@gabsylv I removed my comment because I realized that the improv comments were about the second version. I didn't realize when I had commented that this video included both. haha. My apologies. But yes. Durang wrote the 1st round and Robin Williams improvised the 2nd
My God !! This is the comedic genius that is Robin Williams. I watched the first segment and had a smile and a chuckle. Then in the second segment when Robin came back and did it the way he would, I laughed till my sides ached. You can see by Carols eyes she's holding back. Pure genius !!
If Robin Williams was a regular on The Carol Burnett Show, I don't think Harvey Korman would had made it with both Tim Conway and Robin in the same skit
Hilarious doesn't describe this. I miss the old comedy, back when in the day when LOL really meant Laughing Out Loud. Hit the Like if you really did LOL
I loved the early Robin. He guest starred on a lot of great comedies of the day, that was just before he began "Mork and Mindy", which was just about the beginning of his career. Seems if I recall correctly, he guest starred as the alien shot down in an egg on "Happy Days", which was the beginning of his own show. Sure loved the shows of those days. Thanks for sharing.
He seems so natural and spontaneous. Either he prepared well for this or he is truly a comedic genious. Would've made a terrific regular on this show. So would Steve Martin.
@slmacph He is a true comedic genius. They did this several times and never the same way twice from Robin. Carol was just about lost! He's just so off the wall and crazy that he's nearly impossible to keep up with.
Williams doesn't need a script. But whoever he's working with in the moment might need to turn away and try to conceal the laughter that is trying very hard to erupt.
i SO remember this! This is from the special: "Carol,Carl,Whoopi&Robin" right? if so, i LOVED the sketch with Carol & Whoopi where Carol is the mom & Whoopi her daughter & Carol asks Whoopi,"Where are you going?" Whoopi as her teen daughter replies,"Out." "Out where?" "Outside." Too funny! they need to put the special on DVD. :)
@DrSimian - I love Christopher Durang's plays. I was in 2 of them in High School - The Actor's Nightmare and 'dentity Crisis. Another group of students did The Baby with the Bathwater which is one of his funniest shows.
i can control my laughter. but at 1 minute i have completely lost it. laughing soooooo damnnn hard. Robin Williams, carol Burnet, what a hell of a comedy team lmaoooooooooooo
There is no way that I could have kept a straight face if I were Carol. This also applies to Archie Campbell's "Pfft You Was Gone" skits on Hee Haw. He never so much as cracked a smile while spouting off those hilarious lines.
I wish I could get this special on DVD: It's called "Carol, Carl, Whoopi, and Robin." Carol Burnett, Carl Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, and of course, ROBIN.

our high school is doing this skit for our theater competition! :) and my two favorite actors just happen to be doing this Robin Williams and Carol Burnett. :)
@daddydragon17 Have you possibly found anywhere since w/the mother/daughter skit you mention? For many, many moons I've been looking for a skit w/Whoopi & Carol, where one is old & senile, and the daughter sings a song to her. I remember it from when I was very little, and I'd looove to find it again. Thank you so much!
I wonder has anyone of CB funs seen & can post vid of Caroll Burnett show the day after last episode of MASH with Henry Blake when McLean Stevenson said "Im OK! Im OK!" pleeeaasee:) I can't believe it.
we're doing this play at school. i'm playing Marcus, and boy, this has been inspirational. now i know in which direction to take this eccentric character.
Anyone who has ever been part of a theatre group must know how hard it is to keep a straight face especially when you don't know what to expect. Robin is just fantastic here! So creative!!!! And Carol is unbelievable!
Thank you for posting...wondering if I can get original source...I have searched and talked about this for years as one of the funniest skits in TV history...I remembered that it continued though with Robin Williams keeping the camera rolling and going employing an accent resulting ultimately in Carol collapsing on the casket, trying to not look like she was laughing and sliding down the casket to the floor....
Robin's performance here...his tone of voice is VERY close to his Mrs. Doubtfire voice hehehe how cool to hear it long before the movie ever was made :)
A phrase to always keep in reserve for those special occasions..."It's alright, he's keening." As far as not losing it, she's had years of practice with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman.
@knoxvilleguy2 It may well be from "Carol & Company," a later show (that I loved but that didn't last long) that was on from 1990-91. Carol & a repertory troupe -- including Swoosie Kurtz and Richard Kind -- would do a different half-hour scene every week, often with dramatic elements. The fact that this clip is 10 minutes long also suggests it was from that show, since her original show didn't usually have such long pieces.
I could watch the out takes and the Q&A's all the time! I think they must have had the longest lay overs for a live audience in Television City history! They said that one of the longest laughs was the Gone With The Wind spoof with Carol and Harvey, Carol with the drapes. There was also an episode with Tim sitting on the huge door knob. Can anyone give me a suggestion on what collection to look for, I would love to have these on DVD!
This was a special on ABC around '87 with these 2 and Carl Reiner....BUT THERE WAS MORE! This skit continued. They end up back on the couch with more of Robin's improv and Carol's responses, all brilliant. I think they sing "Everything's Coming Up Roses"...
"aaaaaaAaaAAaAAaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!" as Robin Williams starts laughing at 5:32. hahahahahahaha And then at 5:35 he says WHOA! when she bursts out again. Hilarious!!!!
it is really impressive if you consider that Robin Williams was really new to TV then, so it wasn't as if she'd seen years of him using material like that.
What's amazing is how C can keep a straight face through most of R's improvised jokes. That takes true professionalism!
