well..reading through most of the comments..I think you guys are actually deceiving yourselves..making statements that you like honesty..and why is that socially better..and so on..c'mon..be honest to yourselves..lying is good..and there is quite a handful (or even maybe no one) that could accept the naked truth about everything
@Laughingblades It's a really fascinating thing to consider. Are the people who lie actually "winning out" over those who favor honesty or pursue the truth? In some senses the "choice" is between "humanity" and our animal nature....
To suggest that people who lie are "more intelligent" is a value judgement. "Your health is your wealth" as the saying goes, so how can it be intelligent to create a life based on falsehoods which essentially isolate a person in heart. Socially it does not benefit mankind as a whole and we are social beings. What is a life without love and trust?!! Psychopaths, who are "masters" of deception, have one kind of intelligence, but that is all.
@Laughingblades ....- Which of these is the 'better" is a value judgement in itself again. But i feel that life is much richer where there is honesty, openness, cooperation and caring for one another and most people aspire to this. We've just got to get the better of the psychopaths in power.
@razornet1 the full debate including the audience Q&A session is available as a podcast: thersa.org/events/audio-and-past-events/2011/why-do-we-deceive-ourselves
Lying is a form of duplicity. There is a survival value to being able to deceive others. Children mimic their elders, Elders oftentimes appear to be lying to children - where do adults come up with their arbitrary rules? Children who seek truth-telling are ostracized - are called tattle tales and nerds! Socially skilled people are adept at lying to please others. Pleasing others gets you ahead as a rule of thumb.
This video _does_ answer the question, albeit very indirectly. However, to serve this purpose better, I would opt for a different title, possibly something like, “What are some possible relationships of deception and [insert variables here]".
I'm the only person I trust to lie to me so honestly.

Everyone deceives themselves; Sartre called it "Bad Faith" and it is essentially unavoidable

@uyouhaveyou I think people who lie successfully are probably often more intelligent and this could be a selective pressure for intelligent liars :3

@uyouhaveyou I agree. We need some cooperatives like Mondragon Cooperative Corporation in Spain IMO.
