  • WORD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lynchburg tx, is named after Nathaniel lynch. Who founded the town by having a ferry there called lynch's ferry. Not for any reason other than that. But thats not saying I don't respect this guy or poem. Its moving and its very true things that happened in the past were both profound and terrible. Just saying

  • I wonder how he feels about the lench mob

  • ...he needs to go to a day spa and relax a bit. Life isn't that bad.

  • @Itpours he's breathing life into his poetry,it wouldn't have the same impact if he was relaxed.

  • Inspirational teacher I was one of his students when he thought in Denton high school

  • I'm from the San Joaquin Valley and I never knew the history of the name or any history of the valley at all.

  • @trina1126 The San Joaquin valley is not named after Joaquin Murrieta it is named after SAN JOAQUIN or in English SAINT JOACHIM who was the father of Mary, the mother of Jesus!

  • This sent shivers all up and down my spine.

  • Joaquin is one of the most powerful and intense poets/storytellers I've ever heard or seen perform before. His work always has a way of opening your eyes, heart and mind to situations that are usually overlooked. And even in person he is one of the funniest yet real people you will ever met. Joaquin keep up the good work!

  • Intense

  • this is STRONG. i'll always be proud of where i came from, and although there are many problems still within society...and people will always be people...there is kind.and i'm just holding on to that hope.and i'm glad that although we seem to be going backwards in many aspects..we have yet come far.

  • he cute

  • @msraymond

    thats not the point..

  • @funnychuckles i know that's not the point of him being cute. I understand his poem about hispanic pride

  • Joauin is a phenomenal poet, he came to University of Northern Colorado last week for the Latino Youth Conference and did an astonishing job!

  • i actually had Joaquin (Mr. Z) as my English teacher through out my of my high school time. He was funny as hell, and an amazing teacher. I still have the signed poetry book he made my senior year.

  • @WatDaStreetsCreated

it's not about gettong on top...it's about equality.that's what this whole struggle has been about.

  • I saw him last night at my college. This guy is awesome!

  • unt i presume?

  • I like this...

  • he was my english teacher back in high school!!!! he used to perform in class

  • JZ is da man, saw him last night at Fresh Cafe in Honolulu.... Stop hatin!

  • I find this odd because his name isn't Joaquin. It is Dale.

On top of that, the entire premise of this poem is historically flawed and based on the myths, legends, and fictionalized accounts of Joaquin Murietta.

  • Yea, a real poet...

  • wow. this gave me shivers.

  • Very good performance JZ.... see you in Dallas.

  • this man is amazing. I've seen him perform a couple times @ the Embargo Bar-Downtown Ft. Worth TX. They have open mic poetry every Tuesday night & I've become so inspired by him. I got the chance to actually meet him this past Tuesday @ the Embargo & bought one of his cd's. Pure truth, honesty, laughter, & soul! And it doesn't hurt he's Latino 2 like me :)

  • damnnnnnn

    amazing piece

  • There's a Lynchburg in Virginia too...I flinch everytime I hear the name slip between someone's lips. It's a shameful day when it's 2009 and we still gotta see, hear of, or associate ourselves with Lynch-ANYTHING.

obviously, that's not the only thing i got from his piece. it was breathtaking and admirable. and it's a shame that THESE aren't the stories we get to hear about in our history classes.

  • Lynchburg Virginia was named after the city's founder John Lynch not after the act of Lynchings. Lynch was and is a common last name and just because Lynch (v) was named for a man with the last name Lynch who did terrible things doesn't mean every time you meat someone with the last name Lynch you should immediately assume that they want to hang all black people.

  • if you wanna talk semantics you are correct. what you failed to mention is that john was charles' cousin. chalres lynch being a judge the one whom is credited with the "lynch laws" so relatively speaking you are wrong.

  • @garagebandking13 You're right. The practice of lynching was named after Charles Lynch, his brother.

    ♥,

    shelbz

  • @garagebandking13

everyone is assuming that he meant it literally.there is also figurative and irony.

  • Lynchburg, VA was named after John Lynch, it's founder.

  • @ludicrouslyCOOL YES, not alot of people know that there is a Lynchburg, Va and the way I found out was I was doing college apps and I applied and got into Lynchburg College that it really occured to me the name of the school and where it was. Though I went to the school for a visit, the school paid, I couldnt shake the feeling that I really wasnt wanted there and so when it was done I got outa there. And though I'm not black, native american, I get chills over that name and I'll never go back.

  • @ludicrouslyCOOL

I agree, to hear stuff like this is why me and my friends are trying to get ethnic studies in our schools. So we can hear more of REAL relevant history . u knw ?

  • HAHAHAH OMG This guy used to be my fuckin english teacher OMG i had no Idea why he quit this i powerful

    Denton Texas Stand Up

  • Yep...I'll never forget him reading The Crucible to our class....emphasizing the line "BECAUSE IT IS MY NAME!"....

  • An extraordinary and emotional peice.

  • I have seen Joaquin perform live in Greensboro when he won a poetry slam. He is so awesome! I love his performances and wish there were more of his videos online!

  • YES!!! I was there at the Freedom... man oh man he was fantastic!!!

  • I love this piece.

  • amazing.I didn't know that history, but I feel you.

  • I live in Lynchburg. Our town was named after Lynch's Ferry, which is named after Nathaniel Lynch in 1822. I would check your history.

  • and how do you think Mr. Nathaniel begot that last name???

  • Im sure that is what they told you...however as we all know...America does like to cover up it mistakes....So check your history. Beautiful Piece BTW!

  • beautiful

  • An amazing poet and teacher.

  • this is just a history lesson, not a stellar piece of writing

  • i know this man personally. i go over to his house all the time.

he's one of the most incredible people i've ever met.

  • (: <3

    I agree with Ryce.

I use to go over all the time when I was younger, and he's such an amazing man. I'm so happy that his writing is finally making a name for him.

  • U too??

  • I had the awesome pleasure of meeting Joaquin in Dallas, he came to my school during literary week, and I ran into him again at an open mic. He got to see me read which was also an experience i will never forget. he's truly an amazing poet.

  • Saw Joaquin in the Art Bar in Downtown Dallas when it was still up and running. Amazing poet.

  • Handle Your Bizz Homie, pERFECTLY sAID

  • Que Viva La Raza!!! Back in 2006 historians say Joaquin Murrieta died in the city of Huron California; were i was raised and very proud of.

  • I saw him at Philadelphia. He is amazing, I don't think I blinked during the 15 minutes of life changing energy he performed with.
