Damm! Real musicians, playing real instruments! Using their own real voices! Wow! no computers,or autotune, synth drums or lip sync? LOL's must be grown ups playing REAL MUSIC
@achn2b Yep alot of those shows did that back then. Probably didn't have the sound systems in place like they should have to do the band justice so synching was the next best thing.
LOVE ERIC ! They came and played at our high-school in 1974. My mom almost disowned me. She thought Go All The Way was dirty ! lol, times have changed.....
TRIVIA: look at the white electric guitar eric carmen is playing.....does it look familiar? Just like the one Joan Jett always played. Eric gave that guitar to joan jett
@MaryMRevis Hi Again..He is playing rhythm guitar in this video and always played rhythm guitar (and piano of course) AFTER they recorded their 1st LP "Raspberries" which included GATW...What I meant is that he played the bass guitar on the original LP recording of GATW. He and David Smalley switched guitar types when recording the 2nd album "Fresh." Thanks!
I read somewhere where it was said that Eric Carmen and the Raspberries were big Beatles fans and heavily influenced by them...and well, what bands from that day and age weren't?!? But, it is so evident in this video, from the mannerisms and facial expressions from Eric Carmen...he looks like Paul McCartney trained him how to move his face muscles!
Although it may not be my favourite power pop song I will say that this is the definitive power pop song. You can't help but singing it once you hear it and it stays with you for the rest of your life.
i heard that eric carmen sold that guitar to joan jett in 1977 and thats the same melody maker guitar she still uses today, im so jealous, they dont make those ones anymore.
Gee, is my face red!! I suppose it is the case of a static am radio obscuring the lyrics but it still sounds the same on you tube. Must make note to look up lyrics prior to commenting.
@soundbounder No way that's all Eric's hair; one of the best heads of hair in the music business; but a very 70s style to be sure. If you were around back then, you should know it was the way it really was back then..Great stuff..
My sister who was 2.5 yrs older than me was being driven to the movies by our Dad and she had 3 girlfriends in the car. At the point where Carmen sings, "I know I love her screwing me", there was an unexpected silence. I believe my Dad was more embarrassed by the lyrices than the the 14 year old girls.
@sharonscorpioful ...ummmm, I think the lines are "Before her love, I was cruel and mean, there was a hole in the place where my heart should have been. But now I've changed...." Cute misheard lyric though. ;)
@Hto0h Also clearly synching when band members randomly stop playing at different times while you can still hear the music fade. Sometimes I believe Mike Douglass actually had some live stuff. Certainly when someone would sit in the interview area and sing and play from there it was alive--or at least very much appeared so. I think there is a video of Zappa on that show and that sure looked live with all the goofy stuff he does while playing and singing. Never the same twice.
@phair710 Definitely some shows did live, but many times it was synched. As a pre-teen I used to 'live' at CFTO studio in Toronto in the early 70s. Saw many many variety shows shot (especially 'Rollin On the River' with Kenny Rogers & The First Edition ... ). Sometimes even the most professional artists took a half dozen takes to get it down, others did it just once, and a few... were live. Oh, I just listened to this again while I was typing without looking at the video. Synched guaranteed..
@phair710 Just found this.... check out this clip from Mike Douglas' Show. You'll have to add in the website part......... /watch?v=pAsWrONvTAQ&feature=related You can hear what Eric is actually singing.
@Hto0h I watched the live video you suggested but it's kind of apples vs. oranges. They clearly have a piano which is not in the original and Eric stops playing for awhile which you can hear and he also sings a bit out of tune in one spot. Clearly Live, but I'm still not sure about the Mike Douglass show. I know that synching was done a lot and you can see that clearly on shows like Bandstand especially when the audience starts clapping before the music is finished.
@Hto0h As far as the triple voice effect, the pros had doublers and heavy compression available for thickness even though it may not have been available for home use until around 1978. If they are faking, it's the best I've ever seen. The drummer too has no missed or extra hits that I can see.
@Hto0h I've been a guitarist/singer/producer for 44 years myself. Only thing I can tell you for sure is the guitarist with the double neck in this video is absolutely perfect-both hands--finger positions and picking/strumming. I've seen bands fake it too and they are NEVER ever completely perfect like this appears to be. Singers are off-time by just a hair, players quit playing for just a nano-second while the sound of their instrument continues. a wrong chord/note/positioning. Just sayin'.
Lip syncing? I don't think so. Mike Douglass was taped live. The guitarist is putting his fingers where he should for the sound that the guitar is making. So it is likely that he is playing it for real. It was a small studio so the drummer wouldn't play loud.

