Actually, although the late, great Nat King Cole recorded it, it was originally a wordless tune written in France, in 1947.

Pianist Roger Williams was the first to record it. The lyrics were later written in 1955 by Johnny Mercer. It made it an even bigger hit. Then Nat recorded it.
