You are a consumate professional when it comes to being the "giggly, loves-bad-conversations, harmless foreigner/English teacher". @gmsquared When people from different cultures speak to each other and had difficulty communicating, one of the best and universal ways of doing so is to smile. But that doesn't answer your question. They may just be very happy people. Or, just the people that he associates with. Or, he can evoke happiness in them simply because he is from America.
Are you still there? It's like making the most with the least. My friend did something similar and ended up coming home because that sort of lifestyle wore on him. I think it's just something some people have trouble getting use to. Thanks for the vid. You're adorable. =D
At first I saw that the video was 37 minutes long and I thought "No way am I watching that whole thing! I'll just watch five minutes." And before I knew it the video was over. Very interesting and fun to watch. Thanks for posting!
funny, he's listening to 'say captain, say what' from Captain Sensible'; a hit from England from the mid 80's. I think he was a Radio DJ in England. Like Rick Dees and Disco Duck.
@sain3572 haha thats a laugh, i lived in Japan for 16 years, and they are just as mean, racist and greedy as anyone here in the West. interesting. I'm contemplating jet but I'm just really unsure. I'm torn by the stupid little kid in me shouting 'Japan is sooo coooool' (you've seen these guys on youtube...) and the realistic person in me saying its a silly idea that involves putting myself out a lot
can someone tell me why in around 13:23 when the women started introducing themselves, they always began the sentence with "Merry Christmas"?? was it Christmas time by then or are they saying something in japanese?? im confused :S
Japan is VERY different from western cultures. I get angry when all my anime obsessed friends say they want to live in Japan. I try to explain to them that Japanese life isn't like in the animes. You will run into many hardships (like any other country) but the society is SOOOOOOOOOO different and it's very hard to adapt when you grew up in another country.
Visiting Japan is nice, but I would never actually live there! I give credit to those who can manage to stay there more than 6 months.
I agree. There is alot of pressure put on students for studying there. However, I do want to live there. Only because I think it is such a beautiful country ^^
This video inspired me to move back to Japan, and so I did I moved back to Okinawa Japan with my wife and 3 kids. Hope is all well with you and thanks for a great Video.
@robertc190 : Thanks for the comment! I am glad to hear that you are back here enjoying Japan... I wish I lived in Okinawa too! That's quite the paradise!
It cool and all, but looking for work here is hard to do nothing is posted online or in the job magazines here. When I was here before, I worked several jobs to make ends meet. Right now I am working a few hours a week. Trying to be an ALT in April.
i love japan and i also love music technology/production so the ideal would be to study or have that as an occupation while in japan but i only see foreigners there for engineering, business, as english teachers, or in the military...
i would go not as an anime-obsessed teenager, but rather a car-nut. Japans automotive aftermarket = heaven. Though i can't disagree about taking life seriously and having responsibilities (japan apparently has a high suicide rate), im pretty sure i'll sink some bowls and hit the Wangan when im there :P
To people who actually wanna do the JET program, don't do it because you're an anime obsessed teenager. You'll find yourself hating the country, because it's not that different from other places in the world. It's not some magical place where your troubles go away. You still have responsibilities, don't expect to slack off.
You know what, if someone really want's to move to japan, and knows what to expect, they should. It is better to visit there first, to make sure you actually like it there, but hey, if you have a dream, go for it. Don't let people like danialglover bring you down.
I'm not trying to bring people down, at all. Japan is a great place, and by all means should be visited. But if you're planning on LIVING there, you need to do research. Don't try to make me the bad guy, just because I'm telling more to the story, then just this video, which is already a good idea on what to expect, for ALTs and JETs.
@ danialglover, not all people who move to japan will hate it, and there's no reason to be so negative. Sure, if anime is there reson for wanting to go there, then they shouldn't go, life isen't an anime or a fairytale, but if they are serious about it, and work hard, why not?
Noone said all people would hate it. I'm saying, that if you're going to Japan, only on what you've seen in movies, cartoons, etc
You mis-understood what I said completely. I know exactly that there are some people who are serious about it. Matt is a perfect example.
But the point still stands, that a lot of people get to japan, only to hate the stuff that they didn't expect. And they leave afterwords without giving it a chance at all.
I can be negative on it, because people need to know.
Anyone over 18 should know that no place is "magical" without your mothering. And you basicly Told anyone that want's to join JET not to. That's what your comment said. And that that they are anime obsessed. So i'm guessing everyone who want's to join likes anime right? Wrong. It's you grouping people that makes me angery.
"don't do it because you're an anime obsessed teenager." I didn't tell them NOT TO, I said don't do it only for the anime. I know some people who did perfectly fine, after they understood what they are in for, and I mean EVERYTHING. People come back complaining about the little things, like cheese costing so much, or the language barrier.
Seriously, you're looking way to much into this it's hilarious. And the misunderstanding is just ridiculous.
Not to mention, the interview to get into the ALT program is fierce, and mentioning you're going because you like anime, will most likely drop your points with the program. Japan has food, Japan has scenery, Japan has a language that depends soley on the written pictorial characters that's needed to even read a newspaper. It's a challenge to live in Japan, like any other country.
Yes I agree. It's difficult to get into a country you weren't born in. And even if you get in, it's hard to live in a different country, and speak a differen't language. But, It can be done, with hard work. Not that there's anything wrong with liking anime, but that shouldn't be your reason for going. But honestly I've only heard of 5 year olds saying they want to go because of anime, but, I could be wrong.