@phair710 This is absolutely NOT live. It's the band syncing to a recording. In those days people didn't play to a midi/click track and you can't just paste a studio audio track over a live performance and make it work. It's difficult to even sing along with a track and make it look real. Besides, how did Eric triple his voice? I've been a musician (lead vocalist/drummer) for almost 40 years. I've been attending taped tv programs for longer than that. I know lyp-syncing, believe me. :)

I guess lip syncing was not even detected back then. Man I was so young and so naive! This group was considered Kiss's competitor back then. This was truly 'hard' rock.
@LisaDawnn This is actually overdubbed, not lip synced. There's a copy of this same video without overdubbing on YouTube if you do a search for "Go all the way Mike Douglas", i think it's the third one down. I tried to post the link, but it wasn't allowed apparently.
This song brings back a lot of memories. I remember dating a guy from NJ who loved this song. Every time I hear it I think of him. Unfortunately he took his life in March 2000. It still hurts.
@blueyedKSGirl Sorry to hear about that. It's an awful thing to have happen. The original guitarist in my band took his life about 8 years ago. He was wonderful, caring and helpful person. Doctor had him on meds for over twenty years for 'sleep disorder'. He couldn't deal with the side-effects anymore. He was a very talented guy. We miss him very much.
Mr. Carmen still has the best hair in rock, and seems quite fit even in his older age. And, I'd gladly still 'go all the way' with him and I am far from some desperate frumpy cow! :) cx
I LOVE ERIC CARMEN !!! He was the hottest rock star back then! Great voice and yes, PRETTY!! But then again, so were a lot of Rock Stars! It is so refreshing to see a time when people actually cared about their appearances! Nowadays everyone is a big fatass with greasy hair wearing the same old black t-shirt and staring at their shoes. No effort in appearance or performance. That is why rock is dead today!
@jadeo101 Hey Jadeo, don't be so jaded. Instead type your little fingers on your you tube keyboard and type in L.A. Ryder We're the Outcasts and hear some newly uncovered 70s and 80's music! Remember rock on with some spirit!
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
Wally ... you're right. I recall Carmen was actually classically trained and has a fine arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He's written some pretty outstanding pop/rock songs over the years, too! Cheers
Sorry all your Eric Carmen haters; that man NEVER had to wear a wig..best rock and roll hair ever...anyone around in the 70s knows this was our MTV and this is how lots of bands looked and dressed...I was 12 when this came out and just the idea of the song was AMAZING...also, Eric is on record saying that when he created this song, he wanted to see if he could write a hit with suggestive lyrics but deliver it in such a sweet way that you couldn't help but love it..Success..IMHO..
Wierd to me...how Eric could look so damn hot at times, and other times, really kind of bizarre looking. He lloks now like he's probably had some plastic surgery done...not that there's anything wrong with that...but look at pics of him in the 80's and early 90's...he did not have a face that would age well into his '60's
Eric Carmen and the Raspberries were single-handedly responsible for more deflowering/make outs during the 1970's than any chemical substance. Hands down Eric's was the greatest male singing voice of that decade....and he still sounds great!!
THIS IS FRICKIN HOT AND YES IT IS ERIC CARMEN. MAN, A MAN WOULD GO ALL THE WAY WITH HIM AFTER SEEING HIM SING THIS SONG. CRAP, A DOG WOULD!!! THATS HOW GOOD IT IS!!
@bookguitarguy Like men don't judge women on looks, weight, or a myriad of other things. Sorry for your bad luck with women, but guess what dude? You're the common denominator in all those relationships.
