This is a really cool flick. A little overboard and far fetched at times, but really cool. And just as a side note, I always thought the bald guy in the movie looked like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.
where are you from?! I am from Southside Jamaica Queens and they captured the environment of young, black, and urban in the 90's. I watched this w/ my childhood friends and the movie makes us rmbr stuff that we'd long forgotten. The arrogance of the young men, harassment of the cops, even the columbia's and carthartts that they wear.
@Abyssinia718 While it's not totally clear from your posting, I'm assuming you have an issue with my "overboard and far fetched" comment. If that's the case, here's what I meant by it. If you watch the movie, basically EVERY FIVE MINUTES OF EVERY DAY, the kids are stealing cars, getting beaten up by the cops and/or getting shot at. No matter where you live, VERY FEW are going to experience all of these things THIS OFTEN and that's where the movie is a bit of a stretch.
IDK dude... maybe u should reconsider your comment though... cause I've never been to Jersey before... but I'm from South Central, and we don't see crazy shit everyday, all day, every 5 min types of shit, but their are multiple felonies and crimes being committed daily, some even homicide. Anyway... unless u live in that area, or around that era, it's hard to make an opinion, unless u lived there.
@sfelogik (continued) What these people don't realize though is that on any given night when something goes down in the city, in the other 99.5% of town, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING happens. In other words, while big cities have their problems, they're not utter and complete choas all the time like Hollywood often suggests. That was really my only point and based on what you wrote, I'm not even totally sure how much you disagreed with me.
@sfelogik Personally, I live in South Philly, lived in NYC for three years and also used to live in Southwest Lansing (MI), which is not a friendly area. But urban crime is MORE OR LESS the same no matter where you go. Every big city has it...it's a reality. The problem is, people who have never lived in a big city before watch urban movies like "New Jersey Drive" and get the impression that big cities are these "war zones" where danger lurks around every corner. (continued)
Dude... the only reason the movie was made was because of actual events... yes it is a bit exaggerated and it's a story, but it's all based on events that were going on at the moment... if you research it, you will see that people were really jacking cars numerously in Jersey in the 90s, and the cops were really shooting at them and killing them. Maybe the way it plays out in the movie isn't exact, but similar events really did happen.
where are you from?! I am from Southside Jamaica Queens and they captured the environment of young, black, and urban in the 90's. I watched this w/ my childhood friends and the movie makes us rmbr stuff that we'd long forgotten. The arrogance of the young men, harassment of the cops, even the columbias and carthartts that they wear.
Where I used to live at, some of the movie theatres refused to show this flick and other "Hood" films. You had to go way out or wait for the video release.
i have never rooted more for the police in a 90s ghetto movie that in this movie. besides the obvious criminal use of a weapon in the beginning and the alleyway beating, the police were absolutely in the right going after these violent, sociopathic criminals
I'm a Spike Lee fan, but this movie was one of his weakest to me. The main character was lame and that had a lot to do with it. Also, it was a let down that the movie was filmed in Queens and not the Bricks. I think Mayor Sharp James had something to do with that.
@Punnch08 Very true. Mayor Sharpe didn't allow the film to be shot in Newark because Newark was known for being the grand theft auto capital of the world at that time.
@Punnch08 Spike Lee didn't direct this movie. Nick Gomez did, Spike Lee worked with him idk what he did though. I a'int from the East Coast so I wouldn't know this but I read on a few sites that NJ Drive was filmed in cities around Newark and in a couple scenes, Brooklyn. And the main character was cool for tihs movie. He a'int no Ice Cube or Method Man but he did a good job
ha ha ha ha ha ha my maan was like blaaaw! ha ha ha ha ha ha he almost toke you out kid! ha ha ha ha ha ha naw naaw ha ha ha ha i aint ha ha i aint laughin ha ha ha ha ha ha he almost had you kid ha ha ha ha
Good movie, but it didn't capture the whole epidemic in Newark ! it was much more brutal...Stolen cars running down kids during high speed chases, cars barreling into peoples homes...if you ride up to a stop sign ! you'd better run that motha fucka... cops even ran over innocent people during high speed chases, dead bodies found in the trunks of stolen cars...shit was bananas
does anybody know the jazz joint that plays in the background at various times throughout the movie? like when they outside Tiny's funeral and when Jason meets his moms in the park......
this movie is funny, because they say that where they live is "rough", and all of there problems are caused by there own doing, this movie is a perfect example of wangster america, people commiting crimes and thinking its cool, and then blaming it on there enironement, when theyre the ones who create the environement, makes me both laugh and shake my head quite a bit

@FishScale88 i saw the whole movie and i believe you when you say the cops are corrupt...but the cops and city officials being corrupt makes you turn around and steal cars? that just doesnt make sense, i just have a hard time feeling sorry for american kids who are out commiting stupid crimes when theres starving and hopeless kids all over the world who would kill to be in there shoes
@LEGALHUSTLE00 im an idiot because i dont feel sorry for american kids who have parents who care about them and can get food whenever they need it, i see, theres a whole world outside of america bud that has it just a tad bit harder than ppl in newark ...and in regards to your other comment, ya dont know me cyber gangster
im a jersey native 201/732 u already know , Newark has not gotten any better since this movie came out actually its gotten alot worse, last sunday 10/11/09 there were four different shootings, they had nothing to do with each other n a couple of people have been shot since then. bottom line if you come to new jersey stay the fuck out of newark .... fuck it, stay out jersey city and paterson to
I think this movie was shot in Jersey City ! it's wasn't the state of N.J. that didn't want the movie shot, it was Sharpe James crooked ass , he didn't want it shot in the city of Newark...filming did begin in Newark before it was moved.... you may be right though ! just what i've heard
In the beginning of this clip, they are driving past Automotive High school in Greenpoint Brooklyn. MY home. I remember hearing about them shooting some of this movie in my town. I never saw the movie, but I'd recognize the back of that school anytime! LOVE seeing Greenpoint on film back in the day!
wikipedia says nothing about this movie being filmed in brooklyn..it's was filmed in various places outside of newark..in the beginning the cars were doing donuts in the street, that was newark for sure
Wikipedia didn't grow up in Brooklyn, I did. I know that schoolyard. I played ball there as a kid and I STILL walk past it almost every other day! Maybe the majority of the film was shot in Jersey but that IS the back of Automotive high school with the McCarren park tennis courts right next door. I know my own neighborhood when I see it on film. Directors shoot film wherever they can and often they pretend one town is another one on screen. I remember them shooting this film here.
Spike Lee was involved? I had no idea. What was he executive producer or something? That's pretty interesting news. If I see this DVD in best buy next time I'm there I'm definitely picking it up. Peace.
@gmccall22 the part when dude had the fight with the guy with the fro was shot in brooklyn and the part he made his sister get out the car and the rest was in jersey

@son294 ..not tryin to brag but they made this movie about my hood..they got the stolen car thing down pack they use to steel cars around here like changin clothes
I think we have to remove Boys n The Hood from our Classics list. Cuba Gooding was way too square and fake. I know his character was a square, but he just fucked up the movie to me.

chickwitthagoodies 2 years ago
Yes it is good. Similar to Boyz n The Hood + New Jack City era.
Fire4FX 2 years ago
I think we have to remove Boys n The Hood from our Classics list. Cuba Gooding was way too square and fake. I know his character was a square, but he just fucked up the movie to me.