Now we agree. Japan is a great country, a superb country. But it's a foreign country. This isn't a day we're talking about, or a week, or a month. This is a full year teaching in Japan. There have been people who quit, just because they miss their family, or because they don't have anyone to talk to other than students. It's indeed a lot of hard work to both get in, and survive. But when all the work has paid off, it's a great experience, and should always be, ignoring the little things.
I would be. When I was about 5 I told my sister I wanted to move to japan because they have anime on tv, but I couldn't imagine any young adult saying that, I suppose it's possible tho.
Yes I see what you mean now. Your wording was confusing me. I still think your comment was a bit negative, but the way I read it, you sounded like a complete jerk.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Fucking stupid american anime lover manga anime characters look like european people and they have european culture not asian.
You`re a stupid shit and he`s right and
I know a lot of people who love Japan because of what they se on TV.
and you said that It's difficult to get into a country you weren't born in but you`re wrong It's not difficult for an american yank to adapt in countries like England, Poland, Germany
Im living in Japan for this whole year :D..

I agree with u, also its a very expensive Country to stay in, and life is a lot tougher than it seems. Japanese usually work long hours.
mickey20009 2 years ago
@LilaPumpa
I agree. There is alot of pressure put on students for studying there. However, I do want to live there. Only because I think it is such a beautiful country ^^

ExpiredxMilk 2 years ago 2
i would go not as an anime-obsessed teenager, but rather a car-nut. Japans automotive aftermarket = heaven. Though i can't disagree about taking life seriously and having responsibilities (japan apparently has a high suicide rate), im pretty sure i'll sink some bowls and hit the Wangan when im there :P
LoCo55 2 years ago
To people who actually wanna do the JET program, don't do it because you're an anime obsessed teenager. You'll find yourself hating the country, because it's not that different from other places in the world. It's not some magical place where your troubles go away. You still have responsibilities, don't expect to slack off.
danialglover 2 years ago 4
You know what, if someone really want's to move to japan, and knows what to expect, they should. It is better to visit there first, to make sure you actually like it there, but hey, if you have a dream, go for it. Don't let people like danialglover bring you down.
RisaLovelyComplex 2 years ago
I'm not trying to bring people down, at all. Japan is a great place, and by all means should be visited. But if you're planning on LIVING there, you need to do research. Don't try to make me the bad guy, just because I'm telling more to the story, then just this video, which is already a good idea on what to expect, for ALTs and JETs.
danialglover 2 years ago
@ danialglover, not all people who move to japan will hate it, and there's no reason to be so negative. Sure, if anime is there reson for wanting to go there, then they shouldn't go, life isen't an anime or a fairytale, but if they are serious about it, and work hard, why not?
RisaLovelyComplex 2 years ago
Noone said all people would hate it. I'm saying, that if you're going to Japan, only on what you've seen in movies, cartoons, etc
You mis-understood what I said completely. I know exactly that there are some people who are serious about it. Matt is a perfect example.
But the point still stands, that a lot of people get to japan, only to hate the stuff that they didn't expect. And they leave afterwords without giving it a chance at all.
I can be negative on it, because people need to know.
danialglover 2 years ago
Anyone over 18 should know that no place is "magical" without your mothering. And you basicly Told anyone that want's to join JET not to. That's what your comment said. And that that they are anime obsessed. So i'm guessing everyone who want's to join likes anime right? Wrong. It's you grouping people that makes me angery.
RisaLovelyComplex 2 years ago
"don't do it because you're an anime obsessed teenager." I didn't tell them NOT TO, I said don't do it only for the anime. I know some people who did perfectly fine, after they understood what they are in for, and I mean EVERYTHING. People come back complaining about the little things, like cheese costing so much, or the language barrier.
Seriously, you're looking way to much into this it's hilarious. And the misunderstanding is just ridiculous.
danialglover 2 years ago
I'm not saying that every JET student is an anime nerd either, I'm saying don't go into the jet program, because you are.
I'm not saying Japan is a terrible country either, on the contrary, Japan is a great place, once you get past all the little things.
danialglover 2 years ago
And you'd be surprised, at how many people, base their opinions on the country, just because their enjoy their cartoons.
danialglover 2 years ago
Not to mention, the interview to get into the ALT program is fierce, and mentioning you're going because you like anime, will most likely drop your points with the program. Japan has food, Japan has scenery, Japan has a language that depends soley on the written pictorial characters that's needed to even read a newspaper. It's a challenge to live in Japan, like any other country.
danialglover 2 years ago
Yes I agree. It's difficult to get into a country you weren't born in. And even if you get in, it's hard to live in a different country, and speak a differen't language. But, It can be done, with hard work. Not that there's anything wrong with liking anime, but that shouldn't be your reason for going. But honestly I've only heard of 5 year olds saying they want to go because of anime, but, I could be wrong.
RisaLovelyComplex 2 years ago 7
Now we agree. Japan is a great country, a superb country. But it's a foreign country. This isn't a day we're talking about, or a week, or a month. This is a full year teaching in Japan. There have been people who quit, just because they miss their family, or because they don't have anyone to talk to other than students. It's indeed a lot of hard work to both get in, and survive. But when all the work has paid off, it's a great experience, and should always be, ignoring the little things.
danialglover 2 years ago
I'm 100% with you there.
RisaLovelyComplex 2 years ago
@danialglover I agree with you 100%. I knew people before I moved here though. Helps a lot.
aeon23 2 years ago
I would be. When I was about 5 I told my sister I wanted to move to japan because they have anime on tv, but I couldn't imagine any young adult saying that, I suppose it's possible tho.
RisaLovelyComplex 2 years ago
Yes I see what you mean now. Your wording was confusing me. I still think your comment was a bit negative, but the way I read it, you sounded like a complete jerk.
