  • NjeriRose you are very right. All these land owners acquired land 'genuinly' during the Moi era.

  • EVEN AS THE GOVERNMENT BRING THESE BUILDINGS DOWN, WHETHER LEGALLY OR ILLIGALLY THEY MUST SAFE GUARD THE LIVES OF THOSE IN THEM. THEY NEED A LOUND SPEAKER ATLEAST TO TELL PEOPLE THAT THE Y HAVE X AMOUNT OF TIME TO MOVE. SET A TIME A DATE AND MAKE SURE THE RESIDENTS KNOWS. DON'T FIGHT YOUR PEOPLE THEY WILL RESENT THE GOVERNMENT,

  • The government is right now, but made mistakes in Moi's time. I remember in 1990's anybody connected and 'good' in the system was just fencing any free space for free, puts up storreys and collects money. They didn't care about the laws like 30m perimeter around lakes, parks, airports etc. Now that the New Kibaki-Raila government is working, we blame the government. The worst is that our land grabbers took advantage to exploit poor people. Let these buildings go so that Nairobi can be clean.

  • how can the government be so insensitive to people's needs?,,,,,,you just explain this attitude of a government that only seeks to clear areas for road expansion and in the process expanding the human population without housing

  • surely there are better ways of getting people out of illegal places.. I am seeing a govt running very scared of terrorists.... Al shabab militias must be laughing so hard wherever they are...., they haven't dropped a bomb , but buildings are coming down already

  • very soon u... see other building in same place

  • making a place for the new "Nuke Power" plants

Nuclear power is the use of sustained nuclear fission, go for it

  • THATS NOT RIGHT

  • This is exactly why I will never ever go back to Kenya, not even to visit. These people's lives have been risked, for what? Pieces of land? I'll never go back!

  • AFRICANS OMG-----WE WERE BETTER OFF WITH BABA WA TAIFA

  • We want Moi back "kanu juu" this is really bullshit kenya gov doing this to citizen of kenyans. Guys you remember what moi said we will remember him...... people use to complain kitu kidogo now see whats going on house are demolition...

  • IT IS, the governements job to ensure that the people in a condemned building are given adequate AND timely notice! of a demolition. Those people can actually go to court to sue , no ONLY the landlords but the kenya govt itself!!!.

I am so glad my cousins are lawyers, because Kenyan rights have been trampled on for far too long.we need to see more legal action including class action lawsuits.Let us come together and show this govenment who elected who!!

  • kenyans like things done like this, bulldoze them, if you simply talk they think it will pass or someone will be bought

  • we are always complaining about how unfair the GOVermnt is, even MPs who should know better.. the days for kitu kidogo to get approvals are gone. i feel nothing for those who keep breaking the law and think money can buy everything

  • 30 Meters from an Air Force Base??? HELL NO! That has to go!

  • @drsugarcane In the U.S, they having shopping strips right next to a major afb (airforce base). I park my car right next to the fence sometimes, and watch the f16s take off.

  • This should be termed as crimes against humanity, only in war does one come and destroy another's property and doesn't give them a chance for surrender. How do you start bringing down a house without letting them get out.

  • this is a problem created by city politicians dating back to Moi era when all open spaces were game to predatory land creeps....agree it is wrong to chase citizens out like mad dogs...those behind this illegalities must be made accountable to these tenants property damages!

  • It is illegal but c'mon GK be humane you could easily have killed several people.I support these operations but GK wacha unyama.

  • Haki this is shiety Govt. I have said it before KENYA IS A FAILED STATE, PERIOD!. Its citizens are living in fear of attack from Alshabab, Mungiki, robbers, stone throwers, car jackers, famine, diseases, fire, road accidents to the govt itself. Its now becoming a classical example of the rat, the trap, the cock... ... and the farmer! Please for the sake of humanity, just give people NOTICE!, a day or two will help.

  • Let me see;

    1. Greedy landlord builds an illegal apartment on public land. Check

    2. Gets notice to vacate the building and notify his tenants, but somehow ignores it because he wants to collect rent till the last minute. Check.

    3. Citizens blame the govt for homeless tenants. Check.

These people are not necessarily homeless. They can move back to shags. Who said everybody has to live in the city?

  • @magellanmax :yu put matters in perspective...these absent landlords are well connected mafiosi of the city godfathers....some of these houses belong to councillors, senior civil servants retired chiefs and drug dealers....

    Source: Personal Xxperience!

  • @magellanmax - Really? Move back to "Shags"? And commute to their jobs in the city by helicopter? Come on. These buildings did not spring up overnight. Someone was allocated the lands, permits were awarded and even rates were paid to the city commission. This is nonsensical and does not prevent Moi Airbase from being fired upon - you can ask the geniuses at the Pentagon when a plane flew into them out of the beautiful blue skies.

