The local resident mice would tear your "mercifully released mouse" to shreds the moment they noticed its presence. my buddy built one of these at hunting camp last year and we caught 7 mice in one night, 4 the next, then 1 the third night..........no more mice problems in camp. it works great!!!!

Its not deep enough to drown it ..there is belly deep water in there to keep it from jumping..I have a set up like this that feeds my snakes very well...=)
If the person has a pet cat or dog then simply drowning the mouse does make sense. If you use some kind of toxic chemical and the mouse either gets out, or the dumb cat/dog gets into the container themselves then they may wind up being killed as well.
As for why the person uses this kind of trap as opposed to a traditional trap; it's probably because you can catch multiple mice at a time, whereas with the spring loaded trap it will maybe catch one mouse.

I had two mice running through my basement last night, so i created two of these. Managed to catch one in a shoe box but the other one got away. When I woke up today guess who i found dead floating at the bottom of the bucket : )
These work like a charm! I made four of these and placed them outside near my other vehicles. Mice DESTROY engine compartments and interiors fast. I got tired of spending time and money on repairs.
I built mine with a hole in the side and a small ramp up to the rod and canister of death.
This 'idea' has been around since the old days; sure wish more people would use it to control the dang population.

I see the mouse is sort of floating.. drop some dishwashing liquid in the bucket and the mice will drown much faster since they no longer float. For super fast death in the bucket use car radiator coolant, it does wonders but I wouldn't pour that stuff out on my lawn afterwards, needs proper disposal.
I dont see why you have to make it suffer before dying. Why not have it so no water is in the bottom, and instead you just take it in the morning and through them far away from your house?
Seriously, conventional mouse-traps might be grisly, but at least they kill the buggers faster.
Copied this trap design yesterday, checked the trap this morning 5 mice caught and drowned, we live in the bush so tend to get more mice than most ppl but this design has worked better than any other trap i've seen. The person put the correct amount of water in there so the mouse cant jump out of the bucket but it can sit in there with its head above the surface of the water.

I see the mouse is sort of floating.. drop some dishwashing liquid in the bucket and the mice will drown much faster since they no longer float. For super fast death in the bucket use car radiator coolant, it does wonders but I wouldn't pour that stuff out on my lawn afterwards, needs proper disposal.

I dont see why you have to make it suffer before dying. Why not have it so no water is in the bottom, and instead you just take it in the morning and through them far away from your house?
Seriously, conventional mouse-traps might be grisly, but at least they kill the buggers faster.

Copied this trap design yesterday, checked the trap this morning 5 mice caught and drowned, we live in the bush so tend to get more mice than most ppl but this design has worked better than any other trap i've seen. Simple but VERY effective and easy to make, why would anyone ever buy a mouse trap again when you can make one of these up in minutes and its so effective...

@MrDittoDitto you obviously have no experience about mice. Drop them off anywhere and they'll be back in 24h. Only way to get rid of them is to kill them. Yes they DO damage. Chew on everything plastic, wood, cloth, paper. Want to get your house burned down in an electrical fire by mice chewing your cables? Drop the innocent animals outside ...!

The person put the correct amount of water in there so the mouse cant jump out of the bucket but it can sit in there with its head above the surface of the water.

thank you for tip! it worked! it killed two mice that fell in that trap.. because there alot of mice in our house! eek! so i saw your video and i make same what you made and it got two mice that fell for it! .. good!.. the rat poison not working very well either the mouse trap too.. cause they are very celever mouses! thank to you! yayayay!

It doesn't look like there's enough water in the bucket to kill the mouse. Mice are able to jump high, so the water will disable them from jumping...
