Every song this man did was at his best. But!!!! if you want to hear this man hit notes not other man has ever hit..listen to him sing "Don"t worry". He's an icon.
Sorry tarquin 45. You're wrong. Marty Robbins is the favorite of millions of fans around the world. His records have sold millions. He was the first country artist to cross over to pop.
Any singer who has sang with more heart, soul, depth and feeling than this gentleman I don't know and I've heard just about all of them/thanks again Tarq
According to what I've read, this song was written in 1833. There was a duet of this song sung by Jo Stafford and a man whose name escapes me at the moment. That version was beautiful, and Marty Robbins and Elvis Presley were probably both familiar with it, since that version was highly acclaimed. Quite a few versions exist---or at least they did, long, long ago.
What a beautiful song, Marty must have been a very sentimental and passionate person, only someone who has such deep feelings could sing with so much
meaning, how this man has not been recognised as one the 20th centuries greatest singers is beyond me, I am sure many others feel the same way. Thank you so much Tarquin, you really are amazing with how you are helping to keep this wonderful man's memory alive.
Hi there Tarquin, long, long ago sinds I mailt you,but every day I listen and watch the beautiful clips of Marty that you post on youtube.Thank you for being such a great fan of Marty and for posting all these wonderful and beautiful songs of this great man that ever walked among us.I wish you all the best and a great health for you and your dear ones.Greatings from the Netherlands.
i agree! with a voice of pure gold, he made music come alive, no matter what he sang. love all his songs and love all your posts too tarquin. my no. 1 favorite singer.
The so called top country singers of today couldn't hold a candle to him.The ones that are in the top 10 wouldn't get there on just their voices, they need the well produced videos to sell their music.thanks for posting.
@almxx I agree but it's funny, Martin never put himself in a 'catagory'...he mostly loved the love songs and the cowboy songs....and even more, he just loved to sing. When he first started singing in Arizona, he sang under an alias because he was ahamed for his mother to know he was a singer. He worshipped his mom (Cigarettes and Coffee Blues was written about her after his father ran off). After a while, he started recording under the name of Marty Robbins (real name Robinson). Best singer!
love it . i have watched the black and white video with marty bobby and don where bobby and don played a sheriff and his depputy. it was from the drifter series i think but this beautiful also. thank u tarquin. would u be willing to copy the drifter series for me if u have it? i would defray costs,
Thanks Richard for your most gracious comments. This is my favourite Marty Robbins track without doubt. The rendition of this exquisite old ballad always moves me as well.
How sad that it was locked away in the vaults of Columbia records and never saw the light of day in Marty's lifetime.
Thanks once again for your kind and sincere comment.
Howdy tarquin45! Shamelessly, I had tears in my eyes from start to end. Never heard it before, but if I had golden nugget I'd send it to you gladly for posting it. I'm 65 and guess I've seen much of the dark side of life as well as a bit of its shining way, but this song has it all and I'll just elect it my most fav one among my entire collection.
I wish I'd be a poet or a musician to answer back, but helplessly I can't turn to anything else but my heart endlessly echoing back THANKS& GOD BLESS
A truly beautiful song. It was ,I think written by Thomas Haynes Bayley (1797-1839) Wonder how many of today's songs will stand the same test of time ?
This is my favourite Marty Robbins recording of all time. This was him at his greatest, just the guitar of Grady Martin accompanying him and a very beautiful old song sung with such sincerity and feeling. He had a way with a song that very few could match in my opinion. Thanks kallisann.
Clavier35, you are so lucky in a way, to have only come across the great Marty Robbins music recently, because Marty had so many great songs you will have a fantastic time finding and listening to them. Treat yourself to Marty's "Devil Woman" CD, It's the only Album by any singer, that I liked every song on it. I have been a huge fan since I first heard him in the 50's, and his songs never grow old. Have fun.
In fact barry I had noticed the quality of his voice when "Devil woman" was a hit in UK
Long after I have again recognize the music when CD were pressed with compilations from the past and again some years after with Youtube, I have search "devil woman" to see if some forgotten songs could however be found ...and discover that the name of the singer was an american named Robbins ....
Thanks countryvet. If I had just one record on a desert island it would be this record. Absolutely scandalous it was never released. It is such a beautiful reading of a very old song that I'm sure people would have latched on and made it a big, big hit.
Clavier35, I have every intention of putting as many Marty Robbins songs on youtube as I can. Thanks for your appreciation of one of the greatest voices of all time and taking the trouble to comment. It makes my day!
Tarquin 45.....The song 'Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree' borrows heavily from this melody. I don't think it has been recorded that often although I seem to recall a Dean Martin/Nat King Cole duet and also a version by Tennessee Ernie Ford. Marty sang the song in one of his 'Drifter' TV shows, but Columbia Records never released the recording in his lifetime. It first surfaced on Bear Family Records in an album called 'Just Me And My Guitar.'

I totally agree with your comment jshalom. I don't think he really achieved the recognition or record sales his undoubted talents deserved.

something about the vocals here sounds similar to early elvis. was there some earlier vocalist that both marty & elvis cited as an inspiration?

very gentle piece ~ four stars because:
use of European pictures are out of place and time. √isuals might have worked better with strictly American old timey pics.
Thanks for doing the video, don't get me wrong.!!
