magnifique, bravo.

    Thank

  • Была влюблена в Робина когда мне было 18 лет, лично дарила ему цветы и целовала в щёчку ...замечательный фигурист!!!

  • Aside from a minor stumble near the beginning... absolutely effortless!

  • The music, the choreography, his artistry, elegance... Beautiful!

  • He was incredible! sorry to say but this beats beyond doubt the artistry (or attempted artistry) of most of today's skaters...we miss you Robin!

  • bristol boy well done

  • Lovely performance but check out his Free programme from Worlds 1980 - even better still. Shame he was far behind after the figures at Worlds as it was his best skate of his life,

  • Robin is probably one of the best all around skaters. He was good technically and artistically. I skated in Colorado Springs one year and was able to see him up close and personal. Those double axels were insane! He would start at a corner and finish half way down the rink. INCREDIBLE!

  • what was he music he skated to?

  • Nearly 30 years later, Robin is still my favorite. I've always wondered why he didn't have a triple axel because his double was so high and totally effortless. (Perhaps he chose to focus on choreography and reverse direction spins instead.)

  • So many memories and a very proud day for the City of Bristol in the UK. I lived about a mile from where he lived and I remember staying up until four in the morning to watch this. The reception he got when he came back was just the best. and fully deserved. One other fact about this clip is that the commentator on this was Alan Weeks, who was also born in Bristol, so you can see why this is a proud moment for the city. Thanks for posting

  • whoa.

  • whos better him or chris dean?

  • No sane man tries to kick himself in the head mid step sequence. Robin = le madness. Gotta love him though. He actually achieved something.

  • omg all you please shut up about britsh skaters we dont have all the things like you people have. he is really good so shut up

  • Are you talking to me? O_o..wow

  • Robin just pissed that Britain can never win a medal in fgure skating in the next 1000000000 years, cos of the coaches that spoil their students!!! Britain will never make it ever in figure skating, for the past 10 years british skaters have ever gotten better than 20th place...Kiss my ass Robin, cos Britain can only wish they get a medal ever again..Torvill and Dean and Robin Cousins is all they got..HAHAHA!! No more after that, British will officially never ever win a medal again!

  • that axel was cool

  • lol

  • He is absolutely amazing!! :-)

  • OMG i forgot how good Robin was.Hi sspeed on the ice is breathtaking. I was almost crying again at the end, brought back memories. Use to love the iceskating back then, with Cousins&Curry we were the best. At the time, Cousins camel splits were the highest recorded. He was so elegant being so tall. Will now reminisce and watch the YT vids, lovely to see again. Thanks. B x

  • this is so true. It's still very impressive after almost 30 years!

  • britain shows there best

    woo hoo britain

  • British skaters suck, in the past 10 years they haven't gotten any better than 20th place at national competitions...

  • At least they're not arrogant like all fucking Yanks.

  • yeah so???????? we have tovil and dean, curry and this guy to show for it....we were better than you....we had world champions so FUCK YOU!!!!!!

  • Incredible. The best ever skater, bar none!

  • Beautiful skating.

Such a skinny git at the time LOL!

  • WOW he's sooo fast!

  • he is amazing!! i wish i could skate like that X

  • Robin is a fantastic ice skater, loved it, and I liked the split jump, absolutely outstanding.

  • omg his triples are good of course but that first single axel was so high..didnt even look like an axel. niice :D

  • Amazing

truly mind blowing at the speed he moves across the ice

  • i thought he was going to fall flat on his face in the award ceremony :S

  • Fantastic!

If you haven't already, check out Robin's 'Satan takes a holiday' programme. Love it!

  • AWESOME.

  • He really was quite something!

  • Could anyone please tell me the name of his opening song? Who is it by and what is it called? Thanks

  • omg he 's never changed ! he s truly wonderful and still is

  • omg my first private lesson is this sunday!

  • im 13 and ive started working as a steward in taunton somerset

  • Amazing. You just do not see skating with this kind of beauty anymore, not with the men anyway.

  • He really was a truly beautiful skater

  • Some of the best camels in the business.

  • does anyone know the name of his opening music...who's it's by and title??

  • Hi The opening music is called Belle Du Jour, then following the disco bit, the fanfare is from Superman... Then Paint It Black

    Cheers....

