REGINA PACINI DE ALVEAR (* January 6th of 1871 , Lisbon , Portugal - † September 18 of 1965 , Buenos Aires , Argentina ) was a light lyric soprano , First Lady of Argentina and Portuguese benefactor of Italian descent who married the Argentine political Marcelo T. Alvear of the UCR.
Daughter of baritone Pietro Pacini Italian and Spanish Felisa Quinteros was born in Lisbon during the regency of his father's Teatro San Carlos in Lisbon .
He studied in Paris with Mathilde Marchesi and debuted in 1888 as Amina in La sleepwalker of Bellini. As soprano was an important exponent of the bel canto of the time, as Lucia di Lammermoor, La Boheme , I Puritani , Rigoletto , Manon and Rosina in The Barber of Seville sang in the Liceo in Barcelona,the Scala of Milan, the Paris Opera and the Covent Garden Lucia de Lammermoor with Enrico Caruso .
In 1899 he debuted at the Teatro Solis in Montevideo and the Politeama Theatre of Buenos Aires where he met Marcelo T. Alvear who followed in different theaters of the world.
In 1907 she married Dr. Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear , future president of Argentina from 1922-28, retiring from acting and became a major benefactor. During the First World War the couple lived in Paris and his actions earned him the Legion of Honor by the French government.
In 1938 he founded the House Theatre of Buenos Aires, a haven for actors like the House Verdi in Milan, with 45 rooms, two small museums and the headquarters of Regina Theatre named in his honor. Also built the Temple of San Marcelo and the College Annex.
He lived in Villa Regina , his home in Mar del Plata and Villa Elvira in Don Torcuato . Widowed in 1942 and when he died at age 94 survived on a modest national pension. Nothing was left of his fortune, distributed in charity.
