My favorite part of the Heron Island experience, and I could go on for pages, was the outdoor dining. It is under a roof and just like a regular restaurant, except that the exterior walls are made of netting to keep out the birds. Little Buff Banded Rails kept sneaking in to beg in a peeping voice for food. So adorable. I can't recommend Heron Island enough. I am DEFINITELY going back someday. I also recommend Silky Oaks Lodge in the Daintree rain forest.
When I first arrived at Heron Island I wanted to leave. It was because of all the wildlife on the island. (It smelled wild.) Oddly after a few hours I didn't want to leave at all. It was because of all the wildlife on the island :)
One morning I saw a turtle at Heron Island that was only a few feet from the beach at low tide and looked like she was having trouble getting back in the ocean. I went to the visitor's center to tell them she needed help and the young man smiled very nicely and said she'd be fine. Then he said somethig to the effect that tourists get nervous for the turtles all the time, as if I was not a tourist myself. I walked back and she'd gone (the turtle). I felt so silly.
Last year at heron I saw at least 15 turtles lay there eggs. At one of them the 'today show' was taping it and I managed to get into the clip. It was an awesome experience.