  • It's interesting to note that this comp. was so close that none of the judges could agree on a winner. The majority of the panel did agree that Cousins should come in 2nd. Since no one had a majority of 1st places they had to count 2nd places of which Cousins had a majority. That is how he won the gold medal. I think it took over an hour after the comp. to figure out who had won. Seems to me like it should have been very easy.

  • this is my new favorite skater. he is f*ckin awsome!

  • yea, hes now a judge on Dancing On Ice

  • nice to see him as a skater not a judge good memories

  • It took me a long time to find out.. but I think I'm right in saying that the middle music (slow) is from the movie Murder on the Orient Express.....

  • Does anybody know that name of the music in the middle slow section of the routine. Thanks

  • It's from the Movie "Murder on the Midnight Train" by Agatha Christie...and the end is from Paint it black...Rolling Stones...

  • Ops...sorry...from the movie " Murder on the Orient Express" and Paint it black...rolling stones...

  • Does anybody know that name of the music in the middle slow section of the routine. Thanks

  • he is so grace full on the ice! where was his back flip??

  • Back flips are not allowed in amateur competition. Terry Kubicka (USA) performed one in 1976 Olympics & Worlds and after that the I.S.U banned them.

  • oh my god ...really?

why did they bann them? you know?

  • The ISU banned backflips in the late 70s because it was believed they could not be landed on one foot, as all skating jumps are supposed to. But many skaters like Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning, Surya Bonaly land them on one foot on a regular basis.

  • I think it was the direction of the rotation that banned the backflip. It was banned immediately after the 1976 Olympics.

I think Surya Bonaly is the only skater to land it on one foot. Scott Hamilton never has.

  • Robin was the only figure-skater I've ever loved. There may have been a few who could do the threefold jumps better, but Robins moves are of an unequalled elegance that distinct him as the best ARTIST on the ice ever!!

  • Absolutely disco-tastic!

  • Dam he's good...

Wait, what's up with the higher quality option? o.o

  • Thank you so much for reposting this!

  • Brilliant. thanks for sharing it

  • Amazing! That opening delayed axel jump deserves a gold all by itself! He seemed to hang in the air. And his death drop was simply unbelievable. It's evident that he influenced Brian Boitano - squint and they're almost indistinguishable!

  • Have so enjoyed watching this!! Loved Robin in 1980, fantastic to see him again. I had forgotten just how wonderful he was. Thanks for posting

  • His music was excellent in this prog. Don't think any skater since has used the music so well, and got the height he got with his jumps! Loved the "Paint It Black" excerpt at the end!

  • No one seems to glide across the ice as swiftly as he does. ^^ I absolutely love his skill + talent. Love you Robin!!!

  • His beginning music was too retro/rock-like for me, but the slow section and after that was lovely.

  • The top international skaters today such as Brian Joubert, Evan Lysacek, and Takahashi of Japan needs to take a lesson from this man. This is pure skating. Awesome performance.

  • Brilliant! I remember watching this in 1980. He actualy skated this prog better at the worlds after the Olympics but got silver. Back then skaters had to skate "figures" before the SP which comprised part of the marks.Robin never did very well in these and had too much ground to make up on eventual winner Jan Hoffmann of the then GDR. Cracking video though!!

  • I haven't seen this programme for 28 years but it is still as fantastic as I remember it. I can still recall the nerves of watching Robin Cousins win his gold medal that brilliant night.

  • Robin's smooth, continuity of flow over the ice was the best ever and has never been bettered since. The clean edges and control are better than seeing any quad. Saying that, the jumps he did were perfect and so high and long. Many skaters can get good height on jumps but few can get both good height and length - Robin could.

  • Wow! Todays skaters need to watch these masters!

  • Thank you so much for adding this video, it's been so wonderful to see that performance again. I was only 11 at the time and can remember so clearly being allowed to stay up late to watch Robin skate on to gold. I've never forgotten the middle section music, so very hauntingly beautiful.

*sigh* What wonderful memories. Many thanks again..

  • Hands down, the best skater ever - regardless of not doing as many triples/quads as others do nowadays. My VHS tape of this performance is shredded from overuse, so many thx for posting! This is awesome!

  • Thanks for posting this video. Great to be able to see Robin again.
