Julian Assange speech, New Statesman/Frontline Club debate

First thing I notice is that, unlike Mr Assange, Douglas Murray (or for that matter, anyone else on the stage that day) did not get up and try and talk over someone else while they were making their speech.

Obviously, Mr Assange is "special", and some of the rules do not apply to him.

I think Assange did well to cite historical examples as well as recent developments to defend his position. He also clarified several times that he was not against secrecy on the whole. Comparatively, Murray's argument came across as a bit petty because he was so bent on undermining the character of the whistle-blower instead of elaborating on instances of direct harm.

There is a degree of self-righteous smuggery about Julian Assange. There is a need sometimes for someone to blow the whistle, but as Douglas Murray has allueded to- context would be good. Why is it always the UK and America that are the devil and wicked, when in Russia under Putin, if you dare to voice disageement or blow the whistle, you are likely to pay a severe penalty and possibly with your life. It is very comfortable to be a self-righteous whistle-blower in the West. So very comfortable.
