@rDarkWarrior: tails are docked b/c it will get in the way of their walking? I hope no one takes that seriously as it is a ridiculous statement. Cropping and docking was done so that during protection an intruder wouldn't have anything to hold on to; to stop the attack. Today, it's mainly done for cosmetic reasons. AND "Champion Bloodlines" can mean one champion many generations ago so buyer beware.. This statement should only be used when champions are in each generation.Bad breeders say this!
@PMG705 I disagree on the tail part, I have 3 dobies, very well taken care of, one of them still had his tail at 2 years when I adopted him and his tail was always being injured when it hit walls, corners, eventually it had to be surgically removed. Even vets, who are well trained, admit that there are breeds like Dobies that should have tails docked.
@ERYKTHEBASTARD Yes but an untrained dog will not release on command and will eventually kill the attacker, the pound will then kill your dog.
If you want yours to protect you without getting itself killed after-wards, get it trained :P. You don't want it killing anyone, even if they deserve it,.
I looked for 10 years and finally found a beautiful female Dobe. The mother only had 2 pups and one was blue. I'm pretty sure it was meant to be - and the amazing part is that the price tag was only $300.
A playmate will keep him in your yard, but male Dobes do not usually accept other males unless they are puppies or submissive. He is built like a Dobe should be, good looking dog. I have a 5 year old built like him. They defend naturally or there is an issue.
You're right, but notice that dominant dogs might LIKE other strong-willed canines if raised and socialized without fear/agression. With the proper dominance/obedience techniques they will apply other studs as another buddies to play. I have a dominant St Bernard/Tatra shep that prefers tough and dominant MALES, especially german shprds. The only breed he doesn't like are huskies [hates h. running - prey drive]. Once, he allowed gsd aggr. stranger to slightly pinsch his neck till his ownr came.
This is an excellent specimen of a Doberman. This is the way a male Dobe is supposed to be built--athletic lean and powerful. My 5 year old Dobe Geronimo looks just like this, and he comes from champ Shutzhund line in Europe. If he get a 2nd dog Dobes dont jump as much
Hi, I dont know anything about dogs, can someone tell me why all the Doberman's seem to be missing their tails, is it disease related or something like that.
I asked my breeder when i got my pup; he told me that the tail is a continuation of the spinal cord and has to be cliped in order to prevent injuries.
No disease, they usually have their tails docked a few days after they are born. This breed has a very long tail and wagging that tail causes a lot of stress on the base of their spine.
@pauldavidson2006 The Doberman's natural tail is long and thin, like a hound. His ears will fall floppy and hound-like as well if they aren't altered. The procedure to remove the tail at the 2nd vertebrae is called "docking" and happens at 2 days old. Back in the day it was done to prevent breaks while on duty, today it's become part of the "traditional" Doberman look. Doberman lovers will always bicker over whether or not ear cropping and tail docking is humane.
I'm thinking about getting a Doberman. With level 1 protection training. It's my understanding that the dog will only protect if given a command to do so. I want a dog that will protect my home when I'm not there. Do I need to get my Dobie trained to do that or will she do it naturally ?
You dont need to get it trained for just home protection its instinct. If you want a good one get a champion bloodline one but any will do they just need to be socialised well.
@fukinblowme I've had 7 dobermans over the years and none of them let people in without permission. You should really do your research, because these dogs are not for everybody.
NOW THAT is a PERFECT Doby.....I hope mine grows to look like that!

@corvette7444 That is one of the best Dobermans I have ever seen.
Its muscles have a lot of definition. You must exercise it a lot, along with giving it a healthy diet.
I would definitely buy a pup from your dog.
