TO SET THE GODDAMN RECORD STRAIGHT.....Mike Portnoy is NOT Avenged Sevenfold's new drummer. He promised to record on Nightmare and drum on tour strictly til the end of 2010 and that's it. He is in neither band at this point and though A7X has yet to release the identity of their new temporary touring drummer, it is NOT Portnoy. Check the fucking website. Also, Portnoy did not leave DT to be in A7X. It was something he'd been thinking about for a year before he left.

@crueman666 I know that alot of the Rev's demo's were used in the album's songs, but Mike filled in alot of the holes. Funny thing is, the Rev was working on the guitar tracks first when he wrote Welcome to the Family, so while the riff is all Rev, the ENITRE song's drum track is a Mike Portnoy original.
@crueman666 Although as a DT fan I'm upset with Mike, I've heard two arguments that contradict each other... "God he sucks as a drummer" and "Damn what a kickass riff, too bad he didn't write it". The problem with that is that he's playing it perfectly. It's like hating a football play because it's not by your team. It's still great. And he plays it great. It's hard to hear with your head, and not your heart in this one.... Rev will be missed.
@aakkoin with that simple technique mp has pretty much wrote the book as far as metal fills are concerned. the whole 4 on top 2 on the bottom sorta thing.

You're right that there are drummers out there that smoke Portnoy and he would be the first to admit it but he is not a mediocre drummer in the professional sense and he can play anything he puts his mind to. Synyster Gates is an extremely sick guitarist and is brilliant, check out the song SideWinder, a perfect display of their diverse musical styles and overall talents,especially the ending which you idiots clearly seem to miss.

@playNsleep I'd highly suggest that you check them out. There newest album is okay, but Images and Words, Train of Thought and Octavarium are probably my favorites.
But they take some getting used to, as most of their songs are veeery long.

@crueman666 I know that alot of the Rev's demo's were used in the album's songs, but Mike filled in alot of the holes. Funny thing is, the Rev was working on the guitar tracks first when he wrote Welcome to the Family, so while the riff is all Rev, the ENITRE song's drum track is a Mike Portnoy original.

@crueman666 Although as a DT fan I'm upset with Mike, I've heard two arguments that contradict each other... "God he sucks as a drummer" and "Damn what a kickass riff, too bad he didn't write it". The problem with that is that he's playing it perfectly. It's like hating a football play because it's not by your team. It's still great. And he plays it great. It's hard to hear with your head, and not your heart in this one.... Rev will be missed.

@aakkoin man i like all them bands, i can play clone by gojira on drums, yeah sure there are way better drummers than mike but no one has been as influential as he has in the last 10 or so years, hes a great lyricist and song writer to. i hope your taking about a7x when you say posers, not dream theater. a7x suck. dream theater are awesome. listen to opeth for some creative death metal

@aakkoin I've been listening to Dream Theater for 18 years and I am not going to let a troll like you talk shit on Mike Portnoy because he was doing a relatively simple drum lick to fit Nightmare. He has done some incredible work over the years and only a retard would run his stupid head about Mike's playing. When you've been inducted into the Drummer's Hall of Fame like he has let us all know.

@aakkoin Look man, I'm sorry for being so harsh and I shouldn't have called you names. You're right that there are drummers out there that smoke Portnoy and he would be the first to admit it but he is not a mediocre drummer in the professional sense and he can play anything he puts his mind to. I think Marco Minneman is twice as good but when it comes to musicality and great fills Portnoy has been a driving force behind DT and their music is incredible.

Okay people stop dissing A7X, they're probably more friggen talented then you'll ever be, if you don't like them shut the hell up. No I'm not a normal, hardcore A7X fan, My favorite band here Is Dream Theater,or may not know, is a really talented band it wasn't just Jimmy. Synyster Gates is an extremely sick guitarist and is brilliant, check out the song SideWinder, a perfect display of their diverse musical styles and overall talents,especially the ending which you idiots clearly seem to miss.

well i cant really comment much on dream theatre because i dont listen to them and ive only really research on mike and the lead guitarist syn gates and matt shadows from avenged sevenfold are both unique artists but the other 2 are indeed average and because i dont kno much about dream theatre i will have to say they are on the same level of talent or above a7x

@playNsleep I'd highly suggest that you check them out. There newest album is okay, but Images and Words, Train of Thought and Octavarium are probably my favorites.
But they take some getting used to, as most of their songs are veeery long.
