I'm not sure if a hate crime bill makes it "more of a crime" to kill gays/lesbians. Ideally, yes, it would be great if all people were treated fairly and with equal justice, but the reality is that there really are target communities/identities who face much more discrimination because they are minorties and because of their identities.
TYT has every right under the 1st amendment to disagree with Christians but proposed hate crime legislation would limit the 1st amendment rights of Christians to state their beliefs. Hate crime legislation makes it more of a crime to kill a homosexual than a heterosexual person or a minority than a white person. Hate crime legislation isnt the solution. Fair and equal justice is.

Mickety2001 is right. America was never a Christian country. Thomas Jefferson basically wrote the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson himself paved the way for seperation of church and state. Now it's in the first Amendment of the Constitution. If this were an actual Christian nation, we wouldn't have seperation of church and state, nor would we have the amendment to allow other religions to be practiced with equal status.

The words 'faith' and 'science' both come from the same etymological stem of 'to know'. I hit him so hard he probably felt it for a month. His two friends jumped in, but quickly regretted that decision. That afternoon the officer investigating the case came by my office and threatened to pursue a hate crime charge because they are black and I am white.

I've followed the development of hate crime legislation since 1989. Before hate crime entered the law, a racially-motivated assault was reported as just "assault", the meaning was lost. Now we can identify and track these crimes to enact legal protections against discrimination. The differential sentencing came later, I don't like it, but if it puts convicted offenders where their antisocial impulses can be discovered, recorded, and addressed, then it's doing what we set out to do.

no one gets persecuted for saying something, unless it promotes hateful and harmful actions. Same goes for the what is a hate crime, it s a crime that pushes more violent actions against a certain group of people.

Sexual orientation does not only refer to Gays. STRAIGHT people have a sexual orientation too. If people kill or attack somebody because s/he is STRAIGHT, they would be persecuated just the same as someone attacking someone who is GAY. I don't see how the hate crime bill with sexual orientation written in it only favors gays.

Have you ever seen a gay hate crime against a heterosexual? Hate crimes comited to gays commited by straights happen around the world still much too often. And anyway, the bill is against HATE crimes, not only crimes on homosexuals.

I'm not sure if a hate crime bill makes it "more of a crime" to kill gays/lesbians. Ideally, yes, it would be great if all people were treated fairly and with equal justice, but the reality is that there really are target communities/identities who face much more discrimination because they are minorties and because of their identities.

TYT has every right under the 1st amendment to disagree with Christians but proposed hate crime legislation would limit the 1st amendment rights of Christians to state their beliefs. Hate crime legislation makes it more of a crime to kill a homosexual than a heterosexual person or a minority than a white person. Hate crime legislation isnt the solution. Fair and equal justice is.

Speaking out of homosexuals is not a hate crime. I think hate crime legislation for gays and lesbians implies actions, not words. Christian or not, why wouldn't people want the U.S. to protect all people, regardless of their identity, from harm and violence and punish those who harm them?

@vasquez87 According to my reading of interpretations of the 2009 federal hate crime bill, law enforcement could charge a person with a hate crime if that person were to express hatred against a random member of that group.
Only a verbal expression of hatred is necessary. According to many if I express my Christian belief that homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God then I am saying that God hates homosexuals and therefore I have committed a hate crime.
