I downloaded this to try it out, and it is interesting in that it does a very good job of detecting the proper key. I guess people could use this as a sketchbook type of thing, because there's no way in hell you could ever make an actual demo with it. The song "styles" are from PG Music, which makes the equally cheesy Band in a Box software. It turns any song, even a song that is supposed to be heavy metal, into awful 1940s polka.

I have a mac and garageband (and songsmith did a giant piss poor job in trying to imitate garageband), but garageband not only has more choices and there is more creativity, but it doesnt sound like they took the cound files directly from a casio keyboard from 1985. At least Apple has pride. I just cant imagine Ballmer seeing these commercials and saying: YES! That is marketing genius! Quick, get that out and circulating as fast as possible! I want people to know that that was my company!

Garageband can do everything Songsmith can and More. Except in garageband you can pick the background music yourself which i think is better.

Note that you can choose the style yourself in Songsmith, that's up to you: what Songsmith does is pick the chords that match your melody. Garageband is an awesome program and does many things but does not do that.
