I guess her parents have both been harlequin danes? In Germany it is not allowed to breed with two harlequins. The harlequin color comes from the merle-gen. But when a puppy gets a merle-gen from the father AND the mother that often causes blindness, deafness and deformations.

Okay, as an animator, I tend to hunt for the unusual and curious when dealing with animals because cute quirks are things that I A) love because they ARE cute, and B) because I do not understand/know enough about it to make it a viable option in actually animating. Since my Leo is an intelligent hearing dog, I can safely base a canid animal after his responses for the most part but I have never had an animal in my care that could not hear. I have a Dane who is deaf as well! I rescued him in SoCal, renamed him Tiberius and taught him hand signals! He's "great"!! And I think, perfect!! I also have another Merlequin Dane, rescued her as well, renamed Kalliope! She has perfect hearing!! First time owning Danes, will never own another breed!! They're wonderful!!

@AsterBarnivere I have two Great Danes who look exactly like that! With clear, ice blue eyes, one is deaf and one has perfect hearing. I rescued them both and it was explained to me that due to bad breeding, all Danes who are deaf will 100% be white based with blue eyes. If you have a white Dane with blue eyes, it is over a 95% that the Dane will be deaf. Deaf dogs are wonderful!! Tiberius has a dog tag that states, "Deaf dogs hear with their heart!", and an image of a Merelquin Dane!

@princecastillo1 I do! Hand signals/body language. I'm a dog trainer &honestly, it's easier that she's deaf! It's not like we share a common language, or dogs are born understanding English anyway. The only time I wish she could hear is when I want to verbally motivate/encourage her, excite her, or praise her verbally a whole bunch for being so lovely :).