Love this 70's rock sound. Even though these guys seem to be lip-syncing this on the show...instruments, vocals, and all. Sounds just like the studio version. Yeah, the drummer is playing sorta lightly there. Regardless...still like 'em. The old tube amp sound ala Pete Townsend style guitar does it for me...(even though the singer is also maybe wearing a wig...not cool.) Like the music, not the fake? That's right...
@MrYou4ia They actually performed live on the show, which is elsewhere on youtube if you look for it. Someone just decided to overdub the studio recording on this video from the show.
gotta wnder given mike douglas' musical background, what he opened himself up to when this fantastic band appeared on his tv show...he probably had to give his regular audience a "warning"...prior to this segment :)
@Hto0h Maybe YouTube will let me get a way with a partial link: just add the usual stuff to this link. Great live version: youtube.com/watch?v=7wT_NpsYdes
@macsdounix Thank you. I'll check it. Ah, yes... that's live, but I think there is an extra player or two on stage. watch?v=hDbWRP_D_uw.... Thanks. :)
Contrary to people's idea of the 1970's today...there were actually ALOT of teenagers having sex and when this song came out we loved it. It was stating the obvious.
Folks, give Eric Carmena break. IT WAS THE 70s and believe it or not, this was a cool look back then. Just listen to that lead guitar and the harmonies. This is power pop at its best.
@wallytjr256 Very true!! I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that angry Feminists liked their "men" to look (and act?) more like girls than men!!! Now, they still want us to act like girls -but LOOK like men- while they take all of our money, jobs, and power!! But hey, that's a whole other subject... :O)) He's a great singer, singing a great song!
@bookguitarguy GOOD GOD! IT WAS THE 60ties REMEMBER A LITTLE GROUP CALLED THE BEATLES? WE ALL WANTED TO LOOK LIKE THEM. MAN YOU GOT A THING FOR WOMEN SHE IS NEVER GOING TO TAKE YOU BACK DEAL WITH IT.
@hacksaw8214 Oh, shut up dumbass. Just because ur a brainwashed radical feminist doesn't mean the rest of us buy the bullsh#t!! :O)) The Beatles had a boyish/innocent look, but they were not effeminate, & didn't try to look like women. I stand behind my statement: the feminist (hypocritical) swing from one extreme to the other (from macho to girly-men) taught a lot of women (& men) to not only hate MEN, but to hate MASCULINITY itself (though OK for dykes). Don't miss ur next counseling appt! :O)
@bookguitarguy LOOKED AT YOUR WEB SIGHT. WHAT YOU DID FOR BANDIT WAS A GOOD THING. BUT WOW, NO DOUBLE WOW! YOU HAVE A LOT OF ISSUES WITH FEMALES. THE ONLY ONE THAT CARES WHAT YOU THINK OR HOW YOU FEEL IS YOU! YOU ARE JUST MAKING YOUR OWN SELF CRAZY!
@wallytjr256 While I agree that this is power pop at its best, it's too hard to resist pointing out things like "last time I saw that haircut it was sitting on a styrofoam head in a shop window."
How come racism is wrong and supremicy beliefs over any group with males in the group, but when ONLY women/girls can get hurt it's suddenly ok to pimp hate in the form of misogyny anytime someone is homophobic & wants to insult men...they use misogyny. 'like a girl' etc...That's the depths of being a coward & of course any guy who thinks he has something to prove, knows he has something to hide. ..
This is in response to the often removed hatefilled comments about Eric.
@billyjack1973, They are actually dudes not chicks. But they do look like the singer, Prince. Raspberry Parade the kind U find in a second hand store.
Ya gotta love that 70's glam look. Its so much better than today's street/grundge look ( aka the homeless look ) No disrespect to the homeless, but nowadays its chic to look scruffy / scary in expensive clothes.
This was out when I was in high school.Ahh the good old days.

