robin was the best skater in the world unbelievable creativity if you haven't seen his professional competitions after this where he does the backflip go see he's amazing
Can anyone settle a dispute in my house? I distinctly remember Robin doing the very first 'backflip on ice', either in his exhibition piece at the 1980 Worlds or shortly afterwards, but my elder sister (also a figure skater, as was I at the time, but she was 24 then and I was only 14) says it was Scott Hamilton, the American skater, who did one first. Help please? She's now 53 and I'm 43 and this disagreement has been going on (in a friendly way, of course *grin*) ever since!
Beautiful skating. Very graceful. Apart from missed jump, he made everything look so effortless, like he was a bird soaring in the sky. Very emotional at the end. Job well done :)
@clearlypure. You can't compare men's free skating to ice dancing. The only thing they have in common is that both are on ice and have steps & edges. Multiple rotation jumps are illegal in ice dancing as are multiple rotation spins, equally you would not win a bean in singles skating without them. Torvill and Dean were possibly the best ice dancers in history, Robin was one of the best male singles skaters in history.
This brings back fantastic memories of my Mum and I being glued to the tv to watch Robin as we had also done when John Curry won in 1976. Fantastic stuff! Is it really 30 years ago...that's scarey lol!
I remember watching this on the tele when I was 14 and being mesmerized by the beauty (especially the slow section to the music "Murder on the Orient express"), Great memory, so gracefull!!
Lovely performance but check out his Free programme from Worlds 1980 - even better still. Shame he was far behind after the figures at Worlds as it was his best skate of his life,
Robin is probably one of the best all around skaters. He was good technically and artistically. I skated in Colorado Springs one year and was able to see him up close and personal. Those double axels were insane! He would start at a corner and finish half way down the rink. INCREDIBLE!
Nearly 30 years later, Robin is still my favorite. I've always wondered why he didn't have a triple axel because his double was so high and totally effortless. (Perhaps he chose to focus on choreography and reverse direction spins instead.)
So many memories and a very proud day for the City of Bristol in the UK. I lived about a mile from where he lived and I remember staying up until four in the morning to watch this. The reception he got when he came back was just the best. and fully deserved. One other fact about this clip is that the commentator on this was Alan Weeks, who was also born in Bristol, so you can see why this is a proud moment for the city. Thanks for posting
I hate Robin Cousins!! Every time I'm watching something to do with figure skating, and every time a skater's program isn't perfect, even if they dont drop! He still makes remarks like "Oh, it wasn't perfect to my taste" Im like "Shut the fuck up you stupid fag!" He seriously ruined my viewing for the 2009 worlds, I swear the only performance he didnt make complaints about was Evan Lysacek, I can't wait till that old fool dies and fucks off!
Robin just pissed that Britain can never win a medal in fgure skating in the next 1000000000 years, cos of the coaches that spoil their students!!! Britain will never make it ever in figure skating, for the past 10 years british skaters have ever gotten better than 20th place...Kiss my ass Robin, cos Britain can only wish they get a medal ever again..Torvill and Dean and Robin Cousins is all they got..HAHAHA!! No more after that, British will officially never ever win a medal again!
OMG i forgot how good Robin was.Hi sspeed on the ice is breathtaking. I was almost crying again at the end, brought back memories. Use to love the iceskating back then, with Cousins&Curry we were the best. At the time, Cousins camel splits were the highest recorded. He was so elegant being so tall. Will now reminisce and watch the YT vids, lovely to see again. Thanks. B x
It's interesting to note that this comp. was so close that none of the judges could agree on a winner. The majority of the panel did agree that Cousins should come in 2nd. Since no one had a majority of 1st places they had to count 2nd places of which Cousins had a majority. That is how he won the gold medal. I think it took over an hour after the comp. to figure out who had won. Seems to me like it should have been very easy.
The ISU banned backflips in the late 70s because it was believed they could not be landed on one foot, as all skating jumps are supposed to. But many skaters like Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning, Surya Bonaly land them on one foot on a regular basis.
Robin was the only figure-skater I've ever loved. There may have been a few who could do the threefold jumps better, but Robins moves are of an unequalled elegance that distinct him as the best ARTIST on the ice ever!!
Amazing! That opening delayed axel jump deserves a gold all by itself! He seemed to hang in the air. And his death drop was simply unbelievable. It's evident that he influenced Brian Boitano - squint and they're almost indistinguishable!
His music was excellent in this prog. Don't think any skater since has used the music so well, and got the height he got with his jumps! Loved the "Paint It Black" excerpt at the end!
The top international skaters today such as Brian Joubert, Evan Lysacek, and Takahashi of Japan needs to take a lesson from this man. This is pure skating. Awesome performance.
Brilliant! I remember watching this in 1980. He actualy skated this prog better at the worlds after the Olympics but got silver. Back then skaters had to skate "figures" before the SP which comprised part of the marks.Robin never did very well in these and had too much ground to make up on eventual winner Jan Hoffmann of the then GDR. I haven't seen this programme for 28 years but it is still as fantastic as I remember it. I can still recall the nerves of watching Robin Cousins win his gold medal that brilliant night.
Robin's smooth, continuity of flow over the ice was the best ever and has never been bettered since. The clean edges and control are better than seeing any quad. Saying that, the jumps he did were perfect and so high and long. Many skaters can get good height on jumps but few can get both good height and length - Robin could.
Thank you so much for adding this video, it's been so wonderful to see that performance again. I was only 11 at the time and can remember so clearly being allowed to stay up late to watch Robin skate on to gold. I've never forgotten the middle section music, so very hauntingly beautiful.

Hands down, the best skater ever - regardless of not doing as many triples/quads as others do nowadays. My VHS tape of this performance is shredded from overuse, so many thx for posting! This is awesome!
Today's men skaters (and some women skaters) need to watch his camel spins.

bagOFcrap 3 years ago
Back flips are not allowed in amateur competition. Terry Kubicka (USA) performed one in 1976 Olympics & Worlds and after that the I.S.U banned them.
npe1 3 years ago
oh my god ...really?
why did they bann them? you know?
bagOFcrap 3 years ago
The ISU banned backflips in the late 70s because it was believed they could not be landed on one foot, as all skating jumps are supposed to. But many skaters like Scott Hamilton, Kurt Browning, Surya Bonaly land them on one foot on a regular basis.
LWOPP 3 years ago
I think it was the direction of the rotation that banned the backflip. It was banned immediately after the 1976 Olympics.
I think Surya Bonaly is the only skater to land it on one foot. Scott Hamilton never has.
