It certainly has a broad judeo-christian theme. Leonard Cohen comes from a Jewish background and religion often appears in his work, as does the theme of music itself. I find it so sad that people don't even realise that he wrote it (not that bloody Wainwright guy). Cohen's verison is much more raw and wmotive.
I like the Kate Voegale verson better, but still really good