@jadeo101 ,,,,,,Very good observation Jade.

@jadeo101 Hey Jadeo, don't be so jaded. Instead type your little fingers on your you tube keyboard and type in L.A. Ryder We're the Outcasts and hear some newly uncovered 70s and 80's music! Remember rock on with some spirit!
junkyarddogmusic 2 months ago
@jadeo101 Your characterization of today's contemporary artist is accurate. Bring back Eric and his proud art form.
MRJBanks121 2 months ago
@MRJBanks121 But today's artists put so much EFFORT into looking unkempt. So, come on, cut them some slack (unless they're already 100% slack).

Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
robertoamor2011 3 months ago
Wally ... you're right. I recall Carmen was actually classically trained and has a fine arts degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He's written some pretty outstanding pop/rock songs over the years, too! Cheers

Sorry all your Eric Carmen haters; that man NEVER had to wear a wig..best rock and roll hair ever...anyone around in the 70s knows this was our MTV and this is how lots of bands looked and dressed...I was 12 when this came out and just the idea of the song was AMAZING...also, Eric is on record saying that when he created this song, he wanted to see if he could write a hit with suggestive lyrics but deliver it in such a sweet way that you couldn't help but love it..Success..IMHO..
jpodunk60 3 months ago 3
geez!! my dad's freinds all dressed...and looked like this!!!
exgroupiefromelmont1 4 months ago
Wierd to me...how Eric could look so damn hot at times, and other times, really kind of bizarre looking. He lloks now like he's probably had some plastic surgery done...not that there's anything wrong with that...but look at pics of him in the 80's and early 90's...he did not have a face that would age well into his '60's
minnabean33 4 months ago
Eric Carmen and the Raspberries were single-handedly responsible for more deflowering/make outs during the 1970's than any chemical substance. Hands down Eric's was the greatest male singing voice of that decade....and he still sounds great!!

@AMStationEngineer --yes and probably alot of single-handed stuff too!!

MrYou4ia 4 months ago
@MrYou4ia They actually performed live on the show, which is elsewhere on youtube if you look for it. Someone just decided to overdub the studio recording on this video from the show.

Contrary to people's idea of the 1970's today...there were actually ALOT of teenagers having sex and when this song came out we loved it. It was stating the obvious.
minnabean33 4 months ago
Great tune, but a little surprised that Mike would put this on back in '74, considering the blatant implication of sex at the time.

@JeffersonDinedAlone I thought the same.

Folks, give Eric Carmena break. IT WAS THE 70s and believe it or not, this was a cool look back then. Just listen to that lead guitar and the harmonies. This is power pop at its best.
wallytjr256 5 months ago 18
@wallytjr256 Very true!! I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that angry Feminists liked their "men" to look (and act?) more like girls than men!!! Now, they still want us to act like girls -but LOOK like men- while they take all of our money, jobs, and power!! But hey, that's a whole other subject... :O)) He's a great singer, singing a great song!
bookguitarguy 4 months ago
@bookguitarguy GOOD GOD! IT WAS THE 60ties REMEMBER A LITTLE GROUP CALLED THE BEATLES? WE ALL WANTED TO LOOK LIKE THEM. MAN YOU GOT A THING FOR WOMEN SHE IS NEVER GOING TO TAKE YOU BACK DEAL WITH IT.
hacksaw8214 4 months ago
@hacksaw8214 Oh, shut up dumbass. Just because ur a brainwashed radical feminist doesn't mean the rest of us buy the bullsh#t!! :O)) The Beatles had a boyish/innocent look, but they were not effeminate, & didn't try to look like women. I stand behind my statement: the feminist (hypocritical) swing from one extreme to the other (from macho to girly-men) taught a lot of women (& men) to not only hate MEN, but to hate MASCULINITY itself (though OK for dykes). Don't miss ur next counseling appt! :O)
bookguitarguy 4 months ago
@bookguitarguy LOOKED AT YOUR WEB SIGHT. WHAT YOU DID FOR BANDIT WAS A GOOD THING. BUT WOW, NO DOUBLE WOW! YOU HAVE A LOT OF ISSUES WITH FEMALES. THE ONLY ONE THAT CARES WHAT YOU THINK OR HOW YOU FEEL IS YOU! YOU ARE JUST MAKING YOUR OWN SELF CRAZY!
hacksaw8214 4 months ago
@wallytjr256 Yeah, it was ok to use more hairspray than your girlfriend back then.
YaniT991 3 months ago
@wallytjr256 While I agree that this is power pop at its best, it's too hard to resist pointing out things like "last time I saw that haircut it was sitting on a styrofoam head in a shop window."
Salguine 3 months ago
How come racism is wrong and supremicy beliefs over any group with males in the group, but when ONLY women/girls can get hurt it's suddenly ok to pimp hate in the form of misogyny anytime someone is homophobic & wants to insult men...they use misogyny. 'like a girl' etc...That's the depths of being a coward & of course any guy who thinks he has something to prove, knows he has something to hide. ..
This is in response to the often removed hatefilled comments about Eric.