  • @surambaya well said!

  • @surambaya For starters, there's an article on the daily Nation website that quotes some of the residents who acknowledged the fact that they had been given notice long before the demolition. They chose to stay because they didn't believe the government would go through with the demolition. The 'shags' comment was obviously harsh, but they could have saved their rent money and moved elsewhere. P.S A plane being hijacked and flown into a building is not the same as one shot from a ground weapon.

  • @magellanmax - You are right - my comment was off-hand mainly because I did not fully understand the context of what you were saying. It seems to me that the tenants took the got warning rather too casually and paid the ultimate price for it. From a military perspective, as long as the target is not in motion, it's a sitting duck and even a child could finagle a lucky shot. As with 9/11, the govt does not have a clue about the vulnerabilities at range and they will be surprised.

  • @magellanmax I hope you realize that these are people with jobs in the city and just happened to rent a house like any other citizen.Could you pls give me a list of grabbed land in Kenya?NO.That doesn't make you any better, this could very much happen to you as well so don't support oppression of the poor.It is the govt.s job and not their own to make sure land is legitimate. They did their part as citizens by paying the rent, period!GOK just failed them once again.

  • @mcmagicx I never said I was better than them, that's your assumption. Those residents knew of the impending demolition but chose to stay. There's a block next to the demolished ones that houses police officers earmarked for demolition. Is that oppression too? Consolidate all land allocation to one ministry and most problems will solved. Kenya's govt is seriously corrupt. I would be happy if they started jailing them all. But lets be real, you think justice is served equally across the board?

  • next in line - Kibera

  • It just shows that the new constitution is merely a bunch of papers. When do we know what's legal and what's not?

  • @bwanakeino kenyans they dont beleive it until its done, corruption must go, i love the new constitution.

  • Another example of flawed housing policies around the capital. Why is safety an issue now, wasn't it important 20 years ago?

  • I really feel for these people and with rains pounding Nai right now,i guess they govt is expecting to host them in various hospitals very soon due to cold related diseases.I have always known since i was 6yrs old that you could not build beyond 4th floor. If you thought that the corrupt KANU govt will rule forever, you have no one else to blame but our own ignorance and greed.

  • BLAME YOUR LANDLORD PLEASE,,WE NEED BETTER POLICIES OF HADLING PEOPLE LIVING EVERYWHERE,,KWENDENI MASHAMBANI NYINYI.

  • @thealchemistish So if you rent a house,do you ask wether the land was grabbed or not? What does blaming a rich landlord bring to a poor Kenyan? This is KENYA get it?

  • kenyans rise up!dont take anymore of this .

  • It was necessary But THERE WERE A BETTER WAYSOF DOING IT!!without inflicting pain on your own people,

  • i just LOVE the kenyan goverment and how it treats it's wanaichi

  • Here is how the process is supposed to work:-

1.Government gives advanced notice to landlord that the premise is to be vacated and the buildings condemned.

2.The government follows this up a couple of weeks later with "condemed" notices on the buildings walls and a date for final evacuation.

    3. one week before demolitions, any person is forcefully evicted by police or allowed to leave on their own accord.

4.On D- day the building comes down and nobody gets hurt , and no property is lost

  • @walexia Very simple logic and still FAIL! We can't even run a jungle leave alone a country.

  • i just believe this, seriously??? can't the government find a solution instead of being so inhuman? like pay the owner and the gvmt rent it out to the airforce officials??? i hate this system in Kenya.. s sad

  • I had some landlord claim he was never given a notice!!! notice for having enjoyed public land? I sympathise with the innocent tenants who get entangled in the whole scam but those bloody landlords ought to compensate if they built on public land and a good question.... why would Kenya Power an arm of the government (parastatal if still it is) install power on an illegal plot? can this be answered?

  • The same PA ordered this Demolitions? My God what has my country turned into??? FUCK Kenya iuzwe kila mtu apewe share yake!!

  • @MrSimkariuki I've been saying it for a while now.Even the colonialists would not go this far,we need an uprising.

  • this will not end well for Kenyans, displaced people living nowhere heading into December with the economy as it is?

  • Now these people...wakiuwa watu watasema nini?

  • @omera26: Imagine! Kenya is a savage country! Wanaweza anje kiyanya wanainchi namna hii?! GK ni ya taka taka tupu! Kwani what was the point of the new constitution? Wha is that BS about 'Protecting the rights of every citizen?' Hi ni mavi ya kuku! Kichwa maji!

  • @NusuKappeti I can understand the need for demolishing these structures but hata bila offering alternatives? where does GoK expect the people to go...hata now you can just imagine hao watu wao wapi saa hii na vile it's raining in Nai. Halafu wanabomoa bila kupatia watu warning, what if nyumba iangukie watu?
