There was one evening a week when I'd play my Kingston Trio albums in my room and learn the lyrics as I sang along with them. Later, when crossing the Pacific on my ship, some of my mates and I would get together and have our own sign-along with many of their songs. In 1968 I finally got to see them perform in San Diego. It was delightful since they were going to retire shortly after that. It was so hard not to sing out loud with them.
In 1966 we had a group of singers called the Singing Generals and we were taught this song by Miss King..long since gone. She must have had a great time weaving all those young voices in to something worth listening too. I know I did.
@Greenhornet270 I too remember listening to this song while flying along in the UH-1 and requesting to "turn up NAV" when radio traffic was low!! I did hear some other words to this song too. !! ;-))
@Greenhornet270~~ I too remember listening to this song while flying along in the UH-1 and requesting to "turn up NAV" when radio traffic was low!! I did hear some other words to this song too. !! ;-))
This is very beautiful song! But who is the actual singer of this version? I tried to find the song by KT, but only found another version. I mean if I want to purchase a CD with this particular version then what album I should look for?
i dont know, according with Continental Airlines, the distance between Newark NJ an Lima- Peru is the aproximate 35 thousend miles, i dont know if you are in dissagree with the distance that airline company affirm, i invite to call them and talk about your issue.
That is probably one reason I don't ever fly Continental Airlines....If that is the mileage they gave you. The distance between Kennedy Airport in New York, which is just down the road from New Jersey, to Lima, Peru, Jorge Chavez Airport is 3,629 miles or 5,840 km. I don't believe Newark is 35 thousand miles from anywhere, except perhaps outerspace. Thanks for the comment. C.
The song reminds me about the beautiful time of my student time . Missing my friends , my teachers and my beautiful time . Anh B . K 19 . Cao dang su pham Hai Phong.
well i dont know, but im living 35 thousend miles away from home, i have been living here for more than15 years but still miss my country my city and my warm people, some day i will come back to you Lima, Peru.
Umm... not to diminish the sentiment, but this planet is not even 25,000 miles in circumference, 35,000 miles is not really possible. That being said, I'm 2000 miles from home, and it pretty much sucks.
thank you ceb for posting this song, its so beautiful. the harmony and everything. im 300 miles from home and this song just about brings tears to my eyes.
Geez, Monsieur Fanchbrezoneg is a tough one, non? Actually, The Kingston Trio with Dave intact did perform this song when I attended one of their concerts at Duke University...so, let's include him in, en passant. Judiciously, John
This Kingston Trio offering certainly deserves more than a few comments, Claudia. Beautifully done, it differs slightly fom The Journeymen's classic, but more than stands on its own. Your love for classical music is in beautiful contrast to my favorite genre. (I grew up in Coronado with Nicky Reynolds and our families were very close.) Would love to have your comment on our just-uploaded rehearsal version of "500 Miles". My video's end comment was to relieve the sadness of this ballad. John
Goodness, I hope that is the biggest mistake I ever make in my life. Apologies, but the pictured trio did perform this song; perhaps not this recording. Blame the photograph.
Hi ceb2633 this photo is on the original jacket of the # 4 LP of the Dave Guard's Trio AT LARGE capitol T/ST1199released June 1,1959.
on August 19c 1961 Dave formally resigned his shares of "Kingston Trio,Inc " for a monetary settlement.
John Stewart had resigned from the Cumberland Three on June 13, and he was paid $ 500 per week as a salaried employee of Kingston Trio; Inc. (Reynolds,/shane/Werber) for the duration of his membership in the group ...

On the video it's a part of the cover of the LP AT LARGE with Dave Guard, he never has recorded this song with the Trio. Great anachronism.

So sorry to have used the wrong album cover, fanchbrezoneg. Glad it is only an anachronism and not a crime. Mea Culpa! C.

@ceb2633 i believe he means 35 hundred miles, who knows what's lost in translation.
jprougeux 2 years ago
@ceb2633
Indeed. Considering the Earth is but 25,000 miles in diameter, it would be impossible to be 35,000 miles from anywhere on the planet.
willzimjohn 1 year ago
@willzimjohn
For the sake of nitpicking, you should be using the radius, not the diameter.
=)

@ForSecrets2 Actually, I think I should have been using the circumference!

Anacronism.
On the picture it's the Trio of Dave Guard who never sings this song, but John Stewart, Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds yes.
It's a big mistake.
