And I really have to wonder where anyone got 'The Egyptians didn't care about this until 75 years ago'? Of course they did, but you can't always protect what you care about, if you plan to feed your family, or hell.. survive in some cases.
So as long as you're the one that found it, it's yours, no matter what? Wow.. That leaves SO many loopholes for thieves. I dislike the flailing obnoxious archeologist on a MASSIVE level, but I agree that these artifacts do belong in a museum in Egypt, with the option for other museums to borrow them for periods of time. If they can't keep up the museum without an entry fee, then that's what it takes. You have to think of the resources some have that others don't. Free isn't always an option.
It sounds like stealing to me. The English stole the stone from Napoleon after he had stolen it from Egypt. No matter how you look at it, the stone rightfully belongs to the Egyptians. I think It is time for the robbers to apologize & to give it back to the Egyptians.
Hawass wants the stuff to come back....but he KNOWS some of it was SOLD off. Egyptians didn't give a crap about this stuff until about 75 years or so ago.
If one might visit the Cairo Museum, he could see for himself the bad condition in which the ancient artifacts are held.
In any possible situation - I prefer that the heritage of humanity (and not yours Mr. Hawas) will be guarded as safely as it is today in the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum and in Berlin.
they want keep them in museums because people pay to go see them...bottom line...give them back to the land from where they came...

I agree with the sentiments but does this add anything to the discussion...
Egyptian museums cost up to $100 entrance fees.
