Butler sure was involved with a lot of wackiness that 2009-10 season. This game and of course being an inch away on that half court shot from winning the National Title.
he let go of the ball at 00:50 seconds left on the stopwatch, the ball went in at :05, so basically he made it with a half a second to go.....pause the video when Hayword releases the ball, not when it goes it
If you slow down clocks - Dan on Streets clock seems to start at 19:06 yet game clock underneath looks like it reads 19:0 - How are we sure they are EXACT starting times??
I mean .05 either way is way is sooooo close. Regardless I still think the tie up call was quickest and worst I have ever seen. Would love to have seen how Sir Bobby Knight would have acted if he'd been in Chris Macks spot.
@snagmasterx37 How do you know? I guess you can know because "the tenths place" on each clock turns over on the same frame. When a clock goes, for instance, from 19.1 to 19.0, at the instant of the change, a clock that keeps an additional spot goes from 19.10 to 19.09 by mathematical definition.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, unless you're seeing a different tenth of a second on each clock at any one moment, you're seeing the exact same time on each clock.
This is a bad call because the players are operating under the impression that the time on the clock is right! It's ridiculous, refs should never be able to decide a game like that!
while it may be true that it ended up being a "buzzer beater" the fact is butler was the home team and is responsible for controlling the clock. Why should Xavier be punished for the mistakes of Butler officials? They should have given X 1.2 seconds, which would have been plenty of time (ex Xavier v. Virginia Tech last year) if you dont know what im referring to look it up its a great watch. Plus after all that the officiating was the worst I've ever seen over the last 30secs or so of the game
The best part is definitely when Jordan "IU drop out" Crawford falls down with about 6 seconds left on the stopwatch clock, and watches the play develop from the ground out of bounds under the bucket.
@hall0302 Please, give credit where credit is due. Butler made that play happen during the scramble. Butler earned the win with that scramble(although I completely disagree with the horrible jump ball call). Also, right before this play Crawford hit a deep fade away to take the lead. These were two great teams as evidenced by the NCAA tourney
Not a fan of either team. Watched the game. Officials got it completely right. And after the way the Xavier players acted after the game, they deserved to lose. What a bunch of punks. I used to kinda admire their little b-ball program but now I'm just embarrassed for them. The one Xavier dude looked like he was picking a fight with some old lady. Classy.
@mplebanon.i didn't think so at the time but the officials were right. and xavier does seem to have it's share of thugs, i was suprised. between the roughness on the court and the little outburst afterwards. i guess they also trashed some stuff at butler. they should get some punishment from the ncaa
@mplebanon Not defending the Xavier players actions after the game, but I know for a fact that many in the Butler crowd were calling Xavier players some pretty harsh names to get a reaction like they did...
@brrrdman85 That's what the clock operator thought happened but clock operators don't get to make calls. There's nothing "clear" about a backcourt violation on this play. I'm not a graduate or fan of either side, by the way. I was just looking for an answer to the clock issue yesterday afternoon.
Dan, take your stopwatch back to the 1 minute mark. When Crawford's shot clears the basket at 47.8 seconds, the clock continues to run until 46.2 seconds. There would be at least 1.2 seconds after the Butler layup.
I understand what you mean but that's an issue that speaks to imprecise clock management at moments when it is actually appropriate for time to be stopped and started again. Those issues would have to be addressed at the time they occur.
What makes the issue at the end of the game noteworthy was the improper stoppage of the clock in the middle of a possession.
Basically it's a difference of imprecise vs. improper.
@brrrdman85 in order to have a "clear" backcourt violation you actually have to have posession of the ball, which butler obviously did not because it was tipped into the backcourt.
@sutton30830 For the record, I didn't pause it when he releases the ball because it's obvious that he got it off in plenty of time. The pause as it goes through the net is to show how much time would be on the clock for an inbounds play: 5 hundredths of a second at best. No time for another play.
@dansheldon00 i know, im just replying to the person who said that the refs missed a call because it was a "clear backcourt violation." obviously he just doesn't know what hes talking about.
Wow, give the refs their props. I get on them when they fail, but in this case, given the rotten circumstances, they did a great job to make the right call.
BTW, Great job on the clock and GREAT VIDEO POST DANSHELDON00.

dan on the streets clock is definitely off, but the game clock, which is kinda blury, but it still shows that the layup was in time

well... I guess Xavier should have made a few more free throws and this would have been a moot point.

@snagmasterx37 sportscenter did it accurately, and hayward released it with 0.4 left on the real game clock, and the ball went in as time expired.

You are absolutely right,,,,,Freeze the frame at 16.95 and you can see the ball clearly hitting the court - before Jackson touches it!!
